MGolf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-13-2023

Stanford will be well represented in the US Amateur that begins tomorrow at Cherry Hills in Denver. 312 players are looking to be among the low 64 that will qualify for match play after 36 holes of stroke play qualifying.

Among those 312 players are 5 with a Stanford affiliation:

  • Alum Jack Barber who was a former top 10 recruit in tennis whose Stanford tennis career was hampered by 3 wrist surgeries. While working on his M.A. in sustainability and business in 2020, he found he could swing a golf club without pain. Now he has qualified for the US Amateur.

Ouch. Is there some sort a timetable for Thorbjornsen to return? On the plus side, great story on Barber.

Ouch.  Is there some sort a timetable for Thorbjornsen to return?  On the plus side, great story on Barber.

Thorbjornsen estimates returning to action this fall. On Instagram he said, "I’m disappointed to share that I am unable to compete in next week’s US Amateur and upcoming Walker Cup due to a stress fracture in my back. My medical team has recommended a period of inactivity for the fracture to heal properly. While the timing is unfortunate, I anticipate being back to full health this fall. I’ve given it my all this summer and made some great memories. It hurts missing our national amateur championship and not representing Team USA at St. Andrews, but I’m very grateful to the USGA for the honor and their support. I can’t wait to get back with my teammates at Stanford and back on the course as soon as possible."

I missed one other current Stanford player in the field - Dean Greyserman.

All 6 playing in the afternoon today. No one under par right now.

No good news to report in round 1. There were some big numbers on both courses used for qualifying (Cherry Hills and Colorado GC).

Alex Yang leads the Cardinal at +2 (including one double bogey)
Karl Vilips finished bogey-double bogey and carded +4
Henry Shimp posted +5 (including a triple bogey)
Barclay Brown posted +6 (including a double and triple bogey and a bogey-bogey-bogey finish)
Jack Barber also had +6. He finished double-double.
Dean Greyserman also shot +6.

Lots of work to do tomorrow. Probably need to finish at even par to have a decent chance to advance. Right now there are 74 golfers at par or better.

Those scores are a microcosm of the teams problem last season.  Too many big numbers by all hands too frequently.

Today's 2nd and final stroke play round has been better. I have to believe that scoring conditions were better in the morning today than yesterday afternoon. Maybe it was windier and the greens were slicker later in the day.

Karl Vilips shot 68 (-4) to finish at even par. That might get him into the match play field without a playoff. The cut line is going to be +1 or even par.

Everyone else will miss the cut.
Jack Barber shot 68 (-4) to finish at +2.
Henry Shimp shot 70 (-2) to finish at +3.
Barclay Brown shot 70 (-2) to finish at +4.
Alex Yang shot 75 (+4) to finish at +6. He was at even par over all after 5 holes, then went +6 over the next 6 holes.
Dean Greyserman shot 80 to finish at +15.
