MBB: 90-80 over UW - magnus - 01-20-2024

Big return by Spencer Jones.   Career high 30 pts and tied the school record with 8 3s.

Hopefully,  he's back.

Yes thrilled to see him have a breakout all time game

forgot a game was even on.  that's the level of apathy unfortunately.

We have a pretty good offense (#7 in D-I in 3=point percentage!) and a pretty bad defense (one of the worst teams in the country at forcing turnovers).  When the offense is especially good, like last night or against Arizona, it doesn't matter what the defense does.  When the defense is especially bad, like against WSU, it doesn't matter what the offense does.

Haase's teams have always been inconsistent, so I expect that we'll keep having up and down games and end up around .500.

Nailed it. A couple years ago it was great defense and pretty bad offense. We've just flipped the two now, and a better offense to some means "the team is more fun to watch."

Any thoughts on what has happened to our defense?

One thing I’ve noticed we’ve struggled against this year is big, strong men in the paint. Reynaud has improved his game a great deal and is now blocking more shots, but we seem more porous inside than in the past.

Maybe we’ve weakened on the perimeter as well, I see no lack of effort, but maybe we’re being less disciplined?

I appreciate the defensive side of the ball as much as anyone, but I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of fans find it way more fun to watch their team score.

I guess it is a good sign that some of Haase's teams have been OK on D, while others have been OK on O.
That implies that perhaps one year they could be good at both.

Muir will not fire Haase, so I am resigned to dreaming that Haase can magically turn things around AND then stay at Stanford even after becoming a more successful coach.

FWIW - Some teams in the Haase Era have done much better through mid-January than this crew, but almost all Haase teams have faded in February and March.   It almost doesn't matter since most experts expect only 3 Pac-12 teams will make the NCAA tournament, and Haase history suggests Stanford will finish in the 6th-10th range.

FWIW2 - When I watch the ACC on TV those teams look so good.   Let's just say I will be thrilled if Haase and Stanford can finish 10th or better in the ACC next year.
