WBB: Stanford 96 -- Arizona 64 -

Preview: Stanford @ Arizona, Sunday 11am
On Sunday 11am Stanford takes on Arizona in Tucson in a game televised on Pac 12 networks. Arizona is not quite the team it was when we beat them by 1 point in the national championship game, but they still have formidable talent and coaching. We can expect a packed house with a scheduled “white out” for our game, and will get their best shot in a very hostile environment.
Arizona this year is 10-9 (writing this before their game with Cal Friday night.) They lost to our least favorite opponent, Ole Miss, they lost to Texas, they lost to Gonzaga, and they lost to Colorado—all ranked teams. They beat their cross state rival ASU, but their best win was over Utah by a point, at home. Since that win they were swept by the Oregon schools and the Washington schools. Massey currently has them at 46—virtually tied with Washington and similar to UNLV. NET has them at 59.
The first thing to note about Arizona is that the team is not deep. Only 10 players have logged any minutes this year, and one of those players, Maya Nnaji, has been out since December. Another, Salimatou Kourouma, has not played the last few games so she might also be out. All of their 8 remaining players have been logging double digit minutes, so it has been “all hands on deck.”
Kailyn Gilbert, at 17 ppg, has been their top scorer. She has been consistent, scoring in the teens to 20s every game for the last couple of months. She is a 5’8” sophomore guard in the mold of Aari McDonald. She makes 42% of her threes but usually only takes a couple of them a game, meaning she is speeding to the basket or stop-and-popping in the midrange a lot. Whatever is open, she takes. Having the quickness and agility to stay in front of her will be a major challenge.
Fifth year senior Esmery Martinez is Arizona’s second leading scorer. Martinez, a 6’2” forward, started at West Virgina before transferring to Arizona last year. She is averaging about 11 points and 6 rebounds per game.
Jada Williams, Breya Cunningham, and and Helena Pueyo have been their remaining three starters, with Salimatou Kourouma coming off the bench for more points and more minutes than some of the starters.
Kourouma, a redshirt senior on her third college, has missed the last few games, so I presume an injury of some sort, further depleting the Arizona ranks. She could be back--or not. Perhaps someone knows her status?
Pueyo we know well, and is (perhaps?) the last holdover from the national championship game. She was a sophomore that year, so there should be more...but the Arizona roster has been in turmoil the last few years. She plays virtually every minute and has a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio.
Arizona has some outstanding freshmen, and can be expected to improve in future years if the revolving door stops swinging through Arizona. Williams is a 5’8” freshman guard who scored 23 against Oregon a couple of weeks ago. Cunningham is a 6’4” freshman forward who provides blocking, rebounding, and a post presence.
With the experience of Adia Barnes and point guard Helena Pueyo, an enthused fan base, and some real talent in the likes of Kailyn Gilbert—Arizona is capable of beating us, especially if we play badly. If Brink is still not playing, if Iriafen gets into foul trouble, if Jump’s three point shooting continues to slump—the scenario for a defeat is there. However, if all of our players play well, we should beat Arizona.

Outstanding again 81. Also Dew a top recruit hasn’t played this season after a pre season injury that ended her year

Any fans making the AZ trip this year? I will be attending both games. With how tough this road trip has been historically (years past AZ State, and more recently AZ being a much improved program) - this might be "the easiest" Pac 12 road trip on the schedule this year. Although not really easy, the Pac 12 is just so tough.
Hoping for a Cam Brink return, a sweep, and everyone staying healthy.

Glad to hear that some fans are going to make the trip!
Do you fly in, rent a car, and drive between cities? Or are you adventurous and make the long drive?

Fly into Sky Harbor for game at ASU, then a rental car to drive to Tucson for Sundays game then fly out of Tucson. It's a really fun road trip. One I will miss.
Tempe and the ASU campus area are quite nice. I've always felt Tucson is kind of a dump of a city (just my opinion). However, games at McKale are much better attended with many more fans than at ASU. I was in Tucson last year when we had maybe our best game of the year in beating Arizona 84-60. Hope I can bring some good luck again.

I should note that since the preview, Arizona defeated Cal 66-55. I did not see the game, but the fourth quarter must have been absolutely scintillating--Arizona scored 8 and Cal scored 6.
Esmery Martinez had 20 for the game, going 7/10 and hitting 6 free throws, and Jada Williams had 13 points, 9 of which were free throws. I worry about her throwing her body into Brink and generating "fouls." There were 23 fouls on Cal and 17 on Arizona. Sheesh.
Arizona made only 2 treys in the game, but made 20 free throws. They shot 50% from the field. That is high.
Something I did not highlight in the preview: Arizona, and particularly Pueyo, is very good at stealing the ball. They had 12 steals against Cal, and that is not atypical. We average half that--6. Taking care of the ball will be very important.

If you're using Sling and record the game, beware that the PAC-12 Bay Area schedule (both Pac-12.com and Sling) has today's game as a 1-hour show.

I'm sure the Arizona team and fans are disappointed. I hope it is something minor.
But if Stanford wins today, I'd rather the game not have an asterisk on it.

Anyone notice that prior to Kiki's foul, the UA player was *at least* 7 seconds in the key?

Q1 1:44 Watch the head in the replay. Head leads the body when alleged contact is to the body. Flop.

The foul on Clardy late in the second seemed to take some of the starch out of Arizona. Clardy is getting a lot of PT with success.

It was the 3rd player with 3 fouls in the first half.

Martinez and Cunningham with four fouls each.

Arizona appears to be daring the officials to foul out multiple players so they have to finish with 4 players.
Seems like an Adia Barnes strategy. "Ahh.. poor Arizona... they have so few players they can't finish a game"
(ignoring the obvious and continual fouling)

Is Cam going to end up with TWO sombreros?
