ACC Football Scheduling -
hallcity - 10-12-2023
I'm a Duke fan. I've been lurking here since the stunning news came that Stanford would be joining the ACC.
Best wishes on a smooth transition to the ACC. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with. This is weird for all of us.
I thought I would share a link to an
article by David Teel of the Richmond Times-Dispatch on future ACC football scheduling since it has important information concerning future football schedules for Stanford. Teel is probably the best connected source we have on ACC topics.
Here's an excerpt from the article:
Quote:The ACC is drilling down on a seven-year, no-divisions rotation of opponents that will sustain an undetermined number of annual rivalries while limiting the 14 current members to three games each in California, preferably not in consecutive seasons.
As since Florida State’s 1992 arrival, the conference schedule will be eight games. ...
Unlike the four-year model the ACC adopted for 2023-26 but had to scrap after expanding, every program in the seven-year rotation would not have the same number of annual rivals. For example, North Carolina could have three (N.C. State, Duke and Virginia), while Louisville might have none ...
But here’s the wild card: The mandate from ACC presidents that none of the current 14 programs play in California more than three times during the seven years gives Stanford and Cal only 42 of the 49 combined visits they need from the Eastern schools and SMU.
This means SMU will play Cal and Stanford annually, one at home, one on the road. So now we’re at 10 yearly pairings. ...
The pandemic 2020 season excepted, Stanford and Notre Dame have played annually since 1997. If the schools renew their series long-term — the Irish like to play each season in California, either at Stanford or USC — it seems unlikely those games would count toward their ACC obligations. ...

Thanks and welcome

Interesting that Notre Dame seems to have different incentives regarding California trips than the other ACC schools do. Notre Dame wants to be in California every year, because why avoid one of the country's biggest sources of recruits? I would think ACC schools, especially for football, wouldn't mind heading to California with some frequency to get their brands in front of more high school players.
And as Bob said, welcome hallcity! Your comments about loving the one you're with and that this is weird for all of us made me chuckle. Strange times, indeed!

Thanks hallcity.
Just based on your quoted excerpt (not reading whole article), this is how I interpret it.
The ACC 14 are committing to no more than 3 away games each in CA over the 7 year plan.
That's 42 games in CA. And assuming we get half, so 21.
Over 7 year plan that's 3 east coast ACC visitors a season.
Assuming we play KAL and SMU every year (alternating home and away years).
That leaves 3 more ACC conf games we must play each season, so 3 east coast trips for us each season.
For a 12 game season it means on average 1 outta 4 games we head east.
But there's more travel involved over the season, to SMU every other year, plus if keeping up Notre Dame, the every other year trip to midwest.
Plus whatever other travel for the remaining OOC games.
But anyway, if my math is right, sounds like 3 east coast trips a season, hope Coach TT and team ready for that.

it is possible to do a week long trip before school starts to get two east coast game played on consecutive weekends

Of course this is football. One of 15 possible Stanford teams traveling east in the new ACC

Yes, and I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing to resurrect Dante to let him plan out a new 10th level specially reserved for those causing the implosion of the PAC-12.

so let's speculate on other sports
men's basketball
- currently the ACC plays 20 conference games
for 2023-24 Teams will play their two primary rivals both home and away (four games) and four repeat opponents both home and away (eight games). The remaining eight opponents will be single games, with four at home and four on the road.
hard to make playing everyone at least once work with 18 teams and 20 games so maybe they go to 21 conference games
- two primary rivals home and away (so for us Cal and SMU?) - four games
- two repeat opponents (home and away) - four games
- the remaining 13 opponents will be single games with seven/six at home and six/seven on the road - 13 games
so nine/ten conference games road games in the central and eastern time zones each year so five big roadtrips a year?

The
ACC football schedule "model" release for 2024-2030 is scheduled for 6-7 pm EST on October 30 on ACCN. I don't know whether the "model" is just the protected rivalries and some process for scheduling conference games each year or whether it's the actual future schedules. If nothing else they need full final schedules for the 2024 season by January and that's coming up soon.

Scheduled too early for West coast viewers. I wonder if they'll start rebroadcasting this and other news shows that start at 6:00 or 7:00 Eastern at 8:00 pm Pacific.
It's an adjustment for everyone.

I did notice that “ACC PM” is scheduled for 1-4 PDT. I assumed it might be during the last hour of that show.

It looks like the model schedule program is one hour and is repeated every hour for 5 more hours until 8-9pm.
