WBB 2024-2025 Season -
Spiny_Norman - 11-03-2024
The Kate Paye era starts tomorrow (Monday) vs. Le Moyne at 7 pm at Maples. The game will be available via streaming on the ACCNetwork.
https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/eventCalendarId/401717267
Le Moyne is located in DeWitt, NY, a suburb of Syracuse. Their nickname is the Dolphins which is a head-scratcher. I don't think of dolphins in NY. Le Moyne competes in the Northeast Conference where they finished 2nd last year.
Tomorrow is kickoff day for all of men's and women's college basketball with many top teams in action including two enticing women's games from Paris - Mississippi vs USC at 9 am pacific and (ACC opponent) Louisville vs. UCLA afterward. Those games will be on ESPN.

Oops., hit a paywall. Nothing, not even a story with a first hand report of the second coming is enough inducement to subscribe to the Chron. I will take your word for the quality of the story.

LeMoyne is coached by Nick DePillo, who is in his very first year with the Dolphins. DePillo has more than 20 years as an assistant, including 5 for the WNBA, so he has been around the block a few times. With a brand new head coach it will be difficult to know much of anything about the style of the team.
Looking over their roster, last year they were a guard-oriented team but did start one 6'1" player who is back this year. Several of their starters graduated, however, so they really are an unknown team with new talent and new coaching. They do have one 5'10" guard who shot the three prolifically (if not that accurately) last season, and since perimeter defense was an issue for us in the exhibition game, that needs to be watched.
Last year they went 14-2 in their league, 18-15 overall. It looks like a competent team with nothing to lose. It will be undersized, but in the absence of Iriafen and Brink that won't be as much of an issue as it would have been a year ago.

Will be interesting to see if Kate follows TVD's tradition of having her subordinates handle all the chalk talks, or whether she will show up herself, as she did as an assistant.
Seems funny to say it, but I watched Kate's chalk talk performances dramatically improve over the years. It is a whole different skill set that may have nothing to do with winning--knowing how to talk to fans. But would be a nice plus to hear from the head coach as I understand happens with WVB.

U$C finally pulled it out 68-66 after blowing a 15 point lead in the second half. U$C's stars? Juju and Kiki of course with Kiki revealing her last name is really supposed to be pronounced IriaFEN.

it's so weird that kiki's last name only got corrected just now. I would imagine that she had ample opportunity at stanford to correct us on how to announce it.

Does it now rhyme with Wooden?...as in "Iriafen for the Wooden"?

Found it interesting that Lindsay was able to bring along Ye Olde Pac-12 refs.

There is a very serious question raised here and I hope it is being addressed. I think a new coach can do it more easily than a legend. “What was it about our program that made some great players want to leave it?” Obviously NIL, or lack thereof was a big part of it. I suspect style of play was part of it…the vibe I get about this years team is that they plan to play looser with great flexibility as to who takes the shot. And with respect to the legend, I think there comes a time when the age difference is just too great to bridge the communications gap.
I have no insights into the players who left or the program that anyone else does not have. I’m not claiming to be right.
I would like to hear what others think, though, as I am convinced that if we don’t understand what the problem was and don’t fix it, we will not be a big time program again .
