WBB: Stanford Red vs Stanford White - 81alum - 10-28-2023

Preview:

Stanford plays its annual public team scrimmage today at 9:45 Pacific. Admission is free. Some of us will be there, seeking to answer all the questions that we have so assiduously posted about our WBB program over the last 7 months since that terrible night on March 19.

This will be the toughest competition our team will face until Sunday Nov 12 when Indiana comes calling.

Keeping in mind Tara's expressed concern about our defense this year, here are the top things I will be watching for:

1) Naturally, we will all be scrutinizing the freshmen and trying to gauge who is ready to contribute, how strong is their defense, etc. Agara is #3, Clardy is #13, and Ogden is #40.

2) Will Brink play? She has been dinged up, apparently.

3) Iriafen's improvement on both sides of the ball. Rebounding--will she make up for Jones's loss on rebounding? How reliable is her jump shot from the high post? How effective are her high-low passes? Unfortunately, I would guess that she and Brink may have to play on opposite teams, meaning we might not be able to answer some of these questions such as the high-low game.

4) Lepolo's offense. Most especially her aggressiveness.

5) Bosgana and Demetre. Is their three point shooting reliable? How is their defense? Rebounding from either/both would be more than welcome.

6) Can we tell anything about changes to the offensive scheme in this scrimmage? If so, maybe we shouldn't post about it here--but I have a hunch that major system changes won't be revealed until Indiana at the earliest.

7) I'm not sure Jump will show us anything more than she has over 4 years, but she has focused on her defense this off season, so keep an eye on that.

8) Will BIRD play as a practice player? Wouldn't that be cool to see her out on the Maples court again ;)

Cam is playing, looking to be moving well, nice moves under basket.

Bird not playing, instead coaching the red team, which is the male practice players plus Green and Staci.

Jump has had at least one nice pull up mid range jumper. ( more! I was late to game)

Talana usp hit a three. Brooke also has at least one three
More as game goes along.

Cam just shot, made a three. Very smooth

Down by 14 to the intramural guys in the middle of the third period. Based on performance so far, I like our chances against Dominican next week. Beyond that, remains to be seen.

Demetre has hit a couple of nice threes.

Nice run to end the quarter. Now only down by 2. Clardy looks solid.

Good run continues through the fourth period, and they win by 8. Fourth quarter turned into a 3-point shooting contest. Bosgana hit a few.

I think all the frosh look promising, but stronger on offense than d. Concerning to me, need to be more aggressive on boards. Only limited o boards, too much backing away from rebounding effort

Bird did play in the Buck/Cardinal scrimmage earlier this week.

That one was much more of a practice, with players shuffled between teams at times, and frequent stoppages when Tara saw something she didn't like, or to set up specific situations to work on, like press and press break. It sounds like today's was a simulated game. Fun, too bad I couldn't make it.

I didn't take notes but will give my impressions by memory.

Overall: Good three point shooting. Poor rebounding. I could hear Kate giving instructions on the side line "Box Out!"

The freshmen:

Clardy turns out to be an excellent ball handler, a good three point shooter, and she was quick and moved her feet on defense. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.

Agara is strong, athletic, moves like a guard but in a 6'2" muscular body. I thought her defense looked sound, and she had a couple of emphatic rebounds. She also seemed to finish well around the basket.

Ogden did not make the superstar impression on me that I somewhat expected. I'm not sure if she got enough time to inform me very much one way or the other.

The returners:

Jump does look better on defense, and she was swishing treys as per usual. On the one occasion when she moved right to shoot, she missed--the same issue when creating her own shot as before. However, she also showed confidence on her tear-drop floater and so maybe that midrange shot is going to be her go-to when she is blanketed on the perimeter.

Bosgana got on a Jump-like tear later in the game and hit a few treys. But otherwise it is too soon for me to say how much her game has changed.

Demetre's shot looked very good, not only the treys were dropping but also that perfect turn-around mid range jumper that is completely unstoppable. On defense she looked solid--I think--but I was not impressed with her rebounding.

Lepolo looked about the same to me. She hit a nice trey when left open, but she was not otherwise especially aggressive on taking her own shot.

Iriafen did not look good at first, but by the end of the game she was much improved. She finished around the basket, snagged some rebounds, and hit a short jumper. She also was on the receiving end of a High-Low pass from Brink that she made good.

Brink was playing, putting to rest any worries about her health. She has clearly worked on her three point shot and hit all net, but she was taking the ball down low in triangle position and converting more often than not against the guys. No worries there.

