Stanford’s Cameron Brink Makes History After Signing NIL Deal With New Balance (msn.com)

On3 also marks Brink’s NIL valuation at “$200,000, which ranks No. 8 among current women’s college basketball players.” Cameron Brink clearly secured the bag with this deal."

Congrats to her, but $200k is "clearly securing the bag?" A bag of what? Her first mortgage would be a lot more than that. So she clears something like $130k? I wonder if anyone is running 401Ks for the NIL recipients. They aren't employees, right?
Granted, not bad for someone in college and better than a poke in the eye. I guess I was struck with the 'securing the bag' thing. And memories of putting kids through school. And that first, second, and third mortgage.

Maybe they meant securing a
Birkin Bag?

....
No 401K but could put $6,500 in a traditional IRA. Unless that 200k is over multiple years, she would not qualify for a Roth IRA. Starting as early as possible is a good idea.

Veering off-topic, but I'm always nervous about Roth IRAs. Essentially the current Congress is offloading the reduced tax revenue to future Congresses. Those folks in the future may not like that very much.

Can always do a backdoor Roth contribution. Should really no longer be called a backdoor Roth since the IRS confirmed it is completely above board.

$200k for a college women's bball player to me is securing the bag. Park that in the stock market, and it will might be enough for her to buy an entire house in her thirties.

It's usually a problem when you start a reply post with "Not to be that guy, but...."
Where is this house?
Average rate of stock market return is 10 percent. Parking the $130k net NIL proceeds in a market at 10% for say 10 years (her early 30s) gets you $340,000. Say for 15 years (her late 30s) gets you $540,000.
To have $1.5 million for a decent house somewhere decent and giving it 15 years, the annual ROR starting with $130k needs to be 18%. Not impossible, but pretty risky. Could just as easily wind up with $15,000.
She'll be fine and earn far more than $200,000 over the next decade.
And I'll get better hobbies than calculating compound interest for internet sport.

Why are you being so negative about a great deal for a WBB player? Is this one deal supposed to buy her a house in Palo Alto? How many people here could buy a house in the Bay with their first paycheck? This is great $$ for a WBB. Definitely “secured a bag.”

Yeah, I knew that would happen. My mistake.
Happy she's getting a bag, noting it didn't say the (only) bag, and hope she gets enough bags over the years to buy as many houses as she wants, or doesn't want.

I took a few moments to try to read the original article, which seems to have been written by an early version of Chat GPT. Virtually unintelligible on the key details.

I get that there are a lot of very well heeled folks on the board. But $200,000 a year as a 22 student-athlete is a pretty good chunk of change.
RE: Cameron Brink NIL Deal -

I don't believe Cameron's NIL deal is only for name, image, and likeness. I expect it requires time commitments, whether to fly to NY or Paris or where ever for sponsor events or photo shoots or TV spots. Not to mention whatever time she needs to spend with her agents, lawyers, CPAs, and financial advisors handling her side. And, this may increase the demands on her by fans or dealing with social media.
All this may very well take away from her 9-month a year full time commitment as a student, and the over-and-above effort that it takes to be a student-athlete, especially at a high level.
There are only 168 hours a week. Whether one decreases sleep, social hours, study hours, or practice hours, the extra time for NIL has to come from somewhere. My guess is that all will be decreased, affecting her as a student, etc.
