From the Stanford WWP press release.
Quote:Stanford's quest for an NCAA three-peat will be especially challenging without the services of Jenna Flynn, Ryann Neushul, Jewel Roemer
and Ella Woodhead. The quartet will miss the season taking a leave of absence while training and competing with the U.S. National Team in
preparation for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Neushul and Roemer are three-time ACWPC All-Americans who combined for 108 goals
and 70 assists in 2023, Flynn is the reigning MPSF Newcomer of the Year and one of four freshmen in school history to score at least 60 goals
in her first season while Woodhead was an MPSF All-Freshman team performer who appeared in all 25 games with 10 goals and nine assists.

That's a lot to miss. I'm sure UCLA and USC are missing a few, as well. Will be tough, though I expect the other girls will step up.
In the fun connection category, though her team got crushed, my daughter did block Ella Woodhead's 5 meter penalty shot in a high school game a couple of years ago. She's also been coached by Jewel's dad and played with Jenna's little sister (who is amazing, even at 14, she was a scoring machine against 18 yr olds).

Does ACC have WWP teams for 2024/2025?
Is there any other Stanford sport where you lose your four best players and still be ranked #1?

The ACC doesn't. Then again, neither did the Pac-12. Stanford, Cal, USC and UCLA all play in the MPSF, so the demise will not impact water polo.
I can't think of a sport where that would happen. Fortunately, Stanford is pretty deep.

Stanford beat UC Irvine to start the year 11-9. Hicks with 5 goals

Stanford WWP wins its first game against #5 UCI by a surpisingly close score of 11-9.
This is part of a tourney that is
broadcast, so you can see them again tomorrow at 6PM today (#5 Hawaii), and at 11AM (#9 Fresno State) and 4:30PM (#11 UC Davis).
I only caught the last minute of the UCI game, but from the
score sheet, Stanford never trailed, being up by 3 at the half. Q3 was even, and UCI got a goal closer in the 4th. I'll take the view that the coach was giving people experience rather than going all out to win this one match.
The shots were slightly in Stanford's favor. Stanford went 5 of 11 on power plays (quite good) but gave up two penalty shots (one unsuccessful).
Christina Hicks (Sr) had 5 goals; Sophia Sanders (Jr) and Kamryn Barone (Fr) each had two; Eleanor Facey (Jr) and Sophie Wallace (5th) had one each. Maya Avital had 6 saves, playing the whole game.
Next week they play UCLA and Cal at Cal, both on Sunday, both "exhibition" but they'll count toward rankings.
The week after that (Feb 3) is the Stanford Invitational, with Stanford playing 2 games on Saturday (incl. Cal) and 2 on Sunday.
Notice how the sport conserves travel by playing in tournaments for much of the pre-season, with a number of two-game days. Except for the MPSF Conf. tournament (at Indiana), all games are no further than San Diego. (I wonder if Title IX would say that the expenses for travel have to be evenly split between male and female teams.)

Stanford loses vs Hawaii in OT. Stanford was down 2 at the half, and down 3 in the 3rd quarter before tying it up by the end of the 3rd quarter, and going ahead a minute into the 4th. But Hawaii scored again so regulation ended at 7-7.
Hawaii scored in the first OT. With 38 seconds in OT, with the ball after a timeout, Stanford's goalie's throw in got intercepted. Hawaii scored into an open goal for a final 9-7 win.
The Stanford goalie (Maya Avital) had 3 great point-blank saves late in regulation and into OT. She also stopped a penalty shot.
Neither team's power plays did much good. Hawaii was 2 of 15; Stanford 1 of 11. Stanford made its 2 penalty shots, while Hawaii's only penalty shot was blocked. 29 exclusions in 38 minutes of play time.
I felt Stanford's passing was not as good as I'm used to seeing. Too many overpasses, plus that final pass. It is hard for me to say whether or not our defense has fallen off. (By the end of the game, 3 Stanford players were out with 3 majors.)
I'm afraid I don't think the players Stanford has are going to bring home a national championship this year.

Looks like yesterday's loss was not an outlier.

The team's record so far seems pretty surprising. What conclusions can we draw? Too early?

We're missing our top 4 players (aka more than half of our starting lineup) for the season for the Olympics. Going to be tough to be at the same level with that handicap.

A week ago, the schedule showed exhibition matches today against UCLA and Cal at Cal. Those games disappeared from the schedule by today (but are still on UCLA and Cal schedules). I can't find that the games happened. Perhaps they were cancelled and the team practiced instead.

Read on another site that we're missing 5 (that's 83% of our starting field players). UCLA and USC two each. Cal, perhaps one.
Lots of good polo played at non big four schools on both the men's and women's sides, too. Finally some parity, but tough this year for Stanford.

GoStanford.com indicates 4 are taking a leave of absence. All the others named in that article played in the opening weekend (so the 5th isn't due to an injury). 3 players that scored in the NC game are playing this year, plus the All-American goalie.
The number 5 might be the starters from last year's team that aren't here this year. The 5th is Aria Fischer who was listed as a red-shirt senior last year. (4 other Seniors last year are not on this year's roster)
I believe the NCAA allows players to take a year off for the Olympics. It hurt the 2020 team as well.
(If you're not familiar with WP, there are 6 field players and a goalie. Stanford's 2023 goalie is playing again this year.)
While this loss of players seems hard on Stanford this year, it might be a recruiting goldmine. If you're a top high school player, what better chance would you have to start playing under one of the best coaches right away? (But then, playing next year would be more challenging!)
The losses weren't to the top teams. There's a big drop off from the top 4 or 5 normally. Stanford's passes & playing didn't look very crisp to me.
