WBB how to watch? - amytarafan - 11-28-2023

Most of the WBB games appear to be on the Varsity Network and some on the Pac-12 Network. What is the best (or good) way to view these games?

My immediate response, of course, is the best way to watch is to come to the game. But assuming this is not an option for you and TV is the only possible option, then I watch the Pac-12 network broadcasts -- not sure what the Varsity Network is. Note that if you're in the Bay Area and the game is outside the Bay area, the Pac-12 network will generally cover the game even if not on Pac-12 net -- instead could be on one of the regional Pac-12 broadcasts (like Pac-12 Bay Area here, when the game is not on the full Pac-12 network). If you have a streaming service or something like comcast or xfinity, cable, or Dish net, you can get all the Pac-12 regional broadcasts. Easiest way to get to them is to go to gostanford.com and hit "watch" on the game listing in the schedule.

Spokane (Gonzaga) is the closest site to see Stanford live, so we sadly don't make it to Maples often (but we have seen them play WSU, UW, and Gonzaga and last week in Vegas). But is there a way to see the games via a streaming service (and not a cable provider). Does anyone use Fubo or Sling to watch games? and is one better?

I have been using Sling for a number of years and have been pleased with the service.

I believe Varsity Net provides the audio coverage.

There are people here that watch on Fubo or Sling. Some have used both. You'll have to figure pricing.

I use Sling so I'll describe it, warts and all.

The PAC-12 networks has 6 regional networks plus PAC-12 Insider. 99% of their 24x7 airtime is of no interest to me (old reruns, and their filler program). PAC-12 Insider is a free network that is available anywhere but won't have much on it.

On Sling, you have to buy the Sports Extra package to get the PAC-12 networks (you get them all). So, decide which set of coverage you want first and then figure out your price. Set a reminder for the end of the season to cancel what you don't want.

Sling offers the ability to record to its online "DVR", but if you're used to Tivo, Sling is really clunky. You can't add, say, 30 minutes to a scheduled program in case it runs over. If you record the next program, and only need 5 minutes, don't tell it to stop recording because it will delete the program. I find the playback controls clunky. Skip forward 30 seconds, or skip back 10 seconds, but you always get 15 seconds of spinning until it actually starts playing again.

Video quality is ok.

I have trouble connecting to Sling from my Mac Firefox but I can with Safari. Maybe that's just me.
I have no trouble connecting via the Sling app on an iPhone or iPad.
(I also have Sling as an app on a TV. I had the separate box that Sling gave out, but I didn't want to give them access to my phone, so I don't use it.)
I am unable to screen grab on my Mac from a Sling player - I get black.

Me too. Big fan. Cut the cord about a year ago and never looked back. Great for college sports. Cable/Sat prices just got too ridiculous and they were a pain to deal with. Can only devote so much resource to TV...

For me, there's two things I miss:
1) Warner channels (TBS, TNT, ...). Figured out how to plug that hole separately though.
2) Remote control. Not as fully featured going through a streaming stick vs. a cable box.

When I cut the cord I migrated to YouTube TV, which gave me live and recording capability for every channel I wanted except Pac12 and PBS. For Pac-12 I use Sling, suspend my subscription after WBB is over and re-instate it when FB starts. For PBS I just go to their site and they generally archive everything of interest to me anyway.

No fancy equipment needed. I generally use my 2017 laptop or 2012 phone and “cast” the screen to a Google Chromecast dongle (about $39) plugged into the HDMI input of my 15-yr-old TV. My ATT wi-fi delivers about 200-300 up and down and that’s more than sufficient for our household.

I made the move about 4-5 yrs ago and saved about $150/month then. YMMV of course.

Another vote in favor of Sling. During football season, I ended up subscribing to both Blue and Orange, in addition to the sports package. I also ended up subscribing to ESPN+ separately for a month (mainly to watch the Ohtani documentary “Beyond The Dreams”) which also helped with some BB tourney games. Will adjust some subscriptions come the new year.

we used Fubo in the Bay Area years back, I was frustrated because it was expensive and Fubo carried ONLY Pac 12 broadcast games. We live in Utah now and are on our second year of Sling. Sling covers games broadcast by ESPN and I can record them as well. For the games broadcast by other conferences, I open the streaming on my laptop and then mirror my laptop screen to our samsung Frame TV. You could do something similar by hooking your laptop up to your tv with a HDMI cable. Some games are available on other apps (Fubo, Flohoops) only and I just accept that I can't catch them all. Sometimes you can trick the system by signing up for a free month and then canceling. But that only works once.

With Fubo, you can record programs and fast forward through commercials when you watch them. You get 1000 hours of recording time.

I can watch on my Smart TV, phone, and laptop. I often use the app on my phone to set up programs to record, then watch them at home on my 75" TV.
