Which team scores the first Championship in 2023/2024 year? - Leftcoast - 12-11-2023
It's increasingly looking possible that Stanford may end the fall season without an NC win. (Apologies to #2 ranked Womens Volleyball which is in the process of taking their shot.). For the fall Stanford had a lot of very good teams that were in championship contention but no dominant favorites and we washed out somewhere along the way. (Again, apologies to the Womens Volleyball)
So which teams have the best shot of extending the Stanford streak? Womens Water Polo? Womens Tennis? Mens Gymnastics? Womens Volleyball? Something else?

Stanford has won at least one NCAA team championship each academic year for 47 consecutive years, starting in 1976–77 and continuing through 2022–23. This is the longest such streak in NCAA history. The second-longest NCAA championship streak ever was 19 years, achieved by USC from 1959–60 through 1977-78. As of the summer of 2023, the second-longest active streak was five years.

WWP, MGym, Softball, all at least a shot, plus Women's Golf. Of course who knows how baseball or Women's Tennis plays out. How good a chance they have is another issue.

Yikes .... My miss on WVB. So it's up to the Winter and Spring sports to extend the streak. Go WWP and Men's gymnastics then?
We've been bailed out by Women's Tennis and Golf before but their formats make it a crapshoot for the top teams. Hopefully it won't come down to matchplay results in Women's golf!

Barring catastrophic injuries or a H.UUUUGE upset, Stanford MGym should win. In WWP, it is almost certain to be Stanford or USC. Those 2 schools have won each of the last 13 titles.
Everything else is a crap shoot. Stanford will probably be top 5 ranked in WGolf, Softball, maybe WTennis. But if MGym and/or WWP doesn't win, the streak may be over.

Those 2 schools have won each of the last 13 titles.I am inclined to think that Women's Golf really needs Rachel Heck to return to her Freshman year form, or something close, but there is a lot of talent returning, then the 24-25 recruit class is loaded, but that is a year away. Softball made a deep run solely on pitching and playing small ball to the max. Now with the transfer from Indiana, there are 63 homeruns coming to the plate every game. We hit all of 26 as a team last year. Still a very tough road, but possible.
Everything else is a crap shoot. Stanford will probably be top 5 ranked in WGolf, Softball, maybe WTennis. But if MGym and/or WWP doesn't win, the streak may be over.

Agree with others that MGym is by far the best chance even with an injury or two. The format is forgiving and we have depth. WWP is second IMO but lower odds than previous years as a lot of our top players are taking the year off to train for the Olympics. The rest are a distant third as far as likelihood. WGolf isn't as good as years past and the format is a crap shoot. We've never won in softball and always hard to get over the hump. We're a clear step below UNC (and likely a couple others) talent and depth wise when it comes to WTennis. We won WRowing last year too. No idea what are chances are this year. Any rowing experts on here?

MVB has been in the conference finals the last two years running, improving throughout the year. They lost in a close match (22, 21 and 23) to 31-2 UCLA, which destroyed all the other teams on the way to winning the NCAA championship. And UCLA returns all of their starters from last year.. Depends on how much Stanford improves and what they do at libero. They had a very young squad last year, most of them returned.

My prediction for the softball team:
50/50 chance of making the Softball College World Series.
10-1 odds of winning an NC.
More than half the success of a team depends on three players. The three (or sometimes two) starting pitchers have to stay healthy and effective throughout the season.
