Stanford Men’s Tennis - StanfordMatt - 05-06-2023

I know men’s tennis isn’t the most popular topic on this board and I don’t follow closely enough to do detailed write ups, but we’re currently in the second round of the NCAA tournament after beating St. John’s yesterday.

Columbia is hosting as the #13 national seed and we are the #2 seed in the regional (#21 overall). No live streaming of today’s match but we just took the doubles point. Yesterday’s match said it was played at Flushing so I’m guessing they’re playing at the US Open campus but not sure. If they’re playing outdoors that would be a significant benefit to us as I believe Columbia typically plays their home matches indoors.

Our ITA indoor national champion, Nihesh Basavareddy, did not play at PAC-12’s but played doubles yesterday and today. Fingers crossed he’s healthy enough to play singles today. His return would be a big boost to the lineup and our chances of pulling the upset.

Great post thanks. I’m following on line. Nihesh is playing. 3rd singles

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - StanfordMatt - 05-06-2023

Thanks Bob. Nihesh cruised to a 6-3 first set. Overall, we took 3 first sets so still on pace for a win but it’ll be tight. A couple missed opportunities as we dropped two of the first sets by 7-6 and 7-5 scores.

Fery and Basavareddy collect wins at #1 and #3, respectively. Up 3-0. Need one more!

This match should have been done a while ago with a Stanford 4-0 win. Apparently, the result on court 6 is being protested by Columbia

How do you protest the result? I know players/coaches sometimes question calls but I've never heard of protesting a result.

Truly bizarre. Moot point, however, as Banerjee comes back on #2 to win in 3 for the team win!

Apparently, Goldstein made a late change to his singles lineup and didn’t provide proper notice to officials and so we were defaulted at #6. All is well that ends well though. Kentucky up next as the #4 Wildcats came back to beat Northwestern.

Wow that is strange and on the dumb side. Thanks for the news.

Pretty chicken shit way to get a win though.

Just won the doubles point vs. #4 Kentucky in Lexington. Winner advances to the Elite 8 in Orlando.

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - PVTree - 05-13-2023

Watching the video feed. We split the first sets 3 each... But we're getting smoked in court 2 so it will be 1-1 shortly. We won on courts 1, 5, and 6. A repeat in the second sets, and we advance.

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - StanfordMatt - 05-13-2023

Split the six first sets 3-3. Banerjee in trouble at #2 already down a set and a break but all the other matches are very tight. I like Basavareddy’s chances at #3 to bounce back from his first set loss if necessary.

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - PVTree - 05-13-2023

-----------
It's now 1-1, and we're trailing in 4 of the other 5 second sets while the 5th is tied.

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - StanfordMatt - 05-13-2023

So much for Basavareddy coming back. We lost at #2, #3 and #4 and are now down 3-1. #1 Fery had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 in the second but was broken and is now trying to force at TB. Also need #5 and #6. Up a set and on serve at #5; #6 is on serve already in the 3rd.

Fery wins at #1 and Kolasinski wins at #5 but moments later Kentucky closes at #6 for 4-3 win. Heartbreaking end to a strong season.

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - PVTree - 05-13-2023

Argh! All second sets were won by the first set winners, except on court 6. Tucky was able to win two straight sets and our season is over. Lost 3-4.

RE: Stanford Men’s Tennis - StanfordMatt - 05-13-2023

Also worth noting that Max Basing didn’t play today. I believe he’s currently ranked #33 nationally and was ranked as high as #4 early in the season. I was going back through past results to see where he typically plays but it’s a little tricky because Basavareddy and Basing were rarely in the lineup at the same time. Injuries appear to have played a role this season.

The good news is that our top 4 are all underclassmen, however, I’d imagine going pro is a realistic option for Fery at this point.
