WBB: Stanford 98 -- Morgan State 38 -

Preview
New Year’s Eve, at 6pm, the Morgan State Athletics come to Maples. The game will be live streamed at Stanford:

Morgan State is a public HBCU in Baltimore, with about 9000 students. Their WBB team is 4-9 this year, and ranked 318th (out of 360) by Massey. They are coming off a loss Thursday at Oregon State, which beat them 80-51. Raegan Beers carved them up inside, so I would think that Brink and Iriafen will have very pleasant evenings.
In the Oregon State loss, Morgan State was led by Joelle Johnson with 14 points. Johnson is a 5’11” grad student forward who transferred in from Northwestern State, and she leads the team statistically for the year.
Morgan State does have a 6’2” sophomore from Gilroy--perhaps this is one of those local stops that coaches put together for their players. I couldn’t find anyone else over 6’0” on their team.
They have two players who have made 10 threes so far this year, but no one stands out as a consistent sharpshooting threat. No one has attempted a great many, and the percentages are not good either.
The one danger that I can see is that they average a whopping 13 steals per game. This game could test our ball handling. I would expect Clardy to get a lot of time.
Those of you who know me realize that I am a inclined toward pessimism and I tend to overestimate our opponents. Call it a Stanford defense mechanism from the losing years when I was a student. But try as I might, I cannot find a reason to overestimate Morgan State. They are scoring 54 ppg, making 23% of their three point shots, and are under water on their scoring differential with opponents.
I’m sure that Tara wanted a lightweight game in between Cal and the serious challenge that next week's visits by the two Washington schools will pose. Morgan State must have wanted a west coast swing, perhaps for some of its players to perform for family, and maybe for more national exposure. Nevertheless, my guess is that the Stanford players will have the more festive New Year’s eve.

I’m not a fan of New Year’s Eve games in the evening. I’m expecting a very small crowd. Should have just had a doubleheader with the men.

Last year it was a little off because we changed our NY traditions… and actually enjoyed ourselves. And the next morning, I saw half the team in the hotel restaurant and got to take a photo.. it was a bit embarrassing cause I was in my PJ’s.. but I will say, being that I’ve missed the last 3 games.. I’m so looking forward to this game and being able to have a little normalcy in filling our seats in Maples. I hope to be back next weekend also, but I guess it’s one day at a time! Anyway, 81.. great preview as always.. you should be paid for your contributions to the team!

A surprising number of people early for the chalk talk.
Everyone is healthy. Brink's thumb ok. Maples is a cavern.

Our second stringers are getting a lot of playing time tonight. Harriel is on fire with 13 points and 5 assists in 15 minutes

This was a happy end to the year--a 60 point win in which so many on the team contributed. Here are a few key points:
1) Morgan State's one stat at which they excel are steals--they average more than a dozen steals per game. I looked up in the 3rd quarter and they had 1 steal. They wound up with 4, and we had 11. Clearly, our team was ready for it and had much better ball handling than we have at some times in the past.
2) While 98 points looks gaudy, we held Morgan State 16 points below their average. Their top scorer for the year--Joelle Johnson--was held to 2 points on 1-6 shooting. I thought our defense looked much improved against Cal, and it continues to look excellent, despite tonight's mismatch. Morgan State shot 26% for the game.
3) Harriel really was coming into her own. Not only did she have 13 points--is that a career high?--but her shot and free throws all looked nearly perfect, swishing nothing but the bottom of the net. And she took a couple of those shots in a bit of traffic. While she was in, I carefully watched her defense, and it was excellent. The refs were letting a lot of contact go, and Harriel was playing very close defense on the Morgan State perimeter shooters. Furthermore, I watched her ball handling, and thought it was excellent. She had a couple of behind-the-back reversals and seemed good in traffic--with one notable exception. In other words, I am now ready to say that Harriel has matured as a player and to my eye she deserves more time. She was solid in every phase of the game.
4) After her Cal outpouring, Lepolo did not take a single shot. She didn't need to, obviously. Steding at the chalk talk seemed to think it would be a kind of up and down but mostly up process to develop her offensive aggression.
5) There were some very pretty assists. I eagerly await the highlights.
6) Agara continues to impress me in every way. Offense, defense, and rebounding. I think she deserves more time too. But as Steding said, the freshmen will be inconsistent, with some fabulous stretches and some nights they regress. That is the nature of freshmen. I think Agara has been the most consistent so far.
All in all, a game worthy of New Year's Eve! Happy new year, everyone!

Today's game's score was 98-38, which is similar to
South Carolina's 104-38 win over them.
Oregon State beat them 80-51. But these scores really can't be used for comparison other than maybe for the non-starters.
First time in a long time for Stanford, Stanford held the opponent to Zero FTs. Stanford had only 4 fouls (12 for Morgan State). I believe Tara noticed Brink was winded near the end of the first half and took her out. (Brink only played the first half of the 3rd quarter before sitting for the rest of the game with 22 minutes on the court, which was high for the team.)
I felt Morgan State didn't play Stanford to win; they played their game, even when that was to try to get shots in the paint. Only 6 blocks for Brink?
Interesting that Brink had no offensive rebounds.
57% shooting is something to write home about. 25 assists in 37 FG (68%) is impressive.
Non-starters were 16/30 (53%; 11 assists(52%); 11/21 2pt; 5/9 3pt in 97 minutes) which is darn good. Remember they tend to get time when the players on the floor haven't played as a team that much.
Starters were 21/36 (58%; 14 assists (67%); 17/25 2pt; 4/13 3pt in 103 minutes). So the starters' 3PT% was not good.
Only 4 TO in the first half, and only 7 TO in the second half.
Against So. Carolina, both teams had 11 steals. Today, Stanford had 11 steals, but Morgan State had only 4 steals. That's a positive sign.
South Carolina had 63% assists so that was similar. Stanford's 11 TO was better than South Carolina's 16 TO. (So. Car. also had their starters play about half the available minutes.)

I think Courtney Ogden deserves a mention for solid play in this game. 3-4 shooting as well as 4 rebounds, including 3 offensive rebounds, 2 of which led to putbacks.

Yes she did well. I think she is coming back from a foot problem gradually. Only got a couple of minutes vs. Cal and did much better against Morgan State. We are going to need her in the upcoming games.

Our starters played fewer minutes?
One other thing--was I the only one who noticed the Morgan State coach yelling when Stanford players were taking free throws? Happened in both halves, but especially in the first. Is this even allowed?

I think he was yelling at his team to rebound or something, so it at least appeared to be coaching. I guess there's no rule against it.
