Football's first post-baccalaureate transfer? -
needle - 05-10-2024
The Twitter account @channeltree claims that Clay Patterson, a Yale graduate who plays on the defensive line, has transferred to become Stanford football's first post-baccalaureate student in program history. I'm definitely not an expert in grad school, but apparently this means that Patterson will be taking classes but not (as of enrollment) pursuing a graduate degree, at least not at Stanford.

If true, I can guess that some posters here might absolutely forswear Stanford football. I hope not!
Personally, I respect that Stanford football is getting creative with grad transfer admissions as the football team just isn't nearly talented enough on defense. Moves like this don't cheapen the academics for anyone, imo, and it's easy enough for me to imagine that the student will take academics seriously as a post-baccalaureate student to improve his chances of landing at a preferred grad school down the line.
But I also wish I could believe that Stanford as an institution is consciously developing a roadmap for how to navigate the modern college athletics landscape; instead, it kind of feels like Stanford is just trying out various ideas rather than doing the soul searching necessary to decide what direction the majority of students, faculty and alums really want for Stanford's intercollegiate athletics.

Huh, I didn't know a non-degree student could be on a sports team. Interesting route. I wonder what admission to such a program at Stanford is like.

I wonder if other grad transfers can go this route. I'm guessing most don't actually get a degree at other schools.

Many schools have “certificate” programs for post-grads. Those are popular with football transfers.

Stanford used to offer an MA in Liberal Studies (or something like that). I knew someone who went through that program. It was like Harvard’s Extension program, similar to adult education. Nevertheless my friend was very proud of that degree. No idea whether any grad transfers are in that or a similar program.

I <think> a transfer into WBB got an MLA 2-3 years ago

This is the athlete I was thinking of. Bobk or anyone else, please chime in if I'm misremembering or misunderstanding her enrollment &/or the circumstances around her pursuit/awarding of an advanced degree.

in some casual googling the only post baccalaureate programs I could find at Stanford are connected to
1. the Med School
https://med.stanford.edu/reach/components/postbaccalaureate.html
2. ChEM-H
https://chemh.stanford.edu/training-education/postbac-program-target-discovery/information-prospective-postbacs
3. Astrophysics and Cosmology
https://kipac.stanford.edu/join-or-visit-us/kipac-post-baccalaureate-fellowship
which mostly seem to be 1-2 year programs to bolster your resume for med school or pursuing a PhD.

Not to be an apologist for an administration caught flat-footed and dazed by recent changes, but it seems like all aspects of the new reality are - and will continue to be - in such flux it'd be unwise to make too many bold moves.

The post bacc program is something reserved athletes so they can be taking classes and maintain eligibility but it is a joke...most stop going to classes after the season is over and there is no pretense about getting a degree. Cal does this regularly so it would be no surprise if Stanford does, or will, also. Of course, I wouldn't expect to find it easily on any public website at Stanford.
