Persis Drell to step down as provost. -

Quote:Drell, who became provost in February 2017, will step down in the fall quarter, as soon as a successor appointed by President Marc Tessier-Lavigne can be in place. Drell, a physicist, will continue to be a member of the Stanford faculty, and she plans to remain active in teaching this fall.

Thank God for small favors, although I doubt her replacement will be materially better

Interesting. I believe the Athletic Director reports to the Provost, right?

That's correct, Terry - hope springs eternal....

will be interesting to see who replaces her...
looking at previous provosts her time in the position is in the range of most of her predecessors (3-10 years) who did not move from provost to president (the notable exception being John Etchemendy who was provost for 17 years)

I strongly suspect there are many, many more than two "bad admin hires" that should go, but we here just don't know about those people because they are not "obvious". Their effects are though :-).

FWIW?
I would think that a provost change might be a time to re-evaluate the president's office generally. You usually want the president to be able to appoint his/her own provost.

On the one hand, if the BOT was going to jettison MTL they may want some continuity at provost while they get a new president, so you could read this as a negative tea leaf regarding his likelihood of being fired.
OTOH, if Drell heard or thought MTL was getting the boot and she'd be soon next, maybe she wants to get ahead of it.
How quickly a new provost is hired and whether they are interim or permanent may shed some more light perhaps.

To paraphrase a South Park episode, this is a great day for Stanford and therefore the world.
Fingers crossed that the new Provost is more Etchemendy, less Drell when it comes to support for and interest in Athletics.

MTL is now dipping his arms in the pudding, as is tradition.

I will always be sad for Katie Meyer, who was treated by Drell's office as a disposable problem for her most human response to a grievous assault.

And, under Domino Theory, the ultimate outcome of all of that would be that Haase gets fired.
The dream is one step closer!

I think I'm gonna start a rumor that Bernard Muir has been promoted to Provost, and then scan the horizon for the towering inferno when the Cardboard server erupts into flame.

I am not sure it would. It would be regarded by many as a mixed blessing. He would no longer be the AD, and some would say that it would be impossible to find anyone worse. Others would say that finding someone worse was inevitable, as Muir would be doing the hiring. Others would say the whole thing was Shaw's fault. Just when you think you have the Cardboard figured out, somebody will come up with a new angle.

The problem is that Muir would then be responsible for hiring his replacement...this would not be a good thing
