WBB: Stanford 80 ASU 50 -
81alum - 01-23-2024
Coming off the emotional 1,203rd win of Tara’s career--and Kiki Iriafen’s amazing 36 point outburst-- we now head off to the Arizona schools. The first stop is Arizona State, who we play at 5pm Pacific on Friday, in a game televised on Pac 12 networks.
Arizona State is at the bottom of the Pac-12 at 1-6, but they are just coming off an impressive road win over Washington, proving that they belong in the league. ASU is 9-10, Massey has them at 91 which puts them about halfway between Belmont and Pacific. NET is 119. Before beating Washington they were on a 6 game losing streak, losing to the mountain schools, the Oregon schools, and WSU.
ASU is coached by Natasha Adair, who had the formidable task of continuing in the footsteps of Charli Turner Thorne. Now in her second year, a rebuilding ASU went 1-17 in league play last year, and doesn’t seem to be doing much better so far this year. Their last home came--way back on January 7--they drew a crowd of 1300.
ASU has one dominant player and two very good additional starters. The dominant player is Jalyn Brown, a 6’1” sophomore guard averaging 17ppg and making 35% of her treys. Brown transferred in this year from Louisville, where she played her freshman season.
The other two double digit scorers for ASU include Jaddan Simmons and Trayanna Crisp. Simmons is a 5’9” senior guard who has been a constant starter for ASU going back to the CTT era. She averages 11 ppg and shoots 36% of her treys. Crisp is a 5’8” sophomore guard also averaging 11 ppg and shooting 35% of her treys.
ASU thus puts three speedy, sharpshooting guards on the floor at the same time. They all can shoot the three well and they all can drive. Defending all three will be a handful.
Beyond those three Adair has a used a few different starters. There may be an injury that has affected the lineup. 6’2” senior Treasure Hunt has not played since November.
But most often Journey Thompson starts. She is a 6’3” sophomore forward but plays roughly half the minutes, and does not have a remarkable stat line.
By far the most relevant game for us to preview is the ASU win up in Seattle. Jalyn Brown “went off” for 34 points, including going 4/5 from three point range. Crisp added 16 including 3/6 from three point range, and there was some additional single digit scoring scattered around. Washington out rebounded ASU but had more turnovers. ASU had relatively few assists. Clearly Washington had no one who could defend Brown, and Brown won the game for ASU by taking the ball into her own hands and scoring many unassisted baskets. We will see if Lepolo can stay in front of her.
I don’t think ASU has the inside presence that either of the Oregon schools had, and so the obvious strategy for us would be to pound it inside. ASU might just pack the paint and dare us to jumpshoot, so it would be a good game for Jump to get back on track.

I have a relative who was named Anita after a favorite aunt. That's another name that doesn't go well with my surname, but no one realized it until too late. She uses her middle name now.
One of my college nicknames was
Tin Mann. :-)

Sad.
Besselink was averaging 19 minutes. A 6'3" forward. She started 11 games.

I thought the ASU press release was informative:

They really have had a gauntlet of a schedule. And there are references to two injuries. Plus Jalyn Brown has been on fire in recent games. But we already knew that she was their greatest star.

Excuse me if you’ve heard this before….
#$#$#%^ PAC-12 TV is doing it again.
Same story, 3rd verse. Their schedule does not show it on their regional channels. Somewhere on their site they say it will be on Pac12HD and Pac12 Bay Area, but since it isn’t in the schedule, we can’t easily record it. I’ve again set 3 recordings to get 1 program.

I recorded. I always record it’s always 3 hours. For years now
Btw last night given espn and espn + I could have watched every one of the 7 ACC WBB games

It doesn't show up on Sling either. I assume it will be either on Pac12 Bay Area or Pac12 Arizona.

All right then. Time to break the curse. Looking forward to Cam playing at least 9 minutes in the first half (for the first time this P12 season).

I've had my share of long nights, but 3 hours * 7 games is 21 hours. ;-)

At the Stanford ASU game -
Cam is dressed and warming up
Very few people here…maybe 600 only 8 minutes before tipoff.

I won't miss this.
I was heading home from my Brooke-inspired trip to Costco yesterday wondering if the ACC Network on SiriuxXM had the start of the USC/LSU game. Alas, no, but they had the NC State/Somebody game. I have *never* heard a Pac-12 WBB on the Pac 12 channels.

It's a shame because the curtain of distraction is one of the best in all of college basketball. For men's games, Massey has ASU as one of the hardest away games in the country.

ASU's best offense is banking in 3s. Do they coach that?
