Love the schedule.
I suspect this hints at something we will see in a few other sports.
In the past a few sports had lots of non-conference east coast travel, presumably in an effort to improve their strength of schedule.   Then they played their Pac-12, with most games 2 or 3 flight hours or less from home.

Now, I think we will see teams playing as many quality or decent western USA teams as possible in the non-conference portion and then travel to ACC venues for conference games.

I can only imagine this could mean Stanford teams will play UCI, UCD, CSUF and SDSU more often than before, while rarely playing against BigTen and SEC teams.

Anson Dorrance must be excited and thrilled to play Stanford at Stanford. haha

I could offer him a place to stay; features broken plumbing, no heat or A/C, and a train runs nearby every 2 hours with a mandatory horn blowing.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-31-2024

Stanford gets UC Irvine (defeated top 4 seed UCLA in the NCAA tournament last year), perennial local power Santa Clara, and former conference foes and recent Final Four teams Washington State and USC. And that's just non-conference.

In the ACC, Stanford misses defending national champ Florida State and Clemson (both top 4 national seeds last year) but gets UNC and Notre Dame. Add in Pitt (NCAA qualifier eliminated by Florida State) and Wake Forest (undefeated at home last year).

This looks like a typical challenging schedule with cross-country road trips exchanged for road trips at altitude in SLC and Boulder.

Notice that Stanford does not even leave the state of California for non-conference matches.

Presumably last occupied by Your Cousin Vinnie...

If you look at the 2021 schedule:
- Stanford had 1 trip to North Carolina (before school started, same as scheduled for this fall)
- a road trip to the Washington schools (compared to a trip to Louisville and a stop in Chicago/South Bend on the way back)
- a road trip to Boulder (compared to a trip to Dallas to play SMU)

Doesn't look unreasonably more difficult than in the past (just more time zones).  The big difference will be that the ACC has a conference tournament, while the Pac 12 didn't.  That will be up to 3 games.  The first game, if they have one, could either be home or away.  The semi-final and the championship games are always in North Carolina.  Depending on how Stanford plays, the tournament could involve anywhere from 0 additional trips up to 2.

5 Stanford players in Emma Hayes’ first starting 11 for USWNT: Campbell, Girma, Davidson, Macario and Smith

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Leftcoast - 06-01-2024

Has anyone seen Macario play since returning from her injury?  Did she lose much?

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 08-12-2024

Stanford played an exhibition vs. San Jose St last Friday and won 4-0.

https://gostanford.com/news/2024/08/9/cardinal-shines-in-exhibition

The season kicks off this Friday vs. USF. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.

In other news, Elise Evans has been named to the roster which will play at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia from August 31 through September 22. The US plays group games on Sept 1, 4 and 7 with Round of 16 on Sept 11 or 12 depending on how well they do. I think this knocks her out for most if not all of Stanford's non-conference matches. Cal, Florida State, UNC, Notre Dame, and Virginia also have players on the U-20 roster.

And finally, Stanford is ranked #2 in the country pre-season behind conference rival and defending NC Florida State. Clemson, Pitt and UNC are also in the top 10.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - oldalum - 08-12-2024

Only one home game in August (next Sunday at 1 pm), but an interesting one: in the NCAA Tournament the last 3 years, the UC Irvine Anteaters upset UCLA in the first round in 2021, upset USC in the first round in 2022, and monumentally upset #1-seed UCLA in the first round last year, scoring in the 87th minute while playing with only 10 players the last 15 minutes of the game. They are 1 of 7 teams to make it to the sweet sixteen each of the past two years (we're not one of 'em!).

I don’t know how I feel about Aikey playing CB.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - fullmetal - 08-15-2024

The SID write-up notes that Aikey moved to center forward for the last 20 min of the game.

I saw bits and pieces of the ESPN+ broadcast; I missed the goal, and I don't think it was replayed, much to my chagrin.  USF was aggressive on defense but equally likely to turn the ball over, in my uninformed opinion.  I'll have to carve out time for these ESPN+ broadcasts!

The Twitter account has the goal replay:
