OT: "The Boys in the Boat" - cctop - 08-25-2023

The rowing comments in the ACC thread reminded me:

A while back someone recommended the book "The Boys in the Boat" about the UW crew team who won the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

It's wonderful.  I recommend the abridged version unless you have a lot of time to kill.

We've been talking about potential travel issues with Stanford joining the ACC.

In the 1930's the west coast rowing elite were Cal and UW.  Cal squads had won the previous two Olympic gold medals.

For UW to compete with Cal and the other California schools, it was a full day's travel each way, and to compete with the national powerhouse teams on the East coast it took them at least three days on the train.

For such a long book it mostly glosses over their travel, which must have been a big deal for the kids back then.

I heartily recommend this book as well. It's a great story and the writing is simply outstanding.
It will be released as a movie on Christmas Day this year. Even if the the movie is outstanding and worthy in its own right (and I really hope it is), you'll be missing out if you don't read the book, as there is so much detail in there and the story is so well told that all of its goodness simply can't be conveyed in a ~ 2 hour movie.
