Colorado to the Big 12 -

Brett McMurphy on Twitter: "Colorado leaving Pac-12 to return to Big 12 in 2024, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. CU will receive full Big 12 share ($31.7M) from ESPN/Fox media deal. Buffs left because of Big 12 stability & Pac-12’s uncertainty, sources said. Announcement Thursday https://t.co/IOo8LWAuTF https://t.co/4Ilq91C0EO" / Twitter
This type of decision by a university is why conferences should/must move aggressively to add viable teams.
The Pac will survive this (I think), but its standing certainly is weakened.

Stanford, Cal, Oregon, and Washington need a Big Ten invite. USC and UCLA will want them to cut down on travel.
RE: Colorado to the Big 12 - Softball Fan - 07-26-2023
Geez, imo this marks the beginning of the end for the conference. How can the remaining PAC-12 schools assure recruits there will not be more departures from the conference?
It's looking like the protracted negotiations for a media deal has worked against the conference. Every school has to be feeling the uncertainty of it. ESPN no longer has the funding to do a mega-deal with the conference; maybe a year ago something could have been worked out with ESPN.
I don't know what the right course of action is for Stanford. They should at least be scouting around for possibilities in case the media negotiations become a disappointment to the point where all the conference members start looking for a way out. Hopefully everything holds together but I don't think it's likely unless there is a solid media solution.

Colorado’s departure for the Big 12 could start an exodus of more Pac-12 schools to the Big 12, sources said. The most likely candidates are Arizona, Arizona State and Utah.
Earlier this month at Big 12’s media days, Yormark [Big-12 commissioner] said the league has an expansion plan.

The Pac-12 was dead the moment USC left. Those trying to save it are hurting Stanford unless the idea is to buy time before mega conference expansion accommodates us.

If I said I was going to miss the Coach Prime, fifth down poseur, never won when I wanted them to, but didn't lose when I wanted them to, buffaloes are from India not Colorado you freaking idiots, ruined Boulder without even trying morons, I'd be lying. Ungrateful bastards.
And I grew up half an hour from that campus. A campus that drains to the ******* Atlantic Ocean by the way!
They can take the other four corner schools with them.
Join the Big 10 or keep the schools from states that abut the Pacific Ocean (six-Pac) and add SJSU, Fresno State, SDSU, and Hawaii. If a team starts up on Guam or Alaska, add them too.
P.S. Go Rams!!

Probably not a great time for Stanford to be without a President.
Can Muir orchestrate a move to the Big Ten without a real boss?
The issue isn’t Colorado bolting as much as Utah, Arizona and ASU following them, which absolutely could happen. A six team conference isn’t viable and Stanford isn’t a Mountain West school.

Does anyone really think Empty Suit Muir is capable of coming up with a good landing spot for Stanford. Unless it's dropped in his lap, I am a nonbeliever.

From what I understand from some with ties to the program, Arizona is gone if Colorado (or anybody else for that matter) leaves. They have acute FOMO already about the situation are were waiting for an excuse. This is it, if it happens.

Anybody affiliated with the Pac-12 who doesn’t have acute FOMO is clueless.

From an academic standpoint the ACC would be a good match for Stanford and Cal: Duke, Virginia, Syracuse, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Pitt, Virginia Tech. It's the geography for Olympic sports that's the killer.

Coach Prime heard he was predicted to finish second to last in the Pac-12 and promptly bailed for a better preseason ranking lol

This has probably been discussed elsewhere, but I wonder if now is the time that Stanford should seek to go independent, like Notre Dame. Schedule the games we want to play, which would likely include many that we currently play.
Of course, as soon as I say that, I remember that the only way that Notre Dame can afford to do that is because of their massive deal with NBC. Stanford is on TV only because of the Pac-12 network and the odd network/ESPN game that we play against someone noteworthy. We need the Pac 8/9/10/12, or some other conference, because of the TV revenue.

