ESPN drops Pac-12. Where is Pac-12 Media Rights deal headed? -
ADPinWDC - 06-14-2023
ESPN is out, and negotiations are narrowing -- so the issue is back on the Board.
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2023/5/23/23733108/pac-12-tv-rights-deal-conference-expansion-usc-ucla-out
Fox not lining up. CBS is a no. ABC won't take a full slate of Pac-12 games. NBC?
Observers say by end of June on a deal... which then translates into which teams stay after exit of USC, UCLA (?)
Do we pick up two more teams? BYU is heading to Big-12, maybe Boise State also?
Is SDState interested? Coin flip: SJState vs Fresno State? [Cannibalizing Mountain West by default to stay out West.]
There are very few good looking partners left at the dance that attract TV or streaming.
Speculation about an Amazon streaming deal... looks dim.

Are networks dropping out of negotiations because PAC-12 is asking too much or because PAC-12 less USC/UCLA is not appealing enough? The article says the fear by networks during a long term deal is that more schools may drop out of the PAC. They could put some clause in the contract in the event that happens.
San Diego State just doesn't seem like a PAC-12 type of team to me. I'd rather stick with ten teams if possible than add teams currently being speculatively discussed.
I hope a cable TV deal gets done. IMO streaming only would be the beginning of the end.

Adding SJSU would be a total farce. This is a program that has had a couple of winning seasons in the last 30 years, which even in the best of times draws 12000-15000 fans to the stands, and which 2/3 of the dollars to support it are based on student taxes and smuggled general funds from the state.
San Diego state has better attendance, better self-support, and more winning seasons, but the university itself only aspires to be at the level of Pac-X universities. It is not an R-1, though it wishes it were.

A 3-week old opinion piece, and an SI "article?" No thanks.

You're right. From the name of this topic, I would have expected the person posting it had some news.
Feels like a click-bait thread.

ESPN is not out, just out as general distribution partner. Some tier one rights will still likely land with them unless NBC/Sports + Peacock takes the whole package, or a streamer is feeling more ambitious than we can realistically hope for in 2023, and ponies up for all Tier 1 rights.
Canzano's recent substack reports a deal is likely very soon and insiders think it'll meet or just surpass Big 12's per-school media-only payout. If so, that should stanch the bleeding (for now).
The long-term reality is that the Big Ten and 12 negotiated at just the right moment and the Pac should have gone last summer too. Media rights environment is literally the worst it's been since the great recession, and I suspect the SEC and Big Ten deals will be the high water mark for any per-school deals for the long foreseeable future. ESPN is in decline. Networks are in decline. Streaming is the future, but in the awkward pubescent phase where you stop growing tall but not wide.
If George K can right the ship in the short term, I'm hopeful things will even out for a while, but the long term future is a few super conferences for revenue sports and less depth across all of D1. In that super team environment, it's likely most of the remaining Pac-10 members will be on the outside looking in, including Stanford. Good news is we're a private and our funding structure is much more like an independent than nearly every other P5 school, so I think Stanford should be able to weather the conference realignment storm.

Was academic quality a criteria considered for joining the Pac-12 in the past?
This conference really is a shadow of itself with SC and UCLA leaving. Remember when Texas and Oklahoma might have joined?
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/859234-pac-12-expansion-money-hungry-texas-longhorns-saved-college-football
All because the Pac-12 wouldn't share its tv revenue. And now it's pointless.

There are a lot of things written 12 years ago that look silly now. The Pac will not enhance its situation by adding weak sisters that would dilute the payout. And fortunatelu, Texas was transparent about its greed at that time. Texas in the Pac would a candidate for bolting just the same as USC and UCLA.

The most worrisome development is that THERE ISN'T NEWS.
And, George K might try to put lipstick on ANY deal. Stanford winning Directors Cup again doesn't translate to Media Rights deals.
But, will AZ and CO jump to Big-12?

At this point I'm hoping the Big 10 forms a Western Wing with Stanford,Cal/USC,UCLA/UO,UW.
It's the only thing that looks remotely palatable of the options loosely discussed.

Sure, West Wing vs. East Wing. However, more likely the Rose Bowl will permanently be part of the CF playoffs once they expand to 8 or 12 teams.

Could the Rose Bowl be the annual Big 10+ Championship - East vs West?
And the Rose Bowl stadium could be in the Football Playoffs rotation

The CFP has already announced it will expand to 12 teams effective with the 2024 season and the Rose Bowl will be part of the CFP rotation.

The link says it all, and it comes from Canzano who has credibility, not like the formerly credible SI publishing stuff that is largely opinion and not real reporting these days.
It looks like SDSU (SoCal) and SMU (Dallas) are coming to the Pac whatever.
And even more credible reporter isn't going as far as SI did...

I suppose I will get use to SDSU and SMU being in the PAC-12. My first reaction is I don't like it. Although SMU is a pretty reputable academic institution. And of course SMU being in Dallas is a big TV market and a good location for recruiting in just about all sports. What little I know about SMU is despite its name the school is nonsectarian.
It seems like SDSU gets the offer because of TV revenue for sports and geographic location.

Being overrun by sectarian religious fervor is probably not a big risk for PAC ? SMU probably above midpoint academically of remaining PAC? Schools. I’ve not seen SDSU I for but they have to be more selective than ASU, Oregon.. or am I wrong about those institutions.

SDSU is test blind and admits 39%; 70.5% of admits had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
ASU is also test blind and admits 90%; 37.8% of admits had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Oregon is test optional and admits 86%;
54.5% of admits had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Interesting. Is there a list of these number for all the Pac schools or a source where we can look it up?
Cheers,
