Stanford Baseball 2024-25 - BobK - 06-27-2024

The Draft is set for July 14-16. Malcolm Moore will be a first rounder. Nati could be drafted.
Matt Scott was just projected as a late first round pick by Baseball America in 2025

The Portal is open maybe Stanford gets some solid help.

Dang, 2 of our best sophomores old enough to get drafted. A depleted team gets even more depleted.

Matt Scott is draft eligible in 2025.

For the draft ...

There seems to be a considerable range of opinion on Moore. That's a little surprising for a college player, but it does come after only two seasons - one of which was really rather less than expected. I have seen him projected from mid-first round to third round, though mostly late first.

I haven't seen Nati listed on any draft projection at all. Such publicly available lists aren't that great for the later rounds, but it does mean that if Nati does get drafted it's unlikely to be very early.

The key to watch for Stanford fans is (hopefully) incoming frosh and Paly grad Charlie Bates. I have seen him ranked from around 50 to 150, but not sure if that factors in signability or not. Obviously, Stanford fans would like him to not sign regardless of where he gets drafted - even better if he just scares off teams telling them he's attending Stanford.

Baseball America has Moore at 28
Bates at 73 which to me means sign ability. Glowing report on him
On the first 200 that’s it on Stanford players/ commits

Quinn Mathews is pitching right now in the Futures game. This year, he is pitching at AA Springfield for St. Louis.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2024-25 - chrisk - 07-14-2024

Montgomery is 1 of 6 prospects attending the MLB draft in person today.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2024-25 - JJJ - 07-14-2024

I just might tune in for a bit. Nati’s Aussie buddy Bazzana (OSU) might go in the top 3. Hopefully Nati gets a call too.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2024-25 - JJJ - 07-14-2024

Montgomery was interviewed by the hosts which included Kyle Petersen. Then Jessica Mendoza came on. I thought Stanford would be mentioned more but that was hardly the case…

Bazzana goes #1 overall.

Bazzana is 2nd #1 overall pick for OSU in 5 years (Rutschman by Baltimore). Bazzana joins Guardians organization which picked Kwan from OSU in the 5th round in 2018. Kwan is currently leading MLB for average and is showing some power this year.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2024-25 - CTcard - 07-15-2024

As far as I can see, after 10 rounds no sign of either Charlie Bates or Jimmy Nati being drafted.
10 more rounds to go.

Rangers fan here.  This is a good place for Moore to land.  The Rangers are fairly thin at catcher in the minors, and if Moore hits well, he could move up quickly.  That said, there's already speculation about moving him to 1B.

Here's what today's Merc said.  Good summary of Bay Area players chosen. Likely paywalled.

I didn't check the whole incoming class, but don't see anybody associated with Stanford got drafted other than Moore. A rather natural dip after the 9 that went last year.
Mostly not surprised, though was slightly worried some of the predraft talk about Bates might have indicated he had told people he might be interested in signing. Apparently just the opposite.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2024-25 - JJJ - 07-17-2024

Owen Cobb signed with the Yankees.

Really nice for a talented guy who worked hard and got much better.  I, for one, hope he continues to progress.

TrumpCard - TrumpCard - 07-28-2024

Random question:
I have read that pro baseball players, on average, have far better than 20/20 vision.
I have also read that people become more nearsighted by spending time reading (which is a pretty common habit for Stanford students).
Has Stanford baseball historically had players who make up for subpar visual acuity with other traits?
Have many Stanford baseball players gotten laser surgery to improve their vision?
Has there been a discussion of this issue on the board in the past?
Thanks, from a 20/400 fan (corrected by lasik to near normal).
