Wilner reporting preliminary talks underway for Stanford, Cal, Washington, and Oregon to possibly join the Big10.
https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/08/02/report-stanford-cal-oregon-and-washington-under-consideration-for-membership-in-the-big-ten/
While I would miss the Pac12, this seems like the best possible outcome for Stanford. We remain relevant in D1 athletics and we have a built in western division of schools with reasonable travel. I feel for WSU and OSU who might be left off the dance card, but if this is an option we have to jump on it.
A few points:
1. Still preliminary, it is also reported they may consider going to 18 and just taking UW and Oregon which would be terrible for us.
2. New invitees are unlikely to recieve a full revenue split. This makes sense, the Big10 has the leverage and knows we'd accept less for a period of time. This was reported at 50% for unclear duration, which seems harsh, but this will be negotiable and depending on the duration is still a better option for Stanford Athletics.

Heck, an escalating % share would be more than anything any of the schools could get through the P9. Fingers crossed that the B10 takes four.

The Big Ten will scare Cal and Stanford into taking less to join and get them cheap because they know they have no other realistic option if the Pac doesn't have Washington and Oregon.
You think it is scary being Stanford now? Try Oregon State and Washington State.

Given the alternative (staying in a Mountain West-like shell of a conference), starting at x% and escalating towards a full share sounds good to me. All four schools have little leverage. Play the long game.

Who is leading the charge on our side given we have no President? This seems like a massive thing to be front and center of and we have no leader.

Perhaps the Big10 will take on the other two, expand to 20 teams, then carve out half to form the Big10 Pacific conference. We'll all be one happy family again and the Rose Bowl will be the conference champ game.

Let's see .... Stanford gets as little as 50% while the LA traitors get a full payout? And the remaining Pac 12 schools are left homeless with nothing. Western regional college sports are driven into a outpost ghetto of the Southern and Mid-Western schools. Do I have that right? We no longer need to talk about something as simple as an Eastern bias. We can begin talking about West Coast subjugation.
I suppose we'd be foolish not to jump on that opportunity but it tastes bitter. Very, very bitter.
Sometimes I wonder why my love for college sports wavers but moments like this mean I don't wonder for very long.

Stewart Mandel is skeptical.
Quote:A quick reminder: Kevin Warren is no longer the Big Ten commissioner. Warren was the one making all that noise about the Big Ten possibly conquering the world. In fact, he reportedly went looking for a potential fourth partner (presumably ESPN) to buy just such a late-night package that would help make the league whole if it added even more schools. He reportedly did not find a taker. Meanwhile, all along his members were never as itchy as him to keep adding more schools.
Any such talk has screeched to a halt since Tony Petitti took over, and with good reason: Warren left behind quite a mess. As Pete Thamel reported in May, the massive TV deal he landed was unfinished and full of issues, like the fact he sold a Big Ten championship game to NBC he didn’t have the authority to sell. (Technically, Fox-owned BTN owns and sells all of the Big Ten’s rights.) Also, the league is still far from nailing down all the scheduling logistics involved in integrating all of USC and UCLA's other sports.

It is interesting how fast some Stanford fans are willing to sell out.
How much does Stanford need another $5-$10M in TV money? In the big picture of things,
it seems like a small return for being a second class citizen in the Big 10.
There would likely be limitations on FB and BB games between the 4 latecomers and USC and UCLA
because much of the incremenental value of USC and UCLA is the games between them and the Midwest schools.

I've read a number of articles how many B1G schools are not happy the new media deals were negotiated without their input and how many issues remain unclear. So maybe they aren't in the mood to vote for expansion. Stanford has to at least try to talk with them.
Now is the time for Stanford to make an attempt to get ahead of the curve. I hate to say this as a proud alum. I don't have a problem with Stanford begging to get it's foot in the door and take any kind of deal initially to get into the Big 10 club. The football team is at a low. We have no bargaining leverage other than maybe academic reputation and Olympic sports. Once we are a B1G member then Stanford can slowly start climbing up the totem poll.
A few weeks ago I might have been more inclined to keep the PAC together. But this latest Apple TV proposal is the final straw for me. The conference media negotiations has been inept for a long time. I have no confidence of those in power to initiate or manage a PAC-X stand alone deal.

I made a post with this argument earlier, but if UW and Oregon bolt, we are really hosed, and the bad Apple deal that would put us 12 million behind Big 12 and 30 million behind Big 10 would look way worse.
So now I'm on board with the jump to Big 10 as the least worst outcome....if they'll have us.

Don't forget the value Cal, Stanford, and Washington would bring the Big Ten academic research consortium. That factors into the equation for the Big Ten.
In terms of overall value to the Big Ten, I'd rank as follows:
1. Washington - Best combo of Football strength and academic research, big market
2. Stanford - Best school in D1, credible Football, big market, great brand
3. Oregon - Big Football school and Nike
4. Cal - Nobel prizes, not atrocious Football, big market and alumni base

What is the alternative? The Pac12 is cooked. With more lucrative rights deals in the Big10 and Big12, schools will be gobbled up until only the undesirables remain. If we don't get into the Big10, we may be left trying to create a conference out of WSU, OSU, us, Cal, and mountain west schools. Or we get into a Big12 that shares no academic values and is a geographic nightmare. Or we join the mountain west.
The best possible outcome is that we end up as part of a Big10 west that semi-resembles the Pac8. We get the money of the Big10, occasional fun games against some Big10 heavyweights, keep our old rivalries, keep travel reasonable for most of our sports, etc. The Big10 championship game is essentially the new rose bowl, and can (hopefully) be played in the Rose Bowl.

Ah, true. But, is a lame duck/leaving in shame President maybe even worse than an Acting President?

You continue to assume the Big 10 will make an offer and if they do, the offer would be acceptable.
UO and UW have gone hat in hand to the Big 10. What kind of deal is a beggar going to receive in this situation?
How long will these former Pac 10 schools be satisfied being second-class citizens? The Big 10 pie is already being split 16 ways and old-line Big 10 schools are leary of splitting it even further.

You have it exactly right. When you don’t emphasize the revenue sports but focus on the Directors Cup, when you shut down hard for .Covid while the rest of the athletic world plays and when you have a third rate Commissioner who enriches himself but fails in every way in his job this is where you wind up.
I take solace in the fact that a 50% share of Big 10 media revenues is far more than the reported $20m we would get from a new PAC? Share and considerably more than we are getting now. We were in a stronger position a year ago and we are in a stronger position now than we will be in a year. We made very bad decisions and have lost the war. We could do an old South thing and fight on forever or accept reality and move on. As some one else said, it’s time to play the long game and not make future athletes and fans pay for continued errors of judgement,
Let’s just hope the Big 10 includes us. The SEC won’t and thee are only two games in town.

A half share in the big ten is 20-25% more money than what the new pac 12 deal is projected to be. With progressive escalators annually it'll give the school way more money than staying in the pac x. A six team pacific division would be a great fit.
