Conference realignment news -
Giants - 09-11-2024
It is being reported that Colorado State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Boise State will be leaving the MWC in 2026 to join OSU and WSU as members of the new Pac-12. In addition to those four, the Pac-12 will need to add two more schools by 2026 to earn status as an official conference.

Saw that. It's going to be expensive.
What are the next two teams that join the new Pac-8? I think they'll only be able to afford the six additional teams, but who knows? Boise State (#30) is the top ranked MWC team this year -- UNLV (#61) and San Jose State (#79) are next, followed closely by Fresno State. UNLV and SJSU would make sense. It's a big dropoff to 1-2 Nevada (#98), and then an even bigger dropoff to Airforce, Hawaii and New Mexico...although SDSU and CSU are in that cohort. Those five are currently ranked #112 - #117.

Quote:The Pac-12 Conference Board of Directors voted unanimously to admit Boise State University, Colorado State University, California State University, Fresno, and San Diego State University, four respected institutions celebrated for their achievements in both academics and athletics, to the Pac-12 Conference effective July 1, 2026. Competition will begin for all conference sports in the 2026-27 academic year.

It's pretty shortsighted to make the number of teams in a conference part of the name. I wonder if the Pac-12 is contemplating a name change.
This type of mistake is not isolated to athletic conferences. Motel 6 originally charged $6 per night. The founders of Super 8 didn't learn the lesson. When 7-Eleven opened for business it was unusual to open so early and stay open so late. Now they are 24-Seven. Has anyone gone into a Dollar Store lately and expected everything to be priced at $1?

I read this just before heading out to pick up a few items at the local Woolworth’s Five and Dime. It made no sense to me whatsoever…..

Well, Motel 6 and 7-11 are still well recognized brands even though the numbers don't make any sense now. I think the lesson is not to keep changing it.
Of course there being both a Big 10 and Big 12 sort of naturally limits those conferences from making a change, otherwise I bet one of them would have changed like the Pac did, stupidly.

The next targets are AAC schools, most likely Memphis and Tulane although UTSA and North Texas have been mentioned as well. It is unlikely to be more MWC schools. If there was any interest in the others, they would have been invited with the four that were.

Also, geographical names should be descriptive. Why would the Atlantic Coast Conference include schools outside of the Atlantic Coast?

Anyone else feeling a twinge of regret?
If we could have convinced Cal to stay with us, we'd have an 8 team conference that is geographically friendly. It would also be composed entirely of schools with a history of being sneaky good at football. There would be no juggernauts, but all 8 schools historically have been at or around mid power-5 level or better for the last few decades.
I can't say what the money would be. I'm sure it would be less then the ACC, though the penalties we took to leave the PAC and join the ACC may mitigate that somewhat.
If the ACC collapses in the next round when FSU and clemson bolt pending their litigation, I wouldn't be shocked if we came back hat in hand.

I see your point about football.
But for almost every other sport, No.

The core problem is “who cares?” You won’t get top caliber athletes to go to the schools in this conference …absent an obscene amount of NIL. I guess that’s not impossible, now that I think about it. All in all, my reaction is “ wow, if we hadn’t cut a deal with the ACC, that would be our future. “. Pretty dismal.

Absolutely, no regrets. The difference between the reconstituted P12 and the ACC is as wide as the distance between Palo Alto and Tallahassee. There is no comparison between the overall athletic programs offered by the two conferences. The ACC dwarfs the P12. Also, I prefer to participate in a conference with nationally known schools than one with a bunch of local brands.

Yes, I was in favor of the local option. I had visions of fun travel to Hawaii, San Diego and Las Vegas and short trips to San Jose. So I went on and on,
ad infinitum, ad nauseum about it. Posters generally responded that it would ruin Stanford not to have a Power 5 anchor. I think it's too far to go, but the ACC
is a weaker conference than the Pac-12, so Stanford should do better. And the basketball is much better. I'd
much rather see Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Louisville, Wake Forest, BC, Miami, etc.
RE: Pac-12 Expansion -

I think it's a good thing this happened for Stanford athletics.
The ACC is clearly a better conference now. But if the ACC does get busted up in the next year or two, which is very plausible, a reconstituted Pac is probably our best landing spot. If OSU and WSU had been absorbed by the MWC that would have been somewhat worse of an outcome if we eventually had to join.

Agree. Further, I can see scenarios where some kind of "athletic amnesty" has to prevail for all involved. Nobody knows what the future may bring, but it may be that many former PAC-12 schools will "need" to end up in the same geographic conference. They will all have to get along.

I don’t want to be in a conference with Boise. I just don’t. I don’t want to return to the Pac.
RE: Pac-12 Expansion -

I'd rather be in a smaller conference with full round-robin scheduling, that feeds the national playoff. The reconstituted Pac should have that with at least G5/6/whatever status and they should litigate their way back to P5, so I'd prefer to be in a West Coast conference with Cal. (Cal was going wherever Stanford dragged it.)
It will be interesting to see if Stanford regrets taking a brobdingnagian pay cut to join the ACC. But good to know Kentucky is in conference now. Not too hard to beat in football and sort of overrated in hoops.
Notre Dame also needs to get off their independent football ass and go full-in on the ACC. I'm sure they have a special playoff carve out, but it's BS.

If the Pac-12 is alive again, does this mean USC can stop its search for the real killer?
