What an intriguing slate of games, highlighted by Liberty playing against the Ducks. I'll be glued to the TV all December. . . .

If Bo Nix weren't playing Liberty vs the Ducks might be a decent (or at least close) game. He has announced that he will, though. A bit surprising, but I recall him quoted as saying he really likes college football and is in no hurry to get to the NFL.

At least according to Sagarin Liberty is highly overrated, equivalent to Boise State or San Jose State rather than a top 25 team. Solid team/great Group of Five team but New Year’s Six Bowl is aggressive. Function of the record, which of course is not consistent with how the playoff slots were determined.
For what it’s worth, the top Group of Five or FCS teams:
20. South Dakota State (FCS team in the top 20!)
21. SMU (Group of Five for a few more weeks)
39. Troy
40. James Madison
44. Boise State
47. Liberty
50. San Jose State
Indiana got a coup getting Cignetti from James Madison. Troy’s Jon Sumrall is looking like a future Power Five coach. I have long felt Jamey Chadwell is a stud and it will be interesting to see how long Liberty can hold off SEC or ACC suitors. Personally if I were Cal I’d rather have San Jose State’s Brent Brennan than continuing with the current staff, but Cal is so hopelessly mediocre they probably do have to think about being careful what they wish for.

It's not their mediocrity that precludes changing staffs. It is the fact Cal can't afford the ridiculous buyout required to do so. Maybe in two years when it gets more reasonable :-).

I saw that the opening line had Oregon as a 14.5 point favorite over Liberty. That seems way too low to me.

Especially since Bo Nix has decided to play.

Based on results to date the line should be more like 21. I bet the line is a reflection of the David vs. Goliath/Boise State vs. Oklahoma dynamic. This is the Super Bowl for Liberty in a way it just isn’t for Oregon.

Agree. There is a real question whether or not Oregon will "show up". If it were U$C we would know they won't. Oregon is a bit more of an unknown, but it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the players will "mail it in". This game isn't what they wanted or expected. They also undoubtedly believe it will be "easy". Even Nix may regard it as a "cameo" appearance and not be ready to play. We won't know until the play the game.

On the other hand, Oregon may want to destroy Liberty to prove that it deserved a much higher rating or a much bigger platform. See Stanford's 2016 Rose Bowl win over Iowa by a score of 45-16.

Some of those bowl names are head-shaking, but then I’m apparently not very adaptable. I miss the days of Rose, Peach, Orange, Sugar, all in a glorious binge-watch on New Year’s Day. Sitting with my dad and noshing on Dungeoness crab sent to us in Wisconsin by my Atherton aunt and uncle. (Well, the crab — a full case, that we kept frozen outside on our back porch — only happened one Christmas — my uncle must have had a very good year — but it was childhood-defining.) I remember thinking 30+ years ago that I wished Stanford’s majestic performance against Penn St. could have happened in a bowl that wasn’t named after Blockbuster.

Yes, but beating Liberty by 10,000 points won't do either of those things. Iowa was at least a B1G West champion. Conference USA isn't anywhere near the same. Oregon is in a no-win situation. If the lose, it is a disaster. If they win, it was totally expected.

Oregon, losing by a sliver to CFB participant Washington, has Liberty as its "reward". Feels a lot like steak knives...

Oregon wins 45-6. A predictable result, IMO. I should've put some money on it!

what a day of college football. both playoff games going down to the wire.
so happy the Pac-12 will have a team in the championship game in its final season.
of course if this were 40 years ago, we would see Washington take on Michigan in the Rose Bowl, with the winner being voted national champion.
