Men’s Soccer vs Notre Dame - Mudhead - 09-14-2024

Men hang on for a gritty win.  Lots of fouls. Seems like every player in Stanford team, including goalie, played with a yellow card. And we played a man short for 43 minutes of the second half.  1-0 on a goal by Kill.   No scoring in second half as Stanford played defense.. and played it very well

That was a defensive performance. Lots of yellow card. Stanford was able to reorganize and disciplined soccer after a stern talking from coach Gunn. So far, Stanford has beaten last year’s champion (Clemson) and finalist (ND).

Last year’s team was talented and was often fun to watch but had several problems.

1. Ball movement that some games didn’t generate chances.
2. A propensity to fall behind early caused by:
3a. A defense that would lose focus on high balls and sometimes on the break
3b. Shakey goalkeeping

This years team is clearly much improved except I still don’t have a lot of confidence in the goalkeeping. Up to #3 right now in the polls and yes big wins so far on the road v. #2 Clemson and top. 25 notre dame.

Today’s game though was rough watching. The first 5 cards were on Stanford and 6 total out of 9 in a game that would have been one of the least physical PAC games last year. Also that is 6 cards on 9 fouls. Absolute officiating insanity. I will just say  college soccer officiating is an abomination at a level where I am not sure if it’s a sport or a WWE match in disguise.
