MVB wrap up - Mick - 05-10-2024
Stanford swept #9 Pepperdine (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) in the first round of the MPSF men's volleyball tournament, held at the Galen Center at USC. Really solid play all around, just 29 total errors. Will Rottman, Ethan Hill, Theo Snoey, Lietzke all looked great. Stanford basically kept improving through the year, they lost in their first meeting to Pepperdine in four sets, then beat Pepperdine in four sets, then a neutral court sweep over the #9 team who finished 17-11.
And then Stanford ran into Grand Canyon. GCU won 3-1, crushing Stanford in the first game (25-15) and the last game (25-17). Middle two were competitive overtime games; a 26-24 Stanford win, and a 27-25 GCU win. Grand Canyon went on to beat UCLA in five games for the MPSF tournament championship. GCU finished 24-4, very well coached team.
Eight teams made the NCAA men's championship, and all four Western teams swept the non-Western teams by a 3-0 match score; UCLA beat Fort Valley State, UC Irvine beat Penn State, Grand Canyon beat Ohio State and Long Beach State beat Belmont Abbey. In the semis, Long Beach State beat Grand Canyon in five, and UC Irvine beat UCLA in five. UCLA beat Long Beach State in four to win their 21st championship. They won last year as well, concluding a drought lasting back to 2006. It was John Speraw's second consecutive NCAA championship; he's won five total, three with UC Irvine.

USA has a pretty good chance...they're the second-ranked team in the world.

The three who hail from Hawaii all went to Punahou. So they’re pretty stoked.

There was at least one year a while ago when Stanford had more players from Hawaii than UH did. Kawika, Erik, Spencer McGlaughlin, who else I don’t remember.

Their 2011 team had eight players from Hawaii, including all three liberos Erik Shoji (on the current Paris Olympic team), Scott Sakaida and Jordan Inafuku, and a trio of 6'7" players including OH Spencer McLachlin, MB Max Halvorson, and OH Brad Lawson, along with setter Chandler Kaaa.
Shoji, McLachlin, and Halvorson went to Punahou.
Sakaida and Lawson went to Iolani
Kaaa went to Kamehameha-Hawai'i.
Inafuku went to Kamehameha-O'ahu.
No one on this year's team is from Hawai'i. I may be wrong, but I don't think they've had a Hawaiian player since Evan Enriques in 2018.
