Oh no! I'm so sorry!!

RE: Women’s Soccer 2024 - BobK - 07-04-2024

In the HS class rankings for Stanford’s incoming class the top 7 went pro including 2 who had committed to Stanford

Of our incoming class Klinger was ranked # 8, Thomas # 11, Kohler # 17 and Emri # 20.

RE: Women’s Soccer 2024 - PVTree - 07-04-2024

What is our projected starting lineup?

I see Evans and Montoya starting. Who else should join them?

RE: Women’s Soccer 2024 - BobK - 07-04-2024

I no so miss Muiron and Viking Guy posting great info.

RE: Women’s Soccer 2024 - Sakibomb25 - 07-05-2024

Klinger was the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025, but she reclassified to the Class of 2024. Essentially Klinger is the No. 1 recruit of all those who did not turn pro.

I'll venture some uninformed thoughts, since no one actually knowledgeable has chimed in yet! The unknown is the incoming freshman class, I hope a few of them will be of future star quality and play right away. We lost three very important players from last year: a major star in Doms, our excellent GK Ryan Campbell, and Kennedy Wesley on defense. We have two returning star players (Aikey and Evans) and a host of experienced, good but not yet great players. GK is our most important unknown this year; backup Craig got little time last year and it showed with some shaky moments. We have to hope she will rise to the level of play we need, or one of the younger GKs will.

After Aikey (a midfielder/forward combo), we have two excellent forwards in Montoya and Kitahata, but also good forwards in Grillione and Williams, and two back-to-the-goal type forwards in Wolf and Kostmayer. Defense is led by Evans, and Harvey did a good job at holding mid last year. After them we have a lot of good, experienced but not necessarily standout defenders. Bhuta will continue to start in midfield and I thought Jung was good job in midfield last year, but there will be opportunities for the new freshman to break into the lineup in the midfield and in defense (and even forward if they're good enough). It should be a very strong team overall, assuming we get good GK play. The returning players really know how to play in our system, and the best new players will have a high learning curve in the pre-season and get more time as the season goes on. Last year we played a lot of younger players, and the improvement in our play from the first couple games to the end was the best I can remember, just stellar. (compliments to the coaches!).

I do not follow recruiting service stuff closely; so this is more about the team overall.

For me the key questions this year in order are:
1. Is GK, GK, GK. Campbell is a major loss and Craig was very shaky last year. I don’t know if Jota can challenge her as a Freshman, or if Savig steps up?
2. Who replaces Wesley at CB is almost as big a question. Wesley played essentially 100% of the time; so I don’t have any idea if anybody returning on the roster is an obvious replacement starter.  Can Murdock step in and start immediately?
3. Who replaces Doms? Doms is a significant loss as well, but there are a lot more known options here. Bhuta could go back to midfield from RB. Kitihata could drop back if forward becomes a real log jam. Or it is very possible Klinger starts quickly.
4. Does Jung continue to start as she did at the end of the year? For me she was OK, but somewhat overmatched physically. Maybe a year makes a big difference for her development or maybe she gets passed up.
5. Backup forwards are going to have a long fight for playing time with the new recruits. How does the pecking order shake out? None of the reserves were consistently effective last year and Ratcliffe tried everybody; so the Frosh are going to get chances to play. On a side note, I am somewhat surprised Lumi stayed. I think she is a good player, but a terrible fit for the system.

On the whole though, if GK is at least solid, they should be very good again this coming year.

Of course you both are far more knowledgeable than me. But neither of you answered PVTree's question, hence I stand by my first sentence!  :)

And I appreciate Hieronymus staying up so late (or getting up so early) to chime in!

Alright I will take a shot at the lineup opening day. Note that the starting lineup will almost certainly have changed by the 2/3 point of the season - too many good Frosh to not have some in season changes.

Kitahata - Aikey - Montoya
Klinger - Harvey - Jung/Bhuta
Brandt - Murdock - Evans - Bhuta/Emri
                 Craig

7 of those players are locks barring injury, but Bhuta could go back to MF or stay at RB. If she does move to MF, I would peg Emri as the likely RB. Jung could get bypassed during the season though I doubt it on opening day. Klinger and Murdock are reasonable guesses, and Craig is almost a given to be the day 1 GK.

Last year 2 Frosh started early and a third was starting by the end of the year.  I have 2 on the opening day lineup. That might be a little aggressive this year with only 3.5 spots “open.” We will see.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see 3 Frosh by the 2/3 point of the season again this year though.

I didn't really answer the question fully, either, so glad you did!

I'd be very happy to see 3 frosh starting then or before. Apart from our standouts and excellent players, we have some decent-to-good experienced players but, assuming they don't make a big leap forward this year, I'm hoping some of the frosh will be "difference makers."

I remember when Aikey played in the first game of her freshman year, I watched her for literally 1 minute, looked up her name on the roster, mispronounced it (Aikey, not Jasmine!) to my wife, and said, "I can tell already she's going to be really good." Which was a fortuitous comment, since her father happened to be sitting next to us and introduced himself! I'm hoping for a similar reaction this year to some of the new players. And that I remember my seating section includes families of players! :)

Personally I think Stanford plays a lot better with Aikey at the midfield, and the roster currently shows her only as a midfielder. So I think we will see her start there more often then not unless our forwards struggle.

So who replaces her at forward?  It may be Kitihata in the middle and 5th year Samantha Williams at the wing.  Williams struggled with some injury issues last year but if she's healthy she definitely gives us starter level speed/talent on the wing.

Of course Erika Grilione, Amalie Panam and Lumi Kostmayer are older and stronger.  Any of them could end up a starter up top.  Then of course there is freshman Jaden Thomas (a top 10 overall recruit) and fellow frosh Charlotte Kohler (a California Gatorade Player of the Year recipient), who both are exceptional talents up top and could surprise us.  I like our deep forward talent and we shouldn't need Aikey to play up there.

And I'm 90% certain that Buta will be starting at midfield.  She's a much better midfielder than defender. (Her lack of defensive experience lead to some unfortunate miscues in the national championship game.)  I reserve 10% because midfielder Eleanor Klinger was the top overall recruit before she reclassified to 2024.  But with Eleanor being especially young this year and Aikey, Harvey and Buta all so strong, I don't see her cracking the starting lineup, at least not for a while.

I agree a starting back line of Brandt - Murdock - Evans - Emri is likely.

I am not sure how much to make out of a positional listing for Aikey. The problem is Stanford almost always claims to line up with a 442 with Aikey at MF when it’s really a 433 with Aikey at CF. Typically though last year then she would shift to MF for about 15 minutes each half; so F/MF was an accurate description.

Overall, though I guess I had a different view. The other Forwards are all tricky, shifty types but without a lot of speed except for Williams who got hurt. Against better teams i think they get too compact and have no threat to open things up when Aikey is in the MF. Also neither Lumi nor Wolf were very effective last year; so CF was a bit of a lost cause when Aikey shifted to MF.

The wildcard is 5 Frosh in the top 20. I expect several to make an impact obviously per my starting 11, but we are just guessing as to which players step up quickly. And who emerges will impact where the more flexible players like Bhuta and Aikey end up playing. Ratcliffe has shown he has no fears about going with his best 11 even if that means some positional adjustments along the way or playing Frosh. I expect the same this year.
