Remember the last time we played VaTech? - gailtate - 10-03-2024

For anyone who needs reminding, we played good great football in that era. Great QB, great coach and an AD who was a Football Guy. Glad I was there. We may never see the likes of it again so let's be glad for what we had -- 'cuz them days are long gone.

I was at the Orange Bowl. And while some hated I loved the three Rose Bowls

which is probably why the 2009 Sun Bowl and 2010 Orange Bowl teams are being honored on Saturday...

I bever had as much problem with Shaw's play calling as some Cardboarders did, but I'll have to say it was pretty frustrating at the end of the second Rose Bowl.

RE: Remember the last time we played VaTech? - fullmetal - 10-03-2024

I don't live with any subjunctives about those glorious years.  I know the players themselves beat themselves up about it, and it's not my place to add to that.  Those were the years...and with a bit of elbow grease, it looks like the Troy Taylor era may be on track to reach those heights again.

I have my photos and swag from all the big bowls (and some small bowls).  I'm sad I can't make it to the game this weekend for the ceremonies, but I'm very happy to see those teams be celebrated.

RE: Remember the last time we played VaTech? - tcufrog - 10-03-2024

I was also at the Orange Bowl to watch Stanford crush VT.  2 days before I was at the Rose Bowl watching TCU beat Wisconsin.  Best college bowl weekend of my life so far.  I also attended the 3 Stanford Rose Bowl games.  Stanford thrashing Iowa was my favorite.

3 Rose Bowls?

Plunkett - OSU
Bunce - Mich
"Ron Dayne" - Wisc
McCaff's opening TD vs Iowa

Or am I having a senior moment?

Wait: didn't we beat Wisconsin in the Hogan years?

We did beat Wisconsin, when Barry Alvarez came out of retirement to coach them

And don't forget Michigan State. Much as we might like to

For a while there, the Rose Bowl was our home away from home. Those were the days.

Yes, Hogan started 3 Rose Bowls.

RE: Remember the last time we played VaTech? - Embo - 10-03-2024

I'll be there on Saturday, wearing my 2011 Orange Bowl T-shirt.  Yes, I was there.  I feel sorry for those who could not attend.  For the benefit of you who watched only the game on TV, here's what you missed:

There was a event the night before on South Beach hosted by Adam Carolla, which included the Battle of the Bands.  The VaTech band was in uniform and played their fight song and the Hokey Pokey.  They had no idea what they were up against.  LSJUMB then played outside amongst  the restaurants.  Best moment for all the locals IMHO was White Punks on Dope.

I, along with other Stanford fans, got to the then named Sun Life Stadium early to partake in the tailgate party on the mezzanine.  We had plenty of time to roam around pregame and on the third deck, I saw a man wearing a white Stanford football jersey with a single sewn-on red stripe on the sleeve and the name "Shockley".  I knew immediately what it was.  I tapped him on the shoulder to confirm that it was from the 1972 Rose Bowl. I started to tell him the story of how I was a 13 year old at the time, and I knew nothing about Stanford, but after watching the 1971 Rose Bowl, I recalled how the player intros of the Buckeyes had majors like "general studies" or "PE" while Jim Plunkett was economics and Jackie Brown was poli sci.  Hillary Shockley then interrupted me and called over Jackie Brown who was next to him.  I told them they were both responsible for me coming to Stanford.  I'm not sure who enjoyed that conversation more.

Post-game, we gathered in the southwest corner of the stadium to watch Luck, Marecic, Sherman, and Fleener being interviewed by Jon Gruden on that temporary platform.  We then headed back to South Beach to the Fountainbleu, the team hotel.  What a rush that was.  But a real high point was when we left around 1:30 AM and there was Richard Sherman's mom walking towards us.  We told her how happy we were that Richard chose Stanford and how he made a difference.  She remarked she was proud about how much he grew.  One of the best damn days of my Stanford fandom.

I just remember that mojitos were $18 everywhere in South Beach.  And that was 13 years ago!

Just an awesome time in south beach and of course the game. After we went to Key West. Many drinks to Stanford football and Hemingway

RE: Remember the last time we played VaTech? - GoodGrief - 10-03-2024

ooh, my fondest memory of the Orange Bowl (other than the game of course, which featured a super gratuituous mult-shifting offensive formation play that didn't gain many yards but was a lot of fun to watch) was Garvin inviting us to a Cardboard get-together at something like the 13th St Diner WHERE THEY HAD A MILKSHAKE WHICH HAD A SLICE OF APPLE PIE BLENDED INTO IT AND IT WAS LIKE I HAD TASTED HEAVEN IN A STEEL CUP.

Embo, I've been reading you posts since early in the Bootleg era. Feel like I know you, but this isn't my point. It's the memories of South Beach during pre-game days and nights of that Orange Bowl. Hearing pater-noster Jack Harbaugh lead cheers and the old "Who's got it better than us? NOBODY!" chant; John Hennessy praising the team, the program and the energy of a big-time football program. Everybody psyched and sky-high. I thought that maybe, just maybe, Stanford was at last cementing itself into perennial relevance in something beyond the country-club sports. Alas...it didn't happen. But for one shining moment, it sure as hell felt like it. And the endless Mojitos, margaritas  and Mai Tais and...We were on top of the Fox/ESPN world. At least we felt like it.  Stanford, of all schools. Never got any better than THAT moment.

Given how much Clemson got away with, we should try that formation for sure.

I REMEMBER THIS NOW

cctop - cctop - 10-04-2024

The Orange Bowl is the highlight of my Stanford fandom. It was like a man dying of thirst in the desert crawling into an oasis.

Anyone have the clip of the VaTech player throwing his mouthguard?

As we were leaving the game, some disappointed but very nice VaTech tailgaters waved us over for fried chicken.

Somehow we got into the players & family celebration at the Fontainebleau.  We stayed until about 2am chatting with seemingly every past and present Stanford player.

RE: Remember the last time we played VaTech? - fullmetal - 10-04-2024

I also remember being in someone's Fontainebleu room with a bunch of friends, ordering pizza and rewatching the 2AM or 4AM? ESPN replay of the game that same night.  We were delirious and giddy.

I was at the Orange Bowl -- great game!  After the game, I remember Harbaugh accepting the trophy and saying his goal was to turn Stanford Football into Champions and that they accomplished that goal by becoming Orange Bowl Champions.  We all looked at each other and knew he was basically announcing his departure.  :(
