Standardized testing in college admissions - dabigv13 - 04-11-2024

Harvard today joins Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and MIT in again requiring SAT or ACT scores.

I'm guessing Stanford will be following soon. Hard to see UC reinstating in the near term though.

To me, it should be needed. Back in the day, 3 SAT IIs (Math 2C, Writing, Physics) were required as well for the schools i applied to.

UT-Austin announced last month that they will be required, for the purposes of program placement.

Purdue reinstated them as well. North Carolina is considering it. University of Tennessee brought it back.

University of California and CalTech have indicated interest in establishing an alternative system to the standardized tests and do not intend to reinstate the tests. The LA Times called on the UC system to reconsider their position. Interestingly, UC rejected standardized tests but decided to retain essays in spite of the fact that a Stanford study indicated that essays are closely correlated to family income.

Efforts to improve DEI are fraught with the same problems as other fields.  For example, environmentalism led us to change out landscapes for turf on the premise that turf doesn't use water, but then we realized that turf doesn't allow infiltration of rainwater, leading more rainwater to collect pollutants on its way to being diverted to the ocean.  That's not to say that efforts at improving DEI or efforts to improve the environment are worthless.  Just saying that I agree with the point in the post above that we need to be aware of the downsides to any replacement policy Stanford puts in place to evaluate the merits of kids' applications.

Anybody know what percent of Stanford applicants submit SAT scores? I would think Stanford would get them from a big majority.

in the 2022-23 common data set it says 47% submitted SAT scores and 22% ACT scores (it is not clear how they would count someone who took both)

https://ucomm.stanford.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2024/02/stanford-cds-2023_2024_final_v1.pdf

the report also gives breakdowns by test score ranges (e.g., 96% had SAT composite scores of 1400-1600, 4% 1200-1399)

ACT!!.....ACT!!.....ACT!!

(I wonder if we'll ever hear the "ACC chant in Maples?)

Point of parliamentary procedure:  Turf done right allows for infiltration.  I'm using it in front of our house surrounding two oak trees. The turf is laid on sand over clay and I've never observed runoff from the turf area.  Dogs love it though.  Getting a little tired of scraping petrified dog**** off the rug, although I've fooled several neighbors into thinking it's real and I'm that good with a hand mower.

There it is. Good move IMHO.

Quote:Stanford will resume requiring either the SAT or the ACT for undergraduate admission, beginning with students applying in fall 2025 for admission to the Class of 2030. Stanford will remain test-optional for students applying in fall 2024 for admission to the Class of 2029.

Totally agree it is a good move. Stanford admissions can use the results of standardized tests as they see fit. It is another data point that has some useful properties.
