tl;dr -- Pervasive culture of gambling on their own team's performances, coaches didn't know about it, and the entire team has the ability to transfer right now if they want.

I hope to know this is more than, "The losers buy the winner a steak dinner" or other motivational bets. The coverage does not mention the amounts involved.

I wonder how pervasive gambling is on college campuses.
I worked in Detroit between 2014 and 2018 when Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken/Rocket Loans was locally prominent. By the time I left Detroit, he had purchased his 100th building downtown. He owns Cleveland sports franchises, and is an owner of at least four casinos. Gilbert is worth $18 bils. according to his Wikipedia page.

What's not on his Wikipedia page is that he was a bookie as a 19-year-old undergraduate at Michigan State. He was found guilty, along with three other undergrads, for running a gambling ring with at least $114k in bets. This is in 1981, about 300%+ inflation ago. He did no jail time, was fined, did community service and was given probation. The case was expunged, so Gilbert does not have a criminal record.

A police officer, who posed as the father of a son who was caught up in the gambling and allegedly threatened by Gilbert and his associates, says the gambling was far larger than Gilbert acknowledges.

Gambling is a lucrative business. With the explosion of sports betting, I wonder how many undergraduates are ruining their lives through gambling addiction.

"We look at the general introduction of sports gambling and separately the introduction of online access, which is mostly these mobile apps like DraftKings and FanDuel," said Brett Hollenbeck, an associate marketing professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management and one of the paper's authors. "Where we find the big effects is when the online mobile access goes in."
