Do you have any interest? - OutsiderFan - 10-28-2023

Obviously, very few people care about Stanford Football these days, at least insofar as discussing the team or being emotionally invested. I mean nobody is going to go to bed angry when Stanford loses tonight.

Typically, we might be interested in the other Pac-12 teams when the local outfits are horrible, but the conference is disintegrating. Do any of you care about what happens in light of this, and are you even watching Oregon-Utah? Do you care to see USC get clocked by the Ducks and Huskies?  Do you want to see the Beavers do well since they are getting totally boned by the CFB power structure?

I believe you asked 4 questions here.

No, no, no, and yes.

RE: Do you have any interest? - 81alum - 10-28-2023

Good question, Outsider.

For me, the answer is "no."

Stanford football going to a low ebb would be bad enough, or the Pac 12 implosion would be terrible, but having them both in the same year completely quashed my interest.

I was never a serious Pac-12 football fan, but I will say I watched some other Pac 12 games that impacted Stanford.  I was against the Pac 8 becoming the Pac 10!  (The Arizona schools did not seem sufficiently pacific to me!) But over the decades I developed a bit of west-coast loyalty.  There was truth to the criticism of college football that west coast teams got short shrift, and so I usually (USC excepted) would cheer for other Pac 12 teams.  A kind of underdog mentality.

Now--nothing.  The only interest now might be an even greater hatred of USC and wishing it ill.  But not enough to waste my time watching them.

While I realize that the chances of Stanford winning tonite are pretty slim, I'd like to see us at least give the Huskies a good game, in other words avoid the U$C/Oregon/UCLA style butt kicking.
To me the Ducks are the junior mercenaries after the Condoms, so I would like to see Utah beat them and will probably watch the game.
Sorry to see the conference go, but I think the silver lining in the cloud is that we will at least get to see Stanford play some different teams in the future.
As far as the Beavers are concerned, they have spent enough time in the past as conference doormats that it is nice to see them doing well.

I am in the NO, NO, NO and YES group.  I have lost interest in even checking the scores outside of Stanford's game. I am actually spending more time, still not a lot, checking ACC information.

RE: Do you have any interest? - 82lsju - 10-28-2023

I'll be at the game, given the expected outcome likely will not be there at the end.

If there is an interesting game on OTA (we're an OTA house) when I get home then I may watch it if it is close.

Hope Utah beats Oregon.

Hope USC loses out (UCLA too).

if we can't be conference champs then I hope OSU wins it.

Beat Cal!!!

RE: Do you have any interest? - Goose - 10-28-2023

I am still interested in how the "current" and soon to be former PAC-12 teams do. I am not particularly emotionally invested in the outcomes, but I will follow them. There is a history there that drives my interest.

For quite some time I have found it difficult to actually watch football on TV because the frequent commercials destroy the entropy of the experience. I can do something else while the game is on and miss very little of the action. It is a "background" event. I guess the commentators like it because they don't have to fill the airtime between plays as much :-).

I think almost all of "us" on this board had very low expectations for Stanford football this season. I am also attempting to be "clinical" and not emotional about what I observe, and to make no judgements about the new staff until the end of the season at the earliest. I have/will attend the home games because this is the last year of the PAC-12, even if the games are sometimes not close. I do not promise to stay to the end in all cases.

RE: Do you have any interest? - gailtate - 10-28-2023

I'm interested only in Troy Taylor. What he does, how he does it and how he deals with the crap-show he was handed by ShawBernie. I root for his success.

Do any of you care about what happens in light of this? No, other than that I find it ironic and mildly amusing that the Pac-12 is playing the best football with the best quarterbacks of all the football conferences. I hope UCLA and USC get waxed in the Big-12, and to a lesser extent, Oregon and Washington. I don't care about AZ, Colorado or ASU, but I will be very happy if Utah gets tossed into the wood chipper. And I hope Cal kicks ACC butt next year, and that Stanford goes 15-0.

Are you even watching Oregon-Utah? Not with a gun to my head would I watch that game or even read about the results.

Do you care to see USC get clocked by the Ducks and Huskies? Kinda, yeah. My entire life, I have rooted against USC's opponent that week. Once they turned traitor, I hated them even more. I hope they lose 100-0 every single game and get put on the worst possible NCAA sanctions.

Do you want to see the Beavers do well since they are getting totally boned by the CFB power structure? Yes. I hope both OSU and WSU win big in court, that they reap all the benefits of running the Pac-12 conference, that they dismantle the MWC and turn it into the Pac-12, and that they crush all comers except Stanford in the future. My brother graduated from Oregon State, my mother in law attended Washington State.

zero interest.

RE: Do you have any interest? - needle - 10-28-2023

The answers to this thread are why I rarely recognize sentiments similar to my own. It probably boils down to being a CFB fan long before I followed Stanford.

Of course I am interested in Oregon-Utah! It is a very good CFB matchup featuring a Utah team that is resurgent behind a back-up QB whose success could not have been easily predicted and an Oregon team who is going to mostly be remembered for getting thrashed by Georgia in 2022 until/if they win a game against a top ten opponent. I know enough about Duckfan and Whittingham that this match-up is more interesting to me than, say, Florida-Georgia, and, should Oregon and Utah play again in future years, I'll probably tune in.

There are many things to emerge from CFB that I don't like, but once the whistle blows my interest is going to be there for quality teams and quality players.

RE: Do you have any interest? - thunder_chik - 10-28-2023

No, yes, yes, yes.
I'll be watching the D'backs tonight.  May or may not watch part or all of the Stanford game.
Would love to see the Toejams drop out of the AP 25.  Dare I say, "Go Kal"?

RE: Do you have any interest? - chrisk - 10-28-2023

Oklahoma - Kansas had a weather delay in the second quarter, won’t finish before Oregon - Utah starts on FOX

RE: Do you have any interest? - lex24 - 10-28-2023

I could care less about the Pac-12. In fact, I’m actively rooting for none of the teams to make the FCS playoffs. It’s been wonderful to see USC get trashed twice in a row. Maybe they will lose a couple more. I would love to see some of the shine come off off Lincoln Riley.

To hell with them. They destroyed a good thing. Why on earth should I root for anybody besides Stanford and in my case Cal because I went there.

I suppose maybe Oregon State Washington State but they’re not going anywhere. So to the extent I’m watching college football other than  Stanford and Cal,  it’s SEC.

Have NC State and Clemson on in the background (no desire to watch the SEC and Big 10 early games), and wow, neither team is good. Haven't watched a lot of ACC football this year, but what I have seen is no bueno. With a little improvement, we'll be middle of the pACC.

RE: Do you have any interest? - msqueri - 10-28-2023

No doubt the ACC is soft enough to do damage in. The question is whether we are on the road to improvement. Very much an open question. But I’m looking forward to seeing if we can compete there.

Agree. It will be interesting to see what transpires. I expect that there will be problems that nobody anticipates at the moment. Similarly, there may be opportunities that we currently don't expect. Will be a "fun" ride in any case.

RE: Do you have any interest? - Vandelay - 10-28-2023

USC might not even beat Cal, let alone the Ducks and Huskies.

Good luck, I hope Cal crunches USC. My sister-in-law (Stanford, '90) and her husband (Cal, '89 and UCB season ticket holders) are at the game and loooooooving it.

RE: Do you have any interest? - rogpodge - 10-28-2023

There's some interest in Cal.
