2023 Fall Football Practice - Maple Leaf - 07-08-2023

Does anyone have any idea when fall football practice will start?

Any insight on how Troy Taylor runs fall practice?

I haven't seen confirmation of when fall camp starts but I believe we are allowed to start August 1 as that's 31 days before the season starts.

I am optimistic about Stanford football because I think Taylor is a good coach who has assembled a good staff and is attentive to the two most important things in college football, recruiting and culture. The fruits of Taylor's investments in recruiting and culture are going to take some time to show up on the field. I expect Stanford will be pretty bad this fall or at best very mediocre. It will really surprise me if we're a top 70 team nationally. I think we are looking at a 3-5 win season. But it's the first year of a rebuild and 3-5 wins can be a sign of the start to something much better. I'm looking to Taylor to build something like Jim Harbaugh, Matt Campbell, Dave Clawson, and PJ Fleck did. All of those guys won 3-5 games their first year in turning a program around.

While a 3-5 win season that doesn't crack the top 70 nationally is not a good season, I think there are things to look forward to this fall as well. Seeing a program with a pall lifted from it will be refreshing and energizing for us all. Games will have some anticipation and hope to them. Players will look like young upstarts eager to turn a program around rather than beaten down husks demoralized about being part of the generation that ruined Stanford football's legacy. The offense will be fast paced and dynamic. The defense will be something different than our passive, non-playmaking defense of recent years and, I hope, competent. The schedule starts insanely easy and may lend itself to a snowballing sense of optimism and returned swagger. During all of this, we will be able to keep one eye on a high school slate featuring a massive and pretty good class of incoming recruits. Those of us who obsess over Stanford football will get to know a whole new cast of characters on the coaching staff and even to an extent on the roster rather than the stale Groundhog Day much of the last five years of Shaw's tenure became.

So yeah, really looking forward to the fall!

Fingers crossed for a full roster or close to it coming out of fall camp. Numerous decimating injuries have been a feature of Stanford football the last few years. Let's see if a new regime results in any difference in the number of injuries.

I am also curious to see who Taylor brings with him to Media Day a week from Friday. Any predictions? EJ Smith and David Bailey? Joshua Karty?

Stanford certainly has had a lot of injuries in recent years but it wasn't always out of fall camp. Last year Shaw treated the whole team with kid gloves and bubble wrap and we were remarkably healthy heading into the season....and then football became a contact sport. Indeed, let's see if a new regime results in any difference in the number of injuries. Taylor has claimed that he inherited a similar situation at Sacramento State and Deatrick had a plan/vision that worked wonders in substantially addressing it. We'll see if that history can repeat itself. I think there's a combination of luck, conditioning, and willingness to play through injury that affects these issues. I think Stanford under Shaw became unusually cautious (some would say wimpy.....I don't want to disparage our players but this is all relative and I don't think Stanford the last several years was very hard nosed).

Great question on who Taylor brings. I'd imagine two among Karty, Yurosek, Smith, Bailey, Rogers, Humphreys, and Phillips. I wouldn't be totally shocked at Sinclair or Gilman. I'd pick two of Karty, Yurosek, and Bailey as those are probably the awards candidates and it would be good to get the PR campaigns going, but there are other considerations like eloquence/representational ability, balance (strong incentives, if not requirement, to pick one offense and one defense), and seniority (e.g., does it send a good or bad message about meritocracy to send a guy who hasn't started his sophomore year like Bailey). I also don't know whether it's fully the school's decision or an invitation from the conference or a dialogue. Yurosek and Bailey is my guess.

And in anticipation of fall practice, here's a classic, 15-year old story from the Bootleg, featuring the famous Harbaugh preseason conditioning drill. Over 3/4 mile of all-out wind sprints in varying forms. Do not attempt without consulting your physician!

Additionally I remember something about challenging players to not put hands on hips after drills and between plays.  "We are tougher than our opponent, period" mentality

Looks like Media Day participation will be based on seniority. Taylor is bringing Humphreys and Sinclair.

Humphreys won a Stanford "good guy" award (Billy Anderson Commitment to Community Outreach Award) and is academic all-conference honor roll (econ). Sinclair is also academic all-conference honor roll and listed as pursuing a master's degree in computer science, a very challenging academic path.

Other players are also seniors and undoubtedly higher on NFL draft boards, but both guys seem like good choices for this particular event.

Plus, both of their fathers played football and were starters.  Wonder if their father's respective playing days coincided with Troy Taylor's playing days at Cal?
