football season ticket renewals - 82lsju - 05-06-2024

for those who are football season ticket buyers what's your plan for the coming season?

Within our group we're seeing about a 73% renewal rate, these are all long-time season ticket holders, most since the early 1980s.

We've had attrition in the past but never this large of single year drop.

I didn't renew.

I'm a bit of a fair-weather fan for football, really. I first got season tickets in the Andrew Luck era after having very rarely gone to games before that. I realized seeing Luck play in college was likely to be a memorable and not to be equaled experience. Then I kept the tickets for a few years because the team was still winning and still exciting to watch.

Last season I still had a season ticket, after more or less forgetting to cancel, but I didn't go to any games despite living within walking distance of the stadium. I did watch parts of several on TV.

So it's mostly poor performance for me. Also knowing I can buy single tickets easily if I feel like going.

I realize it is a bit odd, but I held season tickets from 1985 until the last year before Andrew Luck started. By then I was missing so many games due to high school sport parenting, that it seemed to be a waste of money and I couldn't give tickets away.  Also, even during the height of Stanford's Luck-Hogan era greatness, tickets were always easy to come by. With less than a week's notice, I was able to find six good seats on the Stanford website for the 2013 Big Game (a 63 to whatever demolition securing a Rose Bowl berth) for me, my reluctant Calfan wife, and four USNA Midshipmen who decided at the last minute to fly out to California and stay at our house for the Navy-SJSU game the night before.

I have to imagine tickets are even easier to get now.

I have not missed a single home game (nor have I left early once) since moving back to the area in late 2014. I have 2 season tickets, will renew, and will be trying to get a third (for an alum friend in Austin who wants to come to the games) if there's an available stay next to my current tickets.

After about 50 years as a STH, I finally bailed last year, for all of the reasons 82lsju cited.  

We moved to San Diego in 1987 and I still kept my tickets, even though for a 10-yr period in the 90s we actually lived in Asia and I came home once every fall to go to a game.  The rest of the season, selling the ND/$C/Oregon tix easily covered my costs.

Daughter lived in the East Bay from 2006-2018 and that provided a good excuse to come up for games.

And I have good friends who still regularly tailgate in Lot 2.

I think what killed it for me was the TV-driven schedule, especially night games that required at least one overnight stay.  If our home games were all at 12:30 pm, I'd probably still be up there on the sunny side.

And as bad as the Pac-12 network coverage was, it still gave me an "out."

Following my time as a student here, I've had full season tickets for around 40 years.  Am happy to have seen four Rose Bowls, and many games in both new & old Stanford Stadium (including one Super Bowl in the old one, though it wasn't technically a Stanford event).

The size of our ticket group has waxed and waned over time, mostly as people moved in/out of the area.  At this point there are only a couple of us left.

I plan to renew for another year; checking with the other guy right now.

In terms of on-field performance, I'm relatively optimistic.  Troy T. seems to be doing some good things.

With regards to off-field issues, things are less settled.  The combination of NIL/transfer portal, and the meltdown of the Pac-12, means that much is uncertain.  So it goes.

In the meantime, I'm still coming out on Saturdays to cheer the team on.

Still renewing.  Good way to spend a few hours with friends a few time a year.  But with not as much gusto as before based on performance and conference.

I’ve had tix off an on (mostly on) since I was an undergrad—and every year for the last 25+. Definitely renewing mine. Used to have four, but as my kids grew up and my wife lost interest in everything but Big Game, I dropped from four to two. Often go solo, as my friend and acquaintance group isn’t especially enthused about Stanford Foorball. Would love to find a beery tailgate crew like I had back in the day, but those days may be over or good…

Wife and I had season tix from 1973 (Sec. E) until 2006 when we moved to the shady side of the new stadium (Sec. 214) along a dozen or so of our long-time sunny side compatriots. When Bernie began his annual fleecing maneuvers during the post-Harbaugh heyday--while the quality of football declined--we abandoned our 45-yd-line seats to buy into the north end zone. The last straw was the unwatchable 2019 season. We'd had enough. By then we'd moved to Sacramento (from Los Altos) and haven't looked back. We remain CardinalManiacs but the "mania" just isn't the same for us.

I'm going to re-new, although I initially was going to pass.  If it weren't for son and his family living in San Jose, I definitely would have passed.  20 years ago the jump from Portland to SJC was a cheap ticket.  Today, for a few dollars more, I can hop on down to Puerto Vallarta.  The beer is colder, the margaritas are stronger and everything is about half the price of the Bay Area.  

A weekend trip is almost as much as season tix with parking. Toss in Friday night games, a schedule that is just not that appealing and a crazy Saturday game time schedule, its tough to get excited about Stanford Football.

My family had season tickets since the stadium was built. The prior stadium, where my great grandfather had 25 tickets between the 40s. His son and daughter in law (Stanf '42 and '41) had a dozen season tickets up through 2008. My father in law had four tickets ever since he was an aeronautical engineering student (late 1950s), then he had two, gave them up two years ago. I had season tickets, then had to give them up for a variety of kid-related purposes, and it was never difficult to buy game day tickets...which is where I stand today. I'll attend three games this year.

I had planned to cancel my season tickets but then we had the coaching change and I felt obligated to support the program for doing the right thing.

I think I attended two games total in the past two seasons.  I can't even remember.  But I'll pledge to get to at least half the games this season.