Paging George Kliavkoff... [AWOL] He showed up at Media Days last week with NUTTIN'.
https://www.si.com/college/2023/07/27/pac-12-past-promises-ring-hollow-colorado-potential-exit
Whaddya got?!
Play high stakes betting poker when you got a hand. We don't. Busted flush.
Colorado won't exit alone... At least ARIZ pulls the ripcord, unless something shows up. UTAH?
Pac-8 goes back before cable and internet...
High academic standards are nice... NOW, cut a media deal you Nerds.
As of today...
Maybe: TIMBER DIVISION: WASH, WAST, OREG, ORST
Maybe BAY AREA GROUP: STAN, CAL, FRST, HAWI
AND CHAPARRAL GROUP: SDSU, ARIZ, ARST, UTAH
1) Play within your group every year. (3 games)
2) Play three each from the other two groups; rotate. (6 games)
3) And three Non-Confs.
Top Two teams play Conf Champ game. Work out the tie-breakers.
Three teams at top with 8-1 Conf records... each lost to just one of the other two.
Highest ranking in BCS or AP?
Point differential in Conf? Or record against opponents ranked at time played?
I do not like W-L overall record because of brobdingnagian diffs in quality of Non-Conf schedule.

Agree, but for some FOMO has a better basis. Places like WSU and to some extent ORST have no obvious place to go, so the damage they do to themselves by inaction is limited. They also don't bring much to the table TV-wise. It may be there is nothing they can rationally do, so no reason to fear missing out. No matter what they do, they "miss out". Other places, like Oregon and Washington, have, or at least think they have, an attractive product to "sell", so they have less fear and more options. They are the "big dogs", so they can be a bit slower to act. Arizona OTOH has no such illusions about their product, but they do believe that they can land a place in the Big-12 if they move fast. Give a choice between Utah and Arizona, Utah wins. Arizona has the most reason in the conference to be proactive because they need to get there first. If they don't, they are in the same boat as WSU. At least that is how they view it.

The B1G and SEC hold all the cards. Those schools are very happy to stand pat. Oregon and Washington will prop up the PAC and deal with the instability until the B1G is in the mood to add teams because a.) defecting to the Big 12 doesn’t get them the prize and b.) they perceive that playing in a small conference will be an advantage when it comes to the expanded playoff.

And c) they have no other choice. One wonders what kind of a TV deal the PAC-? can get, if any. How long can Washington and Oregon run their programs without the TV revenue they are accustomed to? Why would the B1G dilute their TV deal? Going forward, it is probable that TV revenue will be harder to get, not easier. Why would the B1G want to get bigger unless they got paid to do so? Unclear how that would happen.
RE: Colorado to the Big 12 - Softball Fan - 07-26-2023
One approach Stanford might take for entry into the B1G is not insist on full media revenue the first couple of years. Maybe accept a 50% share for a few years. I'd wait until the PAC-12 deal is finalized and then crunch some numbers about what would make sense for Stanford sports in the long run. The problem right now is Stanford football is at a low point; not much appealing about the football product this year but that will improve.

WILD IDEA FOR THAT BASED ON OTHER QUAKES
A) Some are promoting an SEC poach of CLEM, MIAM, and FLST to make a SuperConf with best TV deal by far.
https://fanbuzz.com/uncategorized/3-rumored-acc-teams-to-join-the-sec/
B) ACC has an odd 15 schools today. That poach would take them down to 12.
C) WASH, OREG, STAN, CAL jump ship and join the ACC (Soon to be "Coastal Conf") as the Western Pod.
I honestly don't think the Student-Athletes would mind the travel (they're young), and the better brand arenas / schools.
Sure lots of travel; pay for it out of Endowment (just suck it up) initially, then the BIGGER, BETTER TV Deal refills the Endowment.
WAST and ORST are left to the Mountain West, which needs teams.
This assumes that COLO, UTAH, and ARIZ + AZST are outbound to Big12 to make that a 16 Team SuperConf.
USC and UCLA are in the B1G.

Now y'all know why I thought the Larry Scott criticism was over the top and misguided. There are and were significant structural weaknesses in the Pac that even pre-dated the arrival of Larry Scott.
And I think I can make a pretty sound argument Kliavkoff is no better, maybe worse than Larry Scott.
Te biggest criticism of Scott was keeping full ownership of the Pac-12 Network. He wouldn't partner with ESPN or Fox or anyone else, and wanted the conference to own 100% of the network. That ultimately meant limited carriage for the Pac-12 Network which hurt revenue. My question is did these companies even offer to air Pac-12 Network in exchange for equity? I know the assumption has been it was Larry's decision to decline such a deal, but was it really his decision?
Demographics and to a degree, Cal and Stanford not prioritizing football is what led to the current situation. I've said it before, and will say it again. Jim Delany or Roy Kramer could have been made the head of the Pac and I don't think the Pac would be in a materially much different place today than it is.
Anyone want to debate this?

I have watched Stanford many times in various sports on non Pac 12 networks.
No debate on the whole thing sucks
