Thanks for the heads up, ca245.

That's the #1 men's soccer team, by the way, per Top Drawer Soccer, after two convincing wins over ranked teams.

Women #2 after the beat-down of Duke.

RE: Men’s Soccer - Spiny_Norman - 09-04-2023

chippy game. 7 yellow cards and 28 fouls with 17 minutes still to play.

Stanford leads 1-0.

RE: Men’s Soccer - cardfan77 - 09-04-2023

ugly ugly game. Looks like the team played without Mark Fisher and Will Cleary. Glad Stanford won 2-0.

RE: Men’s Soccer - 81alum - 09-22-2023

Men's Soccer beats Saint Mary's 4-0, with 3 goals coming off of corner kicks.  They are now 5-1-1.

RE: Men’s Soccer - 81alum - 09-28-2023

Stanford is tied 2-2 UCLA after 80 minutes.  A dramatic game.  Let's see how it concludes.]\

2-2 tie after 90 minutes, final.  5-1-2 so far on the season.

RE: Men’s Soccer - BACardinal - 09-28-2023

Normally Stanford is the more aggressive and physical team but in this game UCLA dominated in the air bodied the Cardinal off every 1v1. I also noticed Stanford looked really tired in the first half and ran out of gas in the second.

RE: Men’s Soccer - Spiny_Norman - 09-28-2023

Stanford still winless in the P12 after 3 games.

RE: Men’s Soccer - 81alum - 10-02-2023

We tie San Diego State 0-0.  We took 13 shots, 4 on goal, SDS had 8 shots, 2 on goal.

Was San Diego State's defense so much better than UCLAs?

Downed by UCLA 1-3.

Blitzed at the start of each half.

Having not watched the Men's game in a few years,  the pace is very frenetic.

Pretty solidly outplayed UCLA despite the score, but story of the season is:
1. This team can play some very pretty soccer with nice movement and ball circulation but
2. It doesn’t always translate into a lot of shots which they sometimes struggle to finish and
3. Too many errors on defense in games where they are in control like the UCLA game

As a side note, College soccer officiating is truly a travesty. Watching the last 5 games on TV I have seen 2 blown handballs in the box, a goal called back for goalie possession when the goalie was f$$ing around with the ball at his feet, 2 bench cards, a card for dissent 15 seconds after a bogus yellow, and 4 out of 5 games that looked like brawls more then soccer games. Oh and I have learned that grabbing a players shirt, shorts or both from behind on a counter isn’t a card and may not even be a foul. Just appalling stuff.

But to your point, frantic is a guaranteed outcome when officials allow the level of physicality I have seen in those games. You can’t afford to hold the ball very long, because you will get crushed.

Anyway this team can beat anybody or lose to anybody in the tournament. They will truly be the mid tier seed no high seed wants to play if they can get that far.

RE: Men’s Soccer - cardfan77 - 11-11-2023

Stanford defeated Cal 2-1. Both goals by Dylan Hooper and Mark Fisher were sensational. A must see.

RE: Men’s Soccer - DenverCard - 11-11-2023

What a war!  47 fouls, per the announcer.  A mutual beatdown; not aesthetically pleasing.

Except for the goals -- Best two all year.

Yet only 4 cards. That is only sort of trying from an officiating perspective.

Nice Stanford goals, but the one they gave up again is the problem all year.

RPI has us 18, Massey top 10. Since the selection committees mostly just follow RPI, figure a 5 seed +/- 1 line.

RE: Men’s Soccer - cardfan77 - 11-13-2023

Seeded 16 and will play the winner between Omaha and Missouri State. If Stanford wins they they will likely play Marshall, seeded #1

Getting old and forgetting its 48 Teams with individual seeds. We ended up 2 slots up vs. our RPI. Good news is 16 was the last seed and the last bye. Bad news is we get #1 Marshall next if we win Rd 2, but the 3rd round was going to be hard regardless.

Stanford hosting Missouri State in a 2nd round game. The Cardinal fell behind early, but then scored twice to lead at the half 2-1.

Only 4 shots on goal total, 3 of which have gone in. If the box score is accurate, Stanford already with 3 yellow cards, Missouri State with 0.

RE: Men’s Soccer - Spiny_Norman - 11-19-2023

Stanford wins 3-1! A perfect day for Stanford sports - wins for men's soccer, women's soccer, men's water polo, women's volleyball and women's basketball.  All right now!! A nice way to rinse out the bad taste of yesterday's football game.

Stanford advances to play the top seeded team, Marshall. That means a trip to Huntington, West Virginia.

Through halftime and the cards looked legit. Actually, the ref has been pretty solid for a welcome change. Beautiful free kick for the first goal. It is really hard to get the ball down fast enough from just outside the 18. Lovely second goal including the build.

The goal against thought continues the brain freeze problem on defense. The men were dominating but got caught on a counter and made about 4 individual errors to give up the goal. At some point that pattern will sink them.

When Adnan missed a point blank shot in front of the goal around 4 minutes and then give up a goal later, I thought Stanford was doomed. So glad to be wrong. The team responded well. I like their chances against Marshall