Papadaki, Green and Harriel all got some time. I thought Green distinguished herself the best, running point for the practice players. But the freshmen look awfully good and so it may be unlikely that these three see a lot of action. We will see.

Interesting in knowing others' impressions. Only so many places you can look in a short scrimmage, and it is easy to over-generalize based on short impressions.

Let me add that I saw both Brink and Iriafen get the ball at the high post and drive through traffic to the rim. And I saw them both pass from high to low post at other times. There are going to be options in the high-low game when they both are in.

SO GLAD Brink was able to play and looked like the All-American that she is. She was vocal on the court as well. Cam needs to be our leader.

Our offense looked stagnant at times; lots of dribbling on the perimeter and little movement with players standing around. At times, our defense seemed locked in, but other times there were mental breakdowns and the guys were open under the basket. Concerned about rebounding. We gave up too many offensive rebounds. You could see how Haley's absence is going to hurt us in rebounding this season.

Demetre seems to have returned to her (solid) freshman form; playing more in the middle than on the perimeter- catching and effectively shooting her smooth turn-around jumper.

Bosgana started. As everyone knows, she's a streaky shooter, missing several 3-pointers early in the game, but I liked how she drove to the basket on one occasion, absorbed contact and scored. Later, she hit some 3's.

Impressed with Chloe Clardy's on-the-ball defense and she can handle the ball. Ogden did not impress me at all. It looked (at times) that she was more concerned about executing the system rather than playing loose and displaying her skill-sets. Agree with others about Nunu. Small at 6'2, but very physical and aggressive down low.

Coming into today's scrimmage, I projected the Cardinal would finish 4th. in the PAC-12 behind Utah, UCLA and Colorado. Now I'm moving them down to 5th. behind USC. Sure hope my projections are wrong, but we will have a much better picture of how good this team is after November 12th.

My wife was out of town today, so I wrote a quick analysis for her over coffee after the game. Hadn’t planned on sharing it, but here ‘tis:

Team depth (from today’s play)
F - Cam (leadership, strong, scorer)
F - Kiki (aggressive, court awareness, scores up close)
G - Brooke (hustles for position, accurate scorer, neutralizes smaller guards, three point accuracy)
G - Talana (good ball control, not afraid to shoot, accurate passer)
W - Hannah (she has to become a more versatile player for us to succeed)

W - Elena (serious scorer, drives and shoots the three, inserts herself into the game)
G/F - Courtney (not afraid to shoot - accuracy will come, confident, solid frame)
F - Nunu (athletic frame, smooth, confident)

G - Stavi (moves fluidly with the ball, accurate, confident and experienced)
G - Jzaniya (defensive hustler, but small of frame)

G - Chloe (hustler, good defensive player, needs experience and confidence)
G - Lauren (basically a good player but needs to take her shots and be more assertive)

It’s not a deep team. We need a dependable backup at every position. That requires us to depend on freshmen for size. Defense is taught first. Jzaniya and Chloe are scrappy defenders.

Actually I saw 'SC scrimmage 10 days ago when I was down in LA, checking in on the Trojans and Bruins. 'SC very ragged in the beginning, coming down the court, sometimes lazy, throwing the ball away a few times. Gottlieb not happy; called a time out and when the scrimmage resumed, they were a different team. Incredibly athletic at all positions with multiple players who can drive, finish and hit mid-range shots. Not much 3-point shooting. Ju Ju Watkins had her moments, but the player I was most impressed with was McKenzie Forbes, the Harvard transfer. She can do it all. Rayah Marshall and the 6'6 girl (Akunwafo- sp?) very athletic inside. Defense insane.

Hope we catch them when they come up here (and perhaps) over-confident.

Their key will be their consistency or lack thereof. That will be Gottlieb's challenge.

Is Chloe Clardy the backup point guard I wonder? With the potential to challenge for more? I'm trying to remember how much time she got at point--she definitely brought the ball up some and looked good doing so. And there will be games when we will emphatically need two such ball handlers on the floor at the same time.

Well that's awesome that you actually did watch SC in a scrimmage recently. I do think they will exceed expectations and have a great year.

I would think Clardy could be backup PG as well as Jzaniya?

Thank you Judy! I was seated a few seats down from you and observed you taking notes in your notebook. I felt guilty that I did not have a way of taking notes!

So how about some elaboration about the parking--anybody who knows. I do not recall receiving any email message about the situation. I was surprised that the stadium parking, which is what I usually use, was fenced off. Is that expected to continue?
