College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - Snorlax94 - 01-02-2024

Was no one else watching those thrilling games today?

I have always felt the Pac-12 - B1G matchup was the premiere post-season bowl game and now in the Pac 12’s final year, order is restored and the final game between the Pac-12 and B1G will determine the national champion, as it should be.

Michael Penix demonstrated that he is the greatest quarterback and greatest player in the country this season, and his performance reminded me of a certain Pac-12 running back who came in second a few years ago in the Bullsht Trophy awards, put on a clinic in a New Year’s Day bowl game, and ended up doing not too shabby in the NFL.

As for Bama, Saban is still a very good coach, and they have a great budget and recruit great, but I wonder when recruits will figure out that at 72 years old Saban is only maybe 50% of the coach he was six years ago. The old Saban would have had the fire to make sure his center could snap the ball and never would have tolerated all the flaws of this year’s team. Like Belichick, I think Saban is a coach whose best days are behind him.

saw two exciting games.  a long time ago, the Rose Bowl would be Michigan vs. Washington, with the winner being voted #1.
Michigan favored by 4.5.

Great games. Pac-12 will go out in a blaze of glory. Michigan favored by 4.5, I like Washington by a TD.

It's pretty amazing that we came so close to beating Washington.  As incredible as that would have been,  I'm glad we didn't pull that upset as the Pac-12 would not have been represented in the playoff.

Man, UW really almost Coug'd it at the end.  Nail biter.

“Pac-12 will go out in a blaze of glory”

or…..

The Big Ten is the winner of the latest round of realignment, adding teams that have gone 4-0 so far in the bowl season and have both teams in the final game.

How will Washington stop Michigan's running game? I don't see UW having a chance at doing that, meaning that the Wolverines can survive some mistakes from McCarthy (who did not impress me) while Penix will have to play another flawless game for the Huskies to have a chance. I like Michigan by 10.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - Giants - 01-02-2024

Michigan is on a mission.  Washington is happy to be there.

Michigan wins.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - Goose - 01-02-2024

I don't think Washington can run against Michigan. They will end up one-dimensional. The question is whether Penix can overcome that situation. While I very much want UW to win, realistically it is a big ask. If Washington can run just enough to "keep 'em honest", they have a chance. Washington also demonstrated yet again in the second half of the Sugar Bowl that they have red zone issues. Those three field goals kept Texas in the game. If even one of those was a touchdown, there would have been no drama. They should have won going away.

Michigan wins.

Then, in a few months/years, the NCAA concludes its investigation(s), sanctions Michigan, voids the win, and Washington is declared National Champion.

If Michigan wins, they can join the 2017 Astros on the list of teams that cheated on their way to the championship.

This has to be the #1 reason I hate conferences.  It's not that I don't understand Marty's rationale, but it's a pretty sad world when one of our most dedicated fans is rooting against us winning because of some kind of statement it makes about a conference whose members collectively didn't care enough to keep around.

Luckily we'll be right at home in the only power conference to be left out of this year's playoffs.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - jacket3ree - 01-02-2024

Nice sarcastic thought, but the NCAA isn't capable of tying its own shoelaces, let alone voiding a title that isn't theirs to give.  The CFP does not bestow an NCAA title. If an NCAA title was bestowed, all the NCAA would do is void that title and leave it empty. Georgetown isn't the 1985 MBB champion after it was stripped from Villanova.  No matter. UGA would make the self-declaratory T-shirts anyways and FSU could stew on how they had a chance to have been the only undefeated, non-sanctioned team had they, what's the word....,manned up and played.

I think Harbaugh will go out in a blaze of glory, tell Holly Rowe to interview the kids, not him, and catch the first plane to Vegas.

But I'll pull for U Dub because DeBoer seems like a decent dude and Penix can ball.  Basically an all Big-Ten final. Get used to these.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - PVTree - 01-02-2024

Any one else see the graphic they put up during the Washington game of the list of QBs with consecutive wins over ranked opponents in the new millennium?

Penix was tied for second with 9 before the game.. With the win over Alabama he tied our very own Kevin Hogan atop the list with 10.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - newguy - 01-02-2024

i tend to look for silver linings when we lose a game, a player, or a recruit to another team.
i really wanted us to beat Washington, but because that didn't happen, i try to find something that lessens the pain.

Did anyone also wonder why UW was handing off to a RB who then dove into the line during their last possession? Taking a knee would be safer (no chance of a fumble). As it turned out, J. Dillon got injured (out for CFP championship against UM?) on a dive and the clock was stopped for the injury, giving UT the precious few seconds it needed to mount its almost successful comeback.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - jacket3ree - 01-02-2024

I certainly wondered why they weren't taking a knee to burn all of Texas' time outs and leave maybe 15-20 seconds for them to drive the length of the field. I thought Mario Cristobal was ghost calling plays for a second. Turned out it nearly cost the Huskies a shot at the title. Ewers looked concussed when he was on the sideline but seemed to function OK. Sarkisian's second down play call with time running out was also idiotic. Saved by Ewers presence to chuck the 3rd down pass away and leave one second. Everyone knows you have to throw every pass into the end zone, so just throw every pass into the end zone.

The take a knee approach would have meant a punt around 20 seconds and Texas getting posession with about 15 seconds.

Running the ball should have created a similar outcome UNLESS the running attempts actually created a first down eliminating the risk of a punt, a punt return and/or 2-3 plays for Texas.   So there was a benefit to going for it...with some risks.

Going for the first down created a risk of injury for 2 or 3 rather simple plays (and the potential forced timeouts) and a fumble risk too.

The knee down approach would have guaranteed Texas got the ball.  Then the Washington defense would have had to endure 2 or 3 plays with corresponding injury potential for that much less talented group with less depth too.  There is actually another consideration now in college football, if Texas got the ball with 15 seconds left it was possible a defender could then get a dreaded targetting penalty and then miss the first half of the CFP.   Of course, Texas got the ball with even more time left thanks to the injury, so that targetting risk actually increased.

In hindsight the choice was clear, but if the coach believed the RBs would not fumble then opting for trying for the final first down was POTENTIALLY a less risky choice.

Both paths had some risk but the coach opted to bet on his offense and the teams best players.  Given UW's DB weaknesses all season, it was not an unreasonable gamble IMHO.   UW was rather unlucky as banking on their O resulted in an injury for a key player and a created that additional time for Texas.  That's football.

RE: College Football Championship: Washington vs Michigan - jacket3ree - 01-02-2024

Yep. That's football. Always more fun to ice a game with a first down and your offense on the field. Maybe the bigger mistake was throwing on third down before the field goal on Washington's penultimate drive, which killed the clock and preserved a Texas timeout. It's all easy in hindsight or on PlayStation.

The rule where Texas got to decide whether to force a ten second runoff after the injury to Johnson seemed unfair, but I guess you can't foresee all the angles when making a rule like that, which was trying to prevent fake injuries by someone out of time outs and behind.

He beat Georgia and lost in OT to Michigan.  I'd hardly say his best days are behind him,

You are correct. However, the "old" Saban operated in a system where he had a second string composed of 4 and 5 start athletes. They were stuck there. They couldn't leave. If the first string guy had "flaws" a second string replacement that was also all world was available. Lots easier to fix things when you have the horses. Today, lots of those second stringers jump in the portal. They aren't willing to "wait their turn" and they don't have to. Yes, this affects Saban a lot. He is used to a world where he always has better personnel than the opponents and that only a very few schools can compete with his guys. Not as true today.
