Cal by 5 is consistent with the Sagarin algorithm, as usual. Personally if I were putting in a bet I'd bet against Cal covering.

I think it is a tad high, but Cal should be favored. They have actually been improving pretty steadily on offense after Mendoza took over at QB. Ott provides them with a legitimate running game, if he doesn't collapse from overwork. In the WSU game, Cal lead all the way and the final score isn't indicative of the game. Of course, the 4 WSU turnovers had a lot to do with that.
Neither Cal nor Stanford have particularly good pass defenses. However, if Cal can sustain a running game IMO we are in trouble, because we cannot. Both teams are not very good and are trying to define themselves. This leads to wide variances in performance. For that reason, both teams have a reasonable chance to win. Perhaps Wilcox will do something stupid and not run Ott until we stop him. It is also slightly possible Ott is a bit banged up. He was obviously limping at the end of the WSU game. Stanford could also put up a greatly improved run defense, but I am not betting on that happening :-).

We are a one-dimensional passing team. Daniels is the only passing QB that we have, and it looks like he's very questionable with a bad left wrist. I have seen more than enough of Lamson to know that he's a truly awful passer, despite his other attributes. I think we definitely lose without Daniels, but we should be able to compete if Daniels plays and is not severely hampered.
It's also notable that both of our starting safeties, Gilman and Edwards, are out as of now, pending further updates. Not good for stopping Cal's rushing attack. Let's hope one or both of them is able to give it a go.
It's Big Game - anything can happen!

The line creeping up may be driven by the belief that Daniels will not play. He is now being listed as "questionable" by several sources. None of that is in any way "confirmed" by Stanford, but the rumor is spreading it seems.

I have it on good authority that a Cardboard member was responsible for the banner on the Arc de Triomphe!

Quote:'Beat Cal' Hung on World's Most Famous Campanile
BY JUDY SKLAR
PISA. Italy, Oct. 22 (Special to The Daily I Forty five fearless Stanford students today invaded this town, ascended its Leaning Tower, and told the world in six and one-half foot letters to "Beat Cal."
Clad as tourists, the group from the Stanford Overseas Study Center in Florence hung an 80-foot-long banner with the red letters "Beat Cal" on it from the world's most famous Campanile.
The coup d'etat in the infamous Stanford-California rivalry was termed "tutto tempo" by awed Italian onlookers. THK MOVE came as a complete surprise to the genuine tourists both on and around the tower, in the Piazza del Duomo, but especially to the tower guards who were taken entirely unawares.
It was not until after pairs of students had been lined up on each of the tower's six levels and ropes had started to be lowered that the guard stationed 100 feet from the tower base noticed anything peculiar. He was quickly pacified by Bill Reppy. one of the diversionary force posted as part of a guided tour of the tower, who explained that the ropes were to measure the 180-foot structure.
Other guards were alarmed when the ropes reached the ground and were secured there, and they started screaming "Alto!" (take the ropes up). Quick thinking students Tony Komaroff and Stafford Smith pulling on the ropes answered merely "grazie," "prego" (thank you, you're welcome) and continued to pull while the guards continued to shout.
FINALLY the guard at the tower entrance ran to the police station across the road—the Leaning Tower is in the center of Pisa and called an officer.
However, by this time the banner extending almost half the length of the tower had been lowered in full view of a bus of passing tourists, the 70 tourists in the area •surrounding the tower, horse-carts and priests who frequent the vicinity, Stanford students gleefully snapping pictures, and the enraged guards.
Making sure that there was ample time for photographs, the students then pulled the banner back up to the top. The policeman accosted the guide-in disguise, Lee Shershow, head of the ground diversionary tactics committee, and demanded an explanation.
When the guard understood the nature of the sign, which he had thought was political, Italian elections being Nov. 6, he too declared the maneuver "tutto tempo" and demanded that California be vanquished.
FOR THIS record, he requested an explanation made in the police books and in the registry of the Leaning Tower, plus the solemn promise that the next time students hung a banner they would ask permission.
The banner was smuggled up to the top of the tower in a suitcase by Pete Jurney, the two 200-foot ropes inside the coats of students Trina Johnson and John Huber. They were lowered by four people. Jurney, Huber, Dave Steinhart and Skip Matthews.
There was another group of divertors for the guard at the top and for the curious tourists who thought someone was going to scale the tower. A pair of students secured both banner and ropes at each level.
A BUS carrying 38 Stanfordites arrived in Pisa at 2 p.m., and they were joined shortly thereafter by six who came by car and one who hiked the distance from Florence to Pisa in three and one-half hours.
"Operation Tower" was completed successfully in bright sunlight by 3:30 p.m. The Lean Pi Tow Com idea was originally conceived by the Rally Commission and Olivia Barclay, a junior, before she left Stanford last year, and was arrived at independently several weeks ago by Ken Bishop, president of the Florence Center.
The banner itself, the product of 12 hours of painting and blocking, was prepared by Penny Ingram on the hall floor of the Villa in Florence.

'Immoral 12' Drape Banner From Tower
The Campanile went Stanford yesterday. For about 15 minutes at noon, California's answer to Hoover Tower sported a 100-foot-long banner that loudly proclaimed "Beat Cal" in bright rod letters.
Ten Stanford jokesters aided by two ex-Stanfordites now doing grad work at Cal, pulled off the gag. And they escaped without so much as a suspicious look from anybody at Cal.
The Immoral 12, as the dozen named itself, laid plans under the direction of Rich Garlinghouse. Tom Sherman and Craig Hooper scouted the area last week.
The banner, made of 12 bedsheets, some donated by houses and dorms, was sowed together and painted two nights ago to the consternation of a linen concessionaire.
The 12, also including Dave Kelly, Judy Lockridge, Eric Smith, Lunette Smith, Lynne Pain Wilkinson, Jim Hurlburt and tho two Cal students, loft yesterday at 9 a.m. for a Berkeley rendezvous.
Miss Ciiatterton, dressed as an expectant Mrs., and Hooper, representing her husband, went to the top of the Campanile. Under her maternity smock was the banner, while Hooper carried ropes, locks and chains in a briefcase. Seven of the group, dressed in Cal letterman jackets, rode up at the same time. While Hooper engaged the lone guard at the top in conversation about grad studies at Cal and 15 high school kids unintentionally crowded the scene, the banner was prepared for launching.
Working on the opposite side of the tower from the guard, Carlinghouse and Sherman threw the banner over the side and affixed it with chains and locks. Kelly. Smith and one of the grad students quickly attached chains from the bottom lo a convenient fire hydrant.
The nine in the tower descended Via the elevator, just in time lo meet a group of Cal students who brushed by on their way to cut down The offending sheets. Smith and one of the grad students meanwhile calmly took pictures from the ground. And then the group left.
According to the Daily Calfornian, it took only about 15 minutes for the banner to be removed by students. Appropriately enough, the sheets were taken to the Oakland office of the linen company who owned them.

FWIW, and as an indication of how times have changed, I can't imagine that there is anywhere near sufficient interest/enthusiasm among students these days to pull off something like this, given the current state of the program. Still, it's worth noting that, the season this was done [1960, I believe], Stanford was winless [and would lose Big Game as well, going 0-10], and was coming off seasons of 2-8 and 3-7, respectively...

and then there is the ability to take large amounts of "stuff" into places like the leaning tower, my guess it that today that would be much more challenging...
