MBB Stanford at Cal -

Stan led for most of the game, Cal's best player missed 2/3 of the second half, Stan was 1 for 14 in the last minutes of game, and lost by 2.

Consistently inconsistent.
The prospects of this team playing ball past the Pac-12 tourney are steadily being put to bed. Our AD has a choice -- they can decide eight is enough and make a change, or retain Haase into a new era where we are playing our conference games in the ACC and get smacked around night in and night out like the red-headed stepchild of a drunk. I'm not calling the shots, but if I were, I know what I would do.

Feels pretty conclusive at this point that Haase got to go. Can’t see anyone at this point defending him.
We’re 8 years in and it’s the same thing. We’re average. Win a few games to give us hope but lose some bad games to keep us out of the tourney.
Time to look for someone who can build a tournament team.

Another disappointing finish in a long line of disappointing finishes.
From the Bynum technical that cost us 2 points, to the Maxime travel all alone near the bucket, to the team hoisting up threes when leading by 10 and letting Kal tie the game, the whole team did great job of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
We're now at the point where we need to win the P12 tourney to get to the big dance. I was truly hoping that CJH finally got over the hump, but, at this point, I'm good with making a change and going into rebuild mode for another two years if it means we will have a realistic shot of going dancing in 2027 and beyond.

What is so discouraging is that I will now see the coach we should have had every time Stanford plays Cal.
Anyone want to bet that Madsen takes Cal to the NCAA tournament before Haase with Stanford?
Or that Madsen's team wins a game in the NCAA tournament before Haase's Stanford squad?
Or that Madsen wins a game in the ACC tournament before Haase?
Looking at Madsen wearing a blue suit and a blue and gold tie made me want to cry. How could "our" AD let that happen?

It is going to get ugly before this issue is finally resolved. I am not sure anyone is running the store at this point. I do not see our AD has having the you know what to pull the trigger, and I wonder if anyone in the administration does either. Nero and Rome sort of come to mind here.
Should we act now, put an assistant in charge, name a search committee that includes our two freshman? I worry that if we act after the season is over it will be too late, and our new basketball coach will find himself in the same situation as our football coach. A complete rebuild needed as we head into another season in a very tough basketball conference.

I thought about noting that, but it was depressing to note that last night was not unique to Madsen.
The Stanford team has more talent than most in the Pac-12, and plays that way for the first 8 minutes of most games.
Then as the other team makes adjustments that team begins to dominate.
And, sadly, this is JANUARY. Historically under Haase December and January are much, much better than February and March.
Making this change this season feels like yet another good opportunity since any Stanford basketball coach will have a whole new set of opponents and travel logistics to address next season.
I am curious about one aspect of the Haase regime. In almost every game over the last few seasons the TV commentators in games held prior to the end of January talk about how they were so impressed in their meeting with Haase and believe Stanford is poised to make the NCAA tournament this season.
How does Haase pull that off?

Our games tend to be covered by incorrigible Pac-12 homers. They invariably sugarcoat things. Sports announcers tend to sugarcoat generally and then on top of that we get heaps of West Coast bias.
Folks keep referring to the ACC as a strong conference but that’s an old fashioned view. The ACC is nothing special in basketball. Lots of ways to slice this but I’ll just point out RPI hasn’t had ACC a top four conference a single time in the last half decade. Changing of the guard several years ago that made SEC, Big 12, and B1G significantly better. By RPI at least even the Mountain West has been better than the ACC the last three years. We’re going from one lesser power conference to another, in both basketball and football.

It was kinda painful when Monty went to Cal in 2008-09, took them right into the 2nd round, then won the conference championship the next year. Lots of grumbling about Trent and Dawkins then, but they were HOFers compared to Haase.

Terrible loss. Poor decision making, ridiculous turnovers, bad fouls...Also disappointed in Carlyle down the stretch. He was out of control most of the last 10 minutes of the game. RE: Haase coaching - we got beat by the same play over and over again.

Yeah, I thought Carlyle was going to be a difference maker. Sounds like he was in this game, but the wrong kind.

Madsen did a really good job last night. We have more talent (I think). On offense, though, Cal figured out ways to exploit our "defense" and then kept running the same plays over and over and over while we never adjusted. On defense, they shut down our 3-point shooting, and it turns out that we have nothing else on offense.
How much will it cost to buy out Madsen? Someone start writing checks.

They did the same thing with Mark Fox at Cal. They said that whoever replaced him would be no better... see how that's turned out. It's unreal to me that Haase squanders your level of talent year in and out. He's a horrible coach.

At least Dick DiBiaso
looked like a coach.
But seriously, folks, the question now is how and why JH has managed to hang around like a bad odor, year after hapless year. Which reminds me of Bernard.
Go Niners!
