I think Melvin would be perfect. But hedging my vote here as there could be the perfect manager 20 years younger that I don’t know about.

Ron Wotus coached two SFG minor league affiliates to league championships (California League Manager of the year in 1991 when they went 92-44 and Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year when the Firebirds went 88-55). He interviewed for manager jobs with the Pirates, Dodgers, Mariners, Rays and Nationals. He was the Giants' bench coach during their amazing run from 1999-2017 under Baker, Alou and Bochy, also coached under Kapler in the 107 win season.
I wonder why he couldn't get a manager job?
Melvin's fine, and could probably help get free agents in the door. Also think Steven Vogt would be superb.

Could be quick. He apparently is highly respected among Pacific Rim players. Yamamoto and Lee Jung -hoo are two high end targets. Especially Yamamoto.
He’s who I’ve wanted from Day 1. So, bias admitted and fingers crossed.

Vogt is both the bullpen and quality control coach for Seattle and he checks all the boxes for an MLB managing career, similar to Mike Matheny. He had a ten year MLB career with seven teams including the A's and Giants and was a two-time All-Star. He had a career-high .804 OPS with the Giants in 2019 and was extremely popular in SF as Posey's backup. I have been a Melvinphile from the day I read The Athletic article about the dysfunction in SD. SF needs an experienced leader. Zaidi cannot take any risks at this point. Melvin is the right guy at the right time.

In the 2023 SFG thread, we talked about the decimation of return visitors and workers to San Francisco. San Jose is now experiencing 96% of the visits to the city's urban core that occurred in 2019, the final full year before the COVID shutdown. That's the third highest level of activity in the 66 downtown districts in North America, trailing only the 103% for Las Vegas and 97% in El Paso. These results are from a study conducted by the University of Toronto, used mobile phone activity as the measuring stick. Office worker returns in San Jose are at about 40%.

Was downtown San Jose that vibrant before the pandemic? Always has seemed to me to be somewhat quiet for a downtown of a major city, so 96% of a lower number is still a lower number. Similarly, what's considered downtown in LA? What I considered downtown is always dead after dark. . . .

It's just a broad comparative. San Jose's downtown is as it ever was, and San Francisco's is 1/3rd smaller. Not so great for SF Giants foot traffic.
There are things to do in downtown San Jose...maybe not things that you and I would want to do, but they have a number of interesting activities. The roots in San Jose's boring downtown are more than a century old...in the 1920s, the city fathers essentially conspired against allowing major department stores in downtown San Jose to protect their businesses (e.g., Hart's Department Store was the "big" store for quite a long time). So they didn't have big box department stores, no Macy's, Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, not even Sears or JC Penney. Although interestingly, Mrs. Mick's shopping contacts tell her that Santana Row in West San Jose and Valleyfair (technically in Santa Clara, but across the street from Santana Row) are attracting more high-end shoppers and sales volume than Union Square and Stanford Shopping Center.
It doesn't mean that the Warriors or Giants will ever play in San Jose, but they did attract the Sharks and 49ers...

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea. He's coached for 20 seasons, finished first in his division 4 times and made the wild card four times. His teams were ousted in three of the four wild card games, and ousted in the NLDS three times. So in 20 years, Melvin made it to the NLCS just once and was ousted in five games. This year, he had eight Padres players who had multiple all-star games on their resume, along with six other players who were gold glove winners, or finished in the Top Five of Cy Young voting multiple times or were single-time all-star game participants. In other words, he had a LOADED roster...that had to win 14 of their last 16 games to finish 82-80 with the third highest payroll in baseball at $249 mms., and finished three games ahead of the Giants, a team with a roster nearly bereft of hitting and fielding talent.
Melvin doesn't excite me at all. I have the exact opposite feeling, and it will be the first year in many, many years that I won't buy a ticket. And after they go 3-7 in their first ten games, I probably won't watch them on TV either.
If this team wins 78 games next year, I will be very surprised. But hey, BoMel ix a 3x Manager of the Year (Kapler only won it once). Maybe BoMel will turn all the first and second year players into All-Stars. Here's hoping...

Couldn’t disagree more. Perfect choice. Experience. Respected. Has worked with FZ. Analytics oriented but not dominated. And allegedly highly respected with Pacific Rim players. Since Yamamoto and Lee Jung- Hoo are heavily on their radar, he can perhaps help them close the deal.
He got Pads past Dodgers in ‘22 NLDS. From what I’ve read, big disconnect between he and Prellar. And Prellar is hell to work with.
Melvin wont have openers going three games out of 5. Nor will he PH for a respected veteran with a AAAA player, just cause the AAAA player stands in the right hand batters box and a lefty is pitching. Melvin will platoon as necessary. Use analytics as all others do. But he gets that these are players, not chess pieces.
Yes, his A’s teams were ousted. As Billy Beane so aptly put it : “My shit doesn’t work in the playoffs.”
As for how many they win in ‘24. I’d kind of like to see the roster first……

If they get Ohtani, Yamamoto and Lee Jung-Ho (KBO), I'll be very impressed. And if they sign those three plus two of the following (SS Munetaka Murekami, probably not eligible until 2025) and pitchers Naoyuki Uwasawa, Kona Takahashi, Shota Imanaga, and Yuki Matsui, I'll buy season tickets.

Mick is generally one of the more positive Giants observers. His antipathy towards Melvin is rather surprising.
Melvin is exactly what is needed at this time - his demeanor is Bochy-like - a solid, calm, highly respected manager (not coach! - a pet peeve of mine) who will lead SF back to contention.
92 wins? Why not? Heck, I am more excited about the team’s prospects today than at any point over the last six years. Now it is time to bring in some free agents and make some trades (SF needs an immediate infusion of talent and that may require giving up some highly regarded prospects).

I'm 51% positive, 49% indifferent to Melvin's hiring.
I acknowledge he is a legit MLB manager with credentials. I need to see the moves made to improve the roster before feeling good about the Giants again.
They seem to be motivated to improve, but I don't know if they are looking to build a short term reclamation project or something sustainable. I'd rather see something sustainable.

Dieter Kurtenbach of the Mercury News says "The Giants couldn't have done better than Melvin in this managerial search."
It's also reported that Matt Williams (who spent 10 seasons with the Giants from 1987 to 1996) is in consideration for other roles as is Ryan Vogelson and Pat the Bat Burrell. Only Kai Correa and hitting coach Justin Viele are under contract. Nakken and Hallberg are not. And supposedly Andrew Bailey wants to move closer to his family on the east coast. Might also be interesting to have Steven Vogt as bench coach and heir apparent to Melvin. Melvin is considered a serious candidate for the Cleveland Guardians' job.
