Calimony - 82lsju - 05-15-2024

Quote:UCLA could pay the University of California at Berkeley $10 million a year for three years instead of six as a result of the Bruins' upcoming move to the Big Ten and the demise of the Pac-12.
...
The matter -- nicknamed "Calimony" by UCLA and Cal supporters -- will come up for a vote by the full Board of Regents on Thursday.

Over the next three years, there will be very significant changes to college athletics.  Cal was fortunate to have the Regents committee recommend a shorter time frame before looking at the deal again.  Quite frankly, I think the $50 million gap between the Berkeley and Los Angeles schools will be much greater in 2027 thus leading to a higher payout from the Bruins to the Bears.

RE: Calimony - dabigv13 - 05-15-2024

Wilner sold this as a win for UCLA because the payout was reduced from 6 to 3 years with years beyond 3 now not guaranteed. I'm not sure that payments above 10mil were ever an option anyway.

All that being said, since California taxpayers are ultimately the main funders of both schools, not sure how much any of this matters.

California taxpayers fund less than 20% of the total UC budget.

Wilner, as usual, is wrong.  With the ACC’s contract with ESPN set to expire in three years, the ongoing litigation between the conference and Clemson/Florida St. and the pending settlement in the House case, who knows what things will look like in 2028.  I think a shorter term with a guarantee to revisit is a much better deal for Cal.

In other Pac-12 news, all 13 home football games will be televised nationally on Fox (two games) and CW Network (11 games, same network as Pac-12 football and LIV golf) in 2024. Most games will have set starting times before the season, and CW is expected to announce the schedule today. Most kickoffs appear to be 12:30 or 3:30, except SJSU vs. WSU at 7 p.m. on a Friday.

I thought the Pac-12 Conference was dead after this year.  Should we now be calling it the Pac-One-Two...?

They have a two year grace period to begin to re-establish the Pac-12. They need a minimum of six teams. In February, The Athletic reported that the plan was to consummate a reverse merger with the 12 Mountain West Conference schools to create a Pac-14. The MWC can vote to dissolve with nine of 12 teams voting without any kill fees. I've also heard that they might poach the best of the MWC and the AAC (All American Conference).

Not remotely the same thing, but Stanford is going to make 6x+ what Cal makes from Electronic Arts rebooting their new football video game. Has to do with their collective success levels between 2014 and 2024.

Bay Area university to considerably out-earn rival from new video game

I saw that headline and thought, wow, that’s a significant difference. Then I read the article only to learn the difference was $50,000.  Talk about a misleading headline.  $50K - wow, that might cause Cal to join Clemson and Florida St. in their effort to receive equitable payouts.
