Preview:

We take on Washington at Maples on Sunday, 1 pm, in a game that will be televised on Pac 12 Bay Area.

Washington is coming off a 57-70 loss to Cal on Friday night in a game in which quarters 1, 3, and 4 were close but in which they melted down in quarter 2. The prior game they lost to Louisville, and have won all 11 other games. Their best win was beating Washington State on December 10.

Washington is 27th in the AP and 24th in the coaches’ polls, so on paper they are a slightly stronger team than WSU. Massey has them at 27, the NET at 40.

Last year we played Washington only once, in Seattle, and it was one of our most disappointing games, losing 67-72. Elle Ladine torched us for 21. Jones, Brink, Jump, and Demetre all were in double digits, but they did not get much help.

It is a little harder than normal to scout Washington than other teams, since they are the only team we have played thus far that does not post this year's stats on their website. One has to scrounge to find them elsewhere. The stats link gives you 22-23. Odd.

Washington this year is led by last year’s nemesis Elle Ladine, a 5’11” sophomore guard from San Francisco. She came off the bench to beat us last year, but she has started consistently this year. Ladine is averaging 13ppg and shooting 36% of her threes. She had a whopping 24 points in the loss to Cal, so restraining her will be job 1. She is a versatile all-around guard who scores at all three levels. She is quick enough to rebound and she also gets assists.She is not up to Kelsey Plum standards but presents a similar profile. Her best game of the year by far was Friday night at Cal.

Lauren Schwarz, a 5’11” senior forward, is a nice complement to Ladine. She is scoring 12 ppg and shooting 37% of her treys.

Dalaya Daniels, in her second year after transferring from Cal, is Washington’s post. She is a 6’4” junior forward who averages 11 ppg and 7 rpg. Seattle is her hometown which may explain the transfer.

Washington has 3 other players averaging 35% or better from three point range, so guarding the perimeter will be quite important.

At Friday’s WSU chalk talk, Steding mentioned that Washington ran much the same offense that we run. Statistically, they are a more defensively oriented team than some, averaging 68 points scoring but giving up only 48 points. They do not have our height, outside of Daniels. They do have a freshman who is 6’6” but she has played sparingly. No one else is over 6’’1”. If we can keep Brink and Iriafen both in the game and out of foul trouble, we could be dominant in the paint.

On paper Washington should not match up well with us, but that was true last year when they beat us. They are ranked as high or higher than WSU and are obviously capable of beating us. We need 1) to keep Brink and Iriafen both out of foul trouble, 2) we need to restrain Ladine and limit their perimeter shooting, and 3) we need to manufacture good shots against a tough defense. I count it as an advantage to Stanford that Washington beat us a year ago--our team will certainly not be taking this lightly and will not be surprised by Washington's play.

Washington lost to our rivals last night 70-57. I watched the game last night..Ladine had a good night, but the rest of the team looked a bit slow.

Cal is a weird team. They're not especially great at anything, but you're going to have to beat them, because they're a high motor team that keeps at it. You're probably right that the Dubs spent their scouting report energy on Jump et al. and came out flat.

Thank you Bob! I don't know why I could not find that. Every time I went to their web site it would only give my last year's stats.

SCHEDULING ALERT: PAC-12.com’s TV schedule shows today’s game from 1-2pm, vs intended 1-3. Sling echoes that. So if you set a recording by that schedule, you won’t get the whole game. You need to also record the next 1 hour program from 2-3.

Such a fascination these days with offensive foul calls. Just too many charges and moving screens. Let them play please (I just cut and paste that over and over again).

We should be dominating this team. All their points are coming from within 10 feet of the basket. I'd stop overplaying the pass, guard against the backdoor, and slide underneath the screens instead of chasing over the top. Make them hit a few from the outside. They have no one, other than the refs, who can stop Cam and Kiki. Should be a blowout.

Well, we gave up a part of our 20 point lead in that uneven 4th quarter, but not enough to make it close. Certainly a better game than WSU.

1) Lepolo covered Washington star Elle Ladine in the first half, and did so quite credibly. Bosgana was on her part of the second half. Ladine did not really heat up until the second half, and at 12 points that is about half of what she had against Cal and half of what she had against us last year.

2) The question I posed at halftime to the Cardboard gathering was this: early in her career, Brink got into foul trouble by being too aggressive on defense and going for blocks that were not there. She hacked the arms of shooters. She corrected that--seemingly completely. I can't remember a foul called on her when going for a block this year. This year, however, she is being called for many offensive fouls. Why?

3) Beside the "big three," I would say this was Agara's day. In 16 minutes she had 12 points, made her three, made all three of her free throws, collected 4 rebounds, and played good defense. At the end of the first half I was hoping that we would not melt down in the absence of Brink and Iriafen as we did at Gonzaga, but Agara and Demetre held the fort well--even slightly expanding our lead. They are maturing.

4) Nothing about this game makes me less worried about our trip to Seattle. Washington showed it could be quite competitive, and in a diffferent atmosphere the game might have been even more competitive.

5) Both sides had 28 points in the paint. This surprises me, given that we had 18 O-boards compared with their 5.

Thanks as always for the great recaps, 81! Haven't had a chance to see today's game, so can't say specific to this game, but this season the NCAA removed the restricted area for the women's game to be only the area immediately under the basket, rather than the 4 feet out. I suspect Cam is used to having more space to attack where defenders can't post up and draw a charge. FWIW, I feel like I've seen more charge calls across WBB this season, so I don't think Cam is alone here - lots of players still adjusting, and savvy defenders can take advantage.
