Some observations:

* The median Haase team is #87/#92. In other words, what we are experiencing right now is the smack dab middle norm of Haase basketball.

* The Haase era clearly peaked in 2020-2021. Even then the best he ever did was flirt with top 40.

* The narrative about Haase teams swooning late is overblown. It's happened twice (2021 and 2022) but the even more common occurrence is a midseason collapse (2017, 2019, 2023), though it's distinctly possible that the remainder of this season qualifies it as a late-season collapse. So far it isn't though - like the peak Haase 2020 team, the 2024 team has been very consistent. It's just at a blah level. 2018 is the lone example of steady improvement. In any case, the real story here is that the clear trend - 5-6 of the eight seasons depending on how this season ends - is teams collapsing at some point. It may often be earlier in the season than many of our fans perceive, but it's collapse nonetheless.

I think Coach Haase has been a phenomenal recruiter.
But he has not been able to translate that success into on court sustained success
And the lack of postseason invites, even for the lesser, but still really good, teams to NIT is confirmation that selection committees agree that we have not been good, for years.

And it’s really a frustrating disappointment to have missed out on getting Madsen for a new coach

Stanford has played in 7 P12 tournaments under Haase so far. They lost their first game 4 times. They went 1-1 the other 3 times. Haase has won 3 P12 tournament games in 7 years. That's a pretty lousy record.

And his record in March non-P12 or NIT tournament games is even worse, 3 wins and 11 losses.

what is infuriating is the level of talent on the roster.  Multiple McDonald's All Americans in consecutive years which was hard to believe with the consistent poor record.

This is what I remember.

In November and December Haase's teams are not too bad against very bad with a few losses despite a heavy dose of home games.  Given most top programs avoid similar stumbles the computer rankings are not impressed.   But at least early in the year Haase wins some of the time.

In February and March Haase's teams struggle for any wins against mediocre or good Pac-12 teams, but his rankings appear to stay in a similar range because rankings are often geared to reward quality losses, especially in neutral venues.

Impressing computer formulas with a number of quality losses is lovely, but when a team is 3-11 in pre-tournament late season games and 3-7 in Pac-12 tournament games, that is stumblin' and bumblin' down the stretch.

Good recruiter (doesn't mean much, your school recruits itself), awful coach. Hope we keep Mad Dog for years!!
