Other Games this Weekend - Austroturf - 10-07-2023

So far, OU is dominating the line of scrimmage and getting the breaks vs. Texas.  Ewers has had two picks; and Sark has had to resort to trick plays to keep some momentum.  7-0 Sooners.
Update: Texas gets its own break and blocks Oklahoma's punt for a TD.  All level in the Red-River Rivalry with six minutes gone in the 1st quarter.

Nathaniel Peat lost the Mizzou RB job to a D2 walk-on transfer and does not have a Stanford degree. That sucks. (Mizzou-LSU is a great game, which is why this came to mind. The D2 transfer has 3 TDs.)

Austin Jones lost the USC RB job to yet another transfer and does not have a Stanford degree. That sucks.

They gambled, and the decisions have not really panned out for them.  Foregoing the Stanford degree is further salt in the wounds.
The Texas-Oklahoma game was truly memorable.  Drama from start to finish.  In the end, the Sooners made the plays when it mattered most and prevailed 34-30 with a TD at the 0:15 second mark of the fourth quarter.  The Red River Rivalry lived up to its billing.  These teams will probably meet again at the end of the regular season.

imo bonehead time management by sarkisian cost the game. i am in austin visiting a college friend, therefore rooting for texas. tied with 4:42 left, texas has the ball, so we're yelling at the tv, "use clock, use clock!!" but noooo...sark has texas run hurry-up despite all 3 time outs left and kicks the field goal with 1:17 left. that gives oklahoma plenty of time to tie the game with a field goal and just enough time for a td, which they got.

Good analysis.  Sark should have burned more time and made that FG come a lot later.  OU had used all its TOs.  Sark also failed to go for the kill down close and went conservative on 3rd down to set up the FG.  If his defense had done its job, the strategy might have worked.  But a string of big chunk plays and the PI penalty gave OU the chance to close it out.

Bruins had 3rd and Goal at the WSU 5 with 7 seconds to play in the first half.  Leading 9-3, they had the chance to go up 16-3 or, at the minimum, 12-3.  Instead, they suffered a pick-six to close out the half and now trail 10-9.

Watching Bama and A&M.  Milroe throws a pick, then Johnson throws a pick.  A&M up 17-10, but Bama is threatening.  Milroe looks a bit like Bryce Young until he doesn't.  Never count out Saban and his Crimson Tide, but they do not look as potent as in years past.

The only good that comes of this is a cautionary tale. Two purportedly intelligent individuals who had the brass ring fall into their lap and they threw it away. Be interesting to see where they are in 10 years with their non-Stanford degrees.

We all remember Mario Cristobal's epic fail in the 2018 Oregon-Stanford game, but he has now topped any of those late game miscues with the Ducks with one of the worst end-game mistakes ever. Miami has run the clock under 40 seconds, and Georgia Tech has no timeouts. One knee and the game would be over. Instead, Miami's RB fumbles trying to get extra yardage. Then, with 10 seconds left, a GA Tech WR gets open on a scramble drill play to score the winning TD.

Miami's undefeated season is over in absolutely heart breaking fashion.

Unfortunately, the Condoms had the better end in Triple OT.  Note: Arizona nearly punked the 9th-ranked Trojans in the Coliseum.  Unless Riley has some secret sauce for this team, I would not bet on them to get anywhere near the CFP.

Wow, just watched the replay of that ending.  What was Cristobal thinking?  A simple knee in the backfield would have ended it.  The commentators absolutely panned the Miami coaching staff for that decision: "One of the biggest coaching mistakes ever on this level of football."

OU-Texas had a legendary block by Stanford transfer Walter Rouse, who ended up blocking two Longhorns on the game-winning TD pass.

All things considered, it was the most enjoyment I’ve gotten from a day of watching CFB this year. Probably not coincidental that it was a Stanford bye week.

And I disagree with all of you who think any athlete who leaves Stanford to earn a degree elsewhere has axiomatically committed an act of self-harm. Opportunities in life are truly where you find them. A searcher’s mentality isn’t bad.

It’s probably true that transfers out of Stanford are going to be more common than in the past, as they are throughout college sports. Tsk-tsking past the graveyard is both sad and ineffective.

USC was undoubtedly "flat" against Arizona. That said, Arizona played much of the game with 7 defensive backs. They basically dared USC to run, and USC mostly couldn't/didn't do so. There have been serious concerns about the USC defense all year, and this game certainly didn't put any of those to rest. Arizona scored lots of points against them. This game did however raise questions about USC's running game. It just wasn't all that effective against a team that was selling out to stop Caleb Williams. Being "flat" is one thing. That happens to "everybody". However, a top-10 team should be able to just pound away at Arizona on the ground and control the game that way until they finally "wake up". USC showed no such ability. They just aren't "that good". Given their performance at Colorado, USC had to know they weren't world-beaters. IMO it is still the typical USC where all the talent in the world ends up as (much) less than the sum of the parts.

We have undoubtedly (IMO) seen the last of DeLaura, baring something really strange happening. Noah Fifita has played better than DeLaura and has not made the mental errors DeLaura often did. You can't replace a guy that is outplaying the former starter to the extent Fifita has. Fifita is also the more QB of the future as this is DeLaura's last year. Giving Fifita experience may be an important consideration, since Arizona isn't going anywhere this year. The only problem is that Fifita is even smaller than DeLaura. How long Fifita can stay healthy might actually decide the situation, not who is the better player.

Ha, you should have said hi (in Austin, here for ACL?).  

Ryan Sanborn lost, but Walter Rouse won.  Guess it's a push for Stanford transfer in that game.
