Men’s soccer - Spike - 09-30-2024

Our men’s soccer team is ranked #2 and is really good. Won a tough one vs. Virginia.
I need help analyzing the team and its prospects.

RE: Men’s soccer - Hieronymus - 10-12-2024

The men finished with what had to be a frustrating 2:2 tie on the road vs. #15 SMU. They completely dominated this game, yet finished tied. Adnon scored though it really looked like an own goal off a slick FK play.  Goal 2 from Kiil. No Bohane in this one - injury but he was on the bench.

SMUs first goal is hard to explain. SMU hit a free kick that was supposed to be a cross on goal accidentally. Schebly stared at it. And stared. And stared as it went in the goal. Never moved. That is at least his third major gaffe for a goal this year in only 12 games. This is a very good team with one very clear weak link.

Goal 2 came off the back of the head of I believe one of the Banks twins on a SMU corner . Perfectly placed under the crossbar. One of those days I guess.

Hieronymus - Hieronymus - 11-01-2024

Kal Stanford 0:0 late. The official is pathetic excuse who should never ref a u6 game. Amazing nobody is seriously hurt. Piles off bodies down on the field at times.

But hey moron you stop the game for head injuries. And that is twice now incredibly. My god the men’s reffing is a disgrace

——-

Now Kal 1:0 . Stanford had looked defeated by the physicality and the clueless official for the last 10 minutes or so. Looks like they are playing to not get hurt, but this isn’t a soccer game so not sure I blame them.

Ends 1:0

The men have collapsed end of the year.  3 losses and 2 ties to close the regular season. Looks like last year and I thought they had gotten past that.

Pretty terrible week for Stanford sports.

I fear the travel is starting to catch up with a lot of the athletes.   It probably was not too bad in August and early September before the quarter started.  Now in the middle of a Stanford quarter the combination of the academic workload, the athletic demands AND the significant air travel might be a bit much.

You could be right.

First 10 games through Sept 27: 8-1-1
Last 6: 0-3-3
Until their last “game” they had still mostly been playing well in many ways, but the attention to detail just vanished. Poor finishing. Sloppy moments on defense. Fatigue could well be a major cause. The one counter to that; however, is they have mostly been home over that stretch - just a trip to Dallas. Everything else has been in the Bay Area.

Seeding like the Women will be interesting depending on the ACC tournament with a massive RPI vs (un)ranking disconnect. RPI will be much higher.

Sounds like they play great when there's no school to worry about.  Now that school's started...oof.

Wait, they still make them take classes? I thought Division I college sports had entered the post-academic era.
Maybe you're thinking of all the social activities???

RE: Men’s soccer - Spiny_Norman - 11-03-2024

In one month, Stanford men's soccer has gone from 2nd in the country to 7th in the ACC. They play at home on Wednesday in the ACC tournament vs. 10th seed Notre Dame.
