OT: UW's AD leaves to become U$C AD - fullmetal - 08-21-2023

Jen Cohen, one of the few female athletic directors in D1 college sports, has left Washington to become the AD at U$C.  Guess she wanted to work at a school that was getting full revenue shares in the Big 10.

It's kind of surreal because this is an excellent hire, something U$C almost hasn't seemed capable of. Briefly worked alongside her in a past job and she's outstanding. Hate to say it, but the future is really looking bright down in south central LA.

from Seattle Times article on Cohen's move describing UW financial arrangements with the Big 10:

According to a source within the athletic department, UW will receive a partial share of Big Ten media rights revenue — stemming from its deal with FOX, NBC and CBS — worth $30 million in Year 1 and an additional $1 million each year through the contract’s conclusion in June 2030. (The school can borrow up to $10 million per year against future earnings as well, to cover added travel costs and other expenses.)

I think Jen Cohen made some great hires for UW while she was there.  U$C having a female AD is truly a step forward for gender equality, especially if she cleans the toxic mess that Bohn left behind.  It felt like she was hired at UW for something similar, a reputation cleanser and fresh start.

I fail to find evidence that USC has
Quote:Nonetheless, is this the kind of behavior a university wants from its leader, especially a university that dramatically improved its academic standings in the last couple of decades to where it is no longer viewed as the University of Spoiled Children?
I really still see them as I always have. There are some good programs at U$C, and there are a lot more really average ones. Their current financial situation isn't helping. All is not Roses in U$C land right now.

u$c will still shoot themselves not only in the foot but also the fanny.  They may go a 2-3 years without any issues, but in time it will happen again simply because they are u$c.

It was helpful that Cohen had the reputation of being a hardworking ‘adult in the room’ who wasn’t grandstanding to get hired as AD. She kind of broke through the glass ceiling by accident in a moment when UW needed someone who wasn’t a toxic CEO type. Leaving aside her WBB head coach hiring error, she’s made great decisions for the most part and keeps a measured, low profile. I got to talk to her a couple of times. Really seemed much too genuine to be an AD. And I say this in admiration. I liked her a lot and (wearing my Seattle hat) I’m sad to see her leave Washington.
