Preview:
Stanford plays UC Davis at Maples, Wednesday at 7pm.
This is part of what has become a regular series. UC Davis apparently is content to come to Maples, where we last played them on December 20, winning 92-52. In that game Cam and Kiki dominated, but Bosgana, Demetre, and Agara all had double digit scoring. Here is the thread from last year:

UC Davis is coached by Jennifer Gross, who has been there for 14 years, along with her husband Joe Teramoto. In 2019 Jennifer and Joe came to Stanford three times to help Tara and our team learn the Princeton offense, since they having been running it to perfection for many years. It is one of those Tara coaching sorority stories--she frequently engaged professionally with other coaches in a way that seems unusual to some outsiders. In any case, since they taught us our offense, we have regularly played them. Needless to say, both teams know each other’s plays inside and out. We also sometimes bump into them in the NCAA tournament, since Davis usually gets there and is often in our region, playing at Maples in the 1st or 2nd game.
The talent and height disparity has always guaranteed us the win before now, but it is always a bit dangerous playing a team that knows our offense so very well. On the other hand, I imagine our defense is going to take Davis a bit by surprise—I doubt they will handle it as well as Gonzaga did, and we saw what it did to Gonzaga.
Last year at a chalk talk we were told that Davis sometimes uses a weird “junk defense,” although we did not see it that time. Will be interesting to see if Gross pulls a few rabbits out of the hat to try to make the game competitive. If so, that could be one of them.
Davis slaughtered its first two patsy opponents by more than 60 points each, but then just lost to San Diego State 77-83 on Friday. In that game Davis was led by 5’11” senior guard Tova Sabel, who transferred in from Penn State. Sabel had 26 points, 10 coming form the free throw line, so I expect she is a slasher. Also with 26 points was 5’10” junior guard Nya Epps. She went 11/14 with some treys mixed in, so she seems like an accurate shooter.
Their center is 6’3” Megan Norris, who was 5/7. She is from Menlo Park, so locals around Stanford might have seen her in high school.
UC Davis played their starters for over 30 minutes with the exception of Norris, and several other players got double digit minutes. They seem like they have some depth.
All in all, it is important not to look ahead to Indiana. Gonzaga may have had an off night—they certainly had a rash of injuries that depleted their team—and if Davis plays its best game then we could see something more competitive than we did on Sunday. But the fact that I am not worried about this game worries me!

Thanks, 81. Another great preview. One thing really struck me, if I read your text right. I. Their San Diego St game, 52 of their 77 points came from two guards. And then another 10 from the center. That means 15 points from everybody else.. That's a far cry from our hugely spread out scoring. I wonder what D Kate is going to come up with to deal with these two, and can she take advantage of possibility and unbalanced offense

In that game their two guards each scored 27 points, their center scored 13 points, and 4 other players scored 2-4 points each. I think Demetre can probably control Norris by herself, and we can rotate Lepolo, Clardy, Heal, Harriel and Ijiwoye on their two high scoring guards. They just played an overtime game, and we have a lot of high energy guards. Hopefully we can defend them well, even bring extra help from time to time, but at the least I bet they can be worn down.
They do have a 6'2" starting forward, but she played 39 minutes and made 2 points. Perhaps she was kept in for defense, or maybe she usually scores more. But that means we will need two "bigs" in the game, so expect to see MAS rotating in with Agara and Demetre quite a bit. It would be fun to see more of Harper Peterson, but that will probably depend on how the game is going.

Game is on ACCNX. Davis' only hope is to make threes. They aren't going to get many rebounds or points under the basket.

After 1 Q we lead 17-11. Davis is playing pretty good D and denying us good looks from 3. We only made 1-3 from beyond the arc in the 1st Q. We need more drive and kicks to get better looks.
Davis is 1-7 from 3. Not bad looks, just not sinking them.

Stanford has good ball movement, but getting the rebounds, but shooting, ugh. Threes are NOT going in, and for first time this year, too many turnovers.
Only thing more pathetic, the attendance. Truly dreadful

Davis defense is better than I expected so far. They are scrappy and willing to mix it up against bigger, stronger players.
On my computer screen this video has exceptionally good resolution.

I'm actually happy to see this type of game. I think it's good for the players to be in this situation before conference play starts. It's also good for the coaches to study which players can create for themselves when their play actions aren't working.
For me, Ogden is proving herself to be a top tier scorer because when the play breaks down she is able to create her own shot.
I hope Demetre and Agara take more shots at the pinch post. Every time Nagara pivots she is looking to pass. One good pump fake, jab step, and shot will be open most times. Like Kiki did last year.

Maybe our team overlooked Davis in anticipation of Indiana on Sunday. Certainly looks like a different team than the one that blew out Gonzaga.
Davis outscored us 26-20 in the 3rd Q. We lead by 2, 49-47.
