WBB Scrimmage - Lorcan - 10-31-2024
Does anyone have any insights they're willing to share about the scrimmage last night? I'm assuming, given the score, that we're not thrilled about how last night went but I'm open to hearing what others thought.
Nunu is clearly a bright spot - and I do wonder how this team looks with Lepolo back running the point.

Just read the writeup and looked at the box score.
I would have liked to see us be more dominant also. Hopefully when Lepolo comes back it will make a significant difference.
My expectations for this year's team are definitely modest.

I am hoping that someone who attended can offer some insight. From my look at the boxscore, this is what I can glean:
1) Agara may become our most important offensive star this season. I got the feeling last year that she could have scored a lot more if she had not been behind so much other talent. Now she isn't. Hopefully 25 points and 13 rebounds becomes a regular event. Also impressed that she led the team with 5 assists! However, she may have more difficulty when playing against DIV I teams with players who are equally athletic but taller than her.
2) I was very interested in who Kate played as starters, and for how many minutes. Harriel and Tess Heal started, but Harriel got the most minutes of any player. Her stock has certainly risen. And her three point shooting continues to be good.
3) A bit concerning that it wasn't a blowout from start to finish. Apparently it even got close in the 2nd quarter. But how much of that was due to playing new players, experimenting with rotations, etc, and how much of that was an actual talent issue remains to be seen. It is called an exhibition for a reason.
4) Nice to see the offense spread around a lot. That fits Kate's preseason narrative that this will be a team with no superstar--although Agara may contest that plan. But I've always thought having that superstar player is a mixed blessing--unless you have several superstars! It is harder to defend a team which has 5 scorers on the floor and no real tendencies for any one to dominate every night.
5) Looking at who did not play much: My love fest with Stavi Papadaki from the earlier scrimmage apparently was not repeated during the exhibition. Despite that wonderful performance, she played only a couple of minutes. Also of note: Umeh and Peterson barely played. Peterson coming off of an injury is explicable, but Umeh is not as easy to explain.
6) I would like to hear more about Mary Ashley Stevenson. I half expected her to start, but she did not, and played only 18 minutes. She did not make a basket but sank 4 free throws.
7) Ever since Ki graduated we have begun every season with a "point guard" question, and this season is no different. Lepolo is still coming back from injury, but we don't know if her offense will improve when she does come back. Tess Heal could be a starting point guard--but I was a bit surprised that she was not more dominant in the boxscore, and wish I could have been there to see the performance with my own eyes. Harriel might be the surprise, and might be our most effective guard. But did she play point or shooting guard, or both? Someone who was there, please tell us ;)

Would be great to hear from people at the game how Agara got so many free throws. Was she fouled posting up / rebounding (probably harder to do against bigger defenders) or was she driving and getting fouled like say a big guard like Juju Watkins (that could be a more sustainable source of offense through the year).

I was there and I earlier promised to post some comments -- can't be nearly as good as 81s contributions, but here's my impression.
As an overall impression, the team looked ragged a lot of the time, not much smoothness or in sync there. Especially in the 1st half, the game was a lot closer than it should have been, and throughout the game, the perimeter defense was not good. Cal State LA got a lot of open looks, especially at 3, and they were making them. Rebounding was also sometimes weak, especially in 1st half. Missed a lot of D boards we should have gotten, particularly in the 1st half. Wasn't until the 2nd half that our rebounding outpaced Cal State.
14 assists on 30 made baskets tells a story -- a lot of the time, and this goes with the ragged sense of the game, individual players were just going in by themselves, not a lot of passing around or setting up plays. There were a few good passes to set something up, but they stood out because they were relatively rare in this game, at least to my eyes. In short, especially on the offensive end, this team is a work in progress, with a ways to go. Possibly contributing to this, Kate was constantly subbing among the 8 players who got almost all the minutes -- rotating people in and out a lot.
Re the starting line-up, missing Telana of course, and she was missed, didn't have her steadiness. Harriel did mostly play shooting guard, though she did take ball handling at times. Heal looks quick and also seemed a bit confused at times,, not yet fully connected to her teammates -- but she does handle the ball with confidence. She does drive well, but didn't do a lot of it. Bosgana was similar to last year, good start, but then doesn't play as well at times as the game goes on. Demetre also seems very similar to last year, blew hot and cold, sometimes really good, sometimes, what is she doing? And she did blow an inbound play with a 5 second violation.
And then there was Nunu. She looked terrific last night, the most steady and solid player on the floor. Looked confident, sure of herself, aggressive, but not fouling in doing so. To me, she looked better as a soph than Kiki did at that point. All those free throws (missed her 1st one -- and "and one" -- but then was very smooth with all the rest). She was getting fouled a lot on offensive rebounds, also on post-up shots. Worth noting re her, she not only had lots of points in the post, she also had a really nice 3 pointer. Re the assists, one was a beautiful pass out from the post to Ogden who made a 3 pointer. It was a case where Nunu found herself clogged up and knew what to do -- pass out to the open player. Note also that Nunu had a couple of blocks, might have been another or two as well that didn't make the stat sheet.
Other than Nunu, the scoring was spread around well -- total of 6 players with double digit points. Clardy in particular looked good, seems to have grown from last year. She played with confidence. Also was impressed with Ogden, seemed more sure of herself.
Stevenson was a bit of a disappointment to me. She seemed unsure of what she was doing, just didn't mesh into things, got off a couple of airball shots and nothing near the basket.

