WBB: Stanford 67 Oregon State 63 (We are the Champs!) - 81alum - 02-26-2024

Preview:  Stanford @ Oregon State,  7pm THURSDAY

Stanford travels north for one of the most significant games in the Pac 12 season, in an unusual Thursday night game.

We have a two game lead over OSU and have locked up a share of the Pac 12 regular season championship. But another win will assure us of sole possession of that championship.  Perhaps more important, after the loss at home to Arizona, we need more quality wins to make the case for a 1 seed in the NCAAs.  Those wins must come on the road or in the Pac 12 tournament.  Thursday night is a golden opportunity.

Oregon State seemed like it was becoming our top competitor in the Pac 12, but they lost on the road to Washington, which we know is a very tough place to play.  OSU has only lost at home once this year—to USC—so they are playing tougher at home than we are.  We can expect a sellout, raucous crowd and an atmosphere every bit as intimidating as Gonzaga.  While this game is significant for us,  it is of gigantic significance for them.  It also may be the last time we play them, maybe for years--depending on the Pac 12 tournament.

Oregon State is ranked 9, Massey has them at 16, NET at 18.  The last time we played them was at Maples without Brink, and Iriafen had a career day.  We earned a tough 65-56 win in a defensive game—which Tara/Rueck games tend to be.  You can read about it in my last preview and our thread from that time here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=24736&pid=407087&highlight=WBB%3A+Stanford+65#pid407087

Since that game the big news is that OSU star Raegan Beers has been out since she was injured in the 2/16 UCLA game, missing the next three games entirely.  Beers took a Rice elbow to her face and collapsed in tears, streaming blood.  Later it was confirmed that her nose was broken, and her condition described as “day to day.”  Rueck has been saying he is “hopeful” she will be back ever since the injury, probably just to keep the opposition guessing.  We might or might not see her on Thursday.  I am sure that if we do, she will be wearing a mask.

Beer’s absence has no doubt hurt OSU dearly, but Timea Gardiner—already an outstanding player but not starting—has taken on a lot of the Beers minutes and performed very well.  Without Beers, OSU is not deep in the post—a similar situation to Stanford.

Oregon State always plays very good defense no matter who they put on the court—not the sort of physical defenses that Arizona, Colorado or USC put on, but a very Tara-like defense in which the tendencies of each opposing player are known and specifically targeted.  Lately where OSU has struggled it has been with offense.

OSU does have some bright points offensively.

We need to be very careful of three point sharpshooter Lily Hansford, a 6’2” sophomore guard who has become the Pac 12’s best three point shooter off the bench, at more than 50% shooting.

Gardiner is not only a great “big” but shoots 42% of her threes, as well.  Kelsey Rees, the other “big” is also shooting 36% from three point range.

In short, Oregon State has an excellent inside-out game with Gardiner and Rees (and maybe Beers?) inside but always able to pass out to a bevy of three point shooters.  You see assists all over the OSU stat sheets.

If Beers remains out, OSU may feel her loss on defense even more than on offense.  OSU did not have to face both Iriafen and Brink the last time we played them, and Beers could not control Iriafen at all.  One might think that putting both Brink and Iriafen on the floor would be just too much for OSU to handle, but Rueck has a superb defensive mind and has had weeks to figure out something different than what he tried last time.  It is always a great chess match with him.

Another great summary. Thanks 81

RE: WBB: Stanford at Oregon State Thursday 7pm - WBB fan - 02-26-2024

Great summary 81. Thanks. This will be a game to show what we can do, that the 1st game wasn't just Kiki having a once in a lifetime monster game. Like OSU, we may be missing a key piece, for us, Talana, but Harriel showed us yesterday that she's a threat of her own. We'll be there, trying to outscream the Beaves as best we can. Go Card!

RE: WBB: Stanford at Oregon State Thursday 7pm - M T - 02-26-2024

At the ASU halftime, three sets of Cardboarders indicated they were heading up to Oregon.  I believe at least one other has indicated the intent to be at the game.  Cheer the team on for us!     You all might want to meet at halftime for a quick meet-up and discuss the game.  We enjoy that at Maples.

RE: WBB: Stanford at Oregon State Thursday 7pm - CompSci87 - 02-26-2024

If you have Comcast/Xfinity in the Bay Area, you'll have to watch the game online, as it's only on Pac-12 Oregon. Pac-12 Bay Area has WBB Cal at Oregon, while the main Pac-12 channel has MBB.

Thanks for the warning!  I guess the move during the last week of the season to the Thursday--Saturday schedule created some scheduling challenges.  I think that had something to do with giving a little more time before the Pac 12 tournament, but what a sad state of affairs when one of the most important games in Pac 12 WBB this season isn't going to be on any kind of television outside of Oregon.

Thanks once again for providing the in-depth analysis. I have one question, though. You made no reference to TVO (aka Talia von Oelhoffen) in your game analysis. After her heroics against UCla, she might be difficult to overlook! Her stat line isn’t that impressive 10 ppg, 5.3 reb, 38.7 fg%, but her 5 ast along with her ability to score 20+ might be a factor in spite of her being held to two points yesterday with limited minutes.

No, I didn't.  I covered her in the initial Oregon State review.  That said, she had a dreadful game in their loss to Washington, but I am sure she will be refocused and better on Thursday night.  Against Washington she had 1 assist and 2 points on 1/6 shooting.  The previous weekend, at home, she had 10 assists against USC and 22 points against UCLA.  Her three point shooting is very streaky.  She is .327 overall but the last 5 games have been 3/4, 4/7, 1/6, 1/3, 0/3.  Last time she played us she was 0/1 from three.  In any case, we seem to know how to defend her.

Great idea for an OSU meet-up. We could do it in the main lobby, at the entrance doors, just to have a place that all can find. If others agree, I'll be there.

I suspect TVO's minutes were limited in OSU's recent game due to the same injury that plagued her one year ago when she had to cut back her playing time on the court. This is the time of year in which the injury bug tends to catch up on many players. Let’s hope that all players in the forthcoming games, including Talia and Talana, get to finish out the season in spite of their injuries!

I've often thought that a good model for Lepolo, given size and athletic ability, would be TVO.  But it seems as if both of them have put wear and tear on their bodies.  I'd love to see them both healthy and playing at full speed tonight.

RE: WBB: Stanford at Oregon State Thursday 7pm - triangle2 - 02-29-2024

The OSU board doesn’t seem to think that Beers is playing tonight. Some suggestion that she’s having post-concussion symptoms. If so, that’s not good (for her).

If I could subtract an injury from my own history, I’d get rid of the bad concussion first.

TVO is 5'11". Lepolo is 5"7". I think that Lepolo's size limits what she can do especially against bigger guards. Even Harriel is 3 inches taller.

Am at OSU and does appear no Beers.

Wow, I really thought TVO was shorter than that.  Something about the frame or how she moves I guess.  But that is a significant difference.