I was impressed by Cal State LA. They had excellent shooters, both from outside and inside even when rather well guarded. They were well organized and made very few of the kind of flubs we usually see from an overmatched opponent in an exhibition.
Nunu got fouled both on o-board putback attempts and on drives, iirc. She did well at being physical but avoiding offensive fouls.
Umeh and Papadaki came in together with about 1:30 left in the game. That didn't seem like a good signal for either one. Umeh is big but maybe a bit raw.
Not much else I can add to what others have said.

Nice summary WBB - I agree with all of your observations.
Some impressions of mine....
I was also a bit underwhelmed, by the transfers - Heal & Stevenson. But it's early and I sensed that both will become solid contributors as they get increasingly familiar with teammates and get settled in.
I hope Lepolo & Ijiwoye both get healthy soon. The offense was productive by taking advantage of a significant advantage in size. But it was lacking a consistent flow.
The defense was a disappointment - Cal St. shot well, but got way too many open looks.
There are no stand-outs on this team like we've gotten used to, but I think that the depth of potentially really good players is impressive. Kate talked in the press conference (link below) about playing "tag team" and using the depth. I think that their ability to do that effectively will be crucial to their success.
In connection with that, there are a lot of solid 3-point shooters. I think that they will be reliant on that both for the scoring off 3s and for opening up the middle without any truly dominant post players.

I was disappointed to see so few players in the rotation. Nothing ever seemed to gel, and couldn't (or wouldn't) guard the 3-point line.
But Nunu was fun to watch.
CSLA played Arizona Tuesday night, so I expected some fatigue from them and that we'd clobber 'em. Um...no.
The steals were fun. I also appreciated how hard everyone tried for the 50/50 balls, especially since this was an exhibition game.

Great to hear Agara off to a great start.
I'm really hoping for Heal and Harriel to step in and step up as team leading guards.
Maybe Clardy too.
I think they will be the best starting guards options.
But I could be wrong, as is so early to know.
BTW Bosgana listed as guard but am guessing she still plays more like an active forward than guard.

Another note re last night -- Tara was there, sitting in the VIP section with Amy Tucker, Susan King Borchardt. Hannah Jump and Fran Belibi were also there for a time. At the end of the game, I saw Tara walking out using a cane. Wonder what that's about. Anyone know?

Tara had hip surgery. Love to see how connected former players still feel to the program. Hannah and Fran are wonderful. Cam too has been around and was on campus when we had recruits on official visits. It’s great to see that.

Great job. I was at the game also and there’s no way I could have summarized what you just did. Except that I did see Brooke being more of a leader out there. She was talking to the team a lot. As quiet as she always has been, I was pleased to see that. I too would have liked the freshmen and Stavi to have played more minutes than they did, but Cal State LA was a scrappy and pretty decent team.
Attendance was very, very low. It was a mid week game and an exhibition, but still it was probably the smallest crowd I’ve seen :(

Thanks for the explanation. Glad it wasn't something else that was dire. As for the former players being around, I love that, and it has to be good for recruiting for prospects to see former players returning, staying connected.
Re Hannah, I have no idea if she's interested, but I'd love to see the Golden State Valkyries give her a chance. If she wants to play in the WNBA, presumably she'd be available since she's not on a team and thus wouldn't be one of the 6 protected players.

Only thing I would add is CSLA pressed on the inbounds for most of the game. We handled well, I don't remember a lot of turnovers, but that strategy has tended to take us out of offensive rhythm in the past.
I've been optimistic about Ogden - think she'll end up a good to great offensive player. Early last night she was missing a lot on good opportunities as she did sometimes last year but I thought she improved as the game wore on. Showing quite a bit more confidence than before.
