WBB: Stanford 81 CalPoly 45 - 81alum - 11-23-2024

Preview:

On Monday we take on Cal Poly SLO in what has become a long running series.  Last year we annihilated them 86-32 in a game in which Bosgana, Harriel, and Ogden all scored in double digits and Cam and Kiki each played less than 16 minutes.  You can view the thread here:

As I noted last year, the SLO campus is perhaps the only college campus in the nation that is actually larger than the Stanford campus. 

As far as their basketball team, though, SLO is off to a 3-2 start with the best win perhaps being at Montana and the worst loss being a 90-35 beat down at USC, a game in which Juju was inexplicably left in for 29 minutes.  Massey has them at 190 (Davis is 180),  for whatever that is worth.  They are no doubt better than Morgan State.

SLO is led by Palo Alto native 5'3" pg Annika Shah, a 42% three point shooter who is averaging 16 ppg.  Always fun to see her come back and play in front of family and friends.  They also have a 6'3" forward who starts, giving them some height, but 3 of the 5 who started against us a year ago are gone.  All in all, SLO is a good three point shooting team, so our guards will get some practice patrolling the perimeter on defense.  Beyond that, I have no color commentary beyond what I noted in last year's thread.

Deme3 hits her first 3.  We go up 9-0 to start the game.  Nice defense so far.  I sure wish Bosgana could finish more of her drives.  She gets there nicely, but often misses the layup.

End of 1st Q and we lead 15-7.  We are 1-7 from 3.  Most of those shots were uncontested.  Just not hitting them.  Ogden not looking good tonight.  Too many turnovers.  3 assists and 4 turnovers.  Cal Poly is not good.  We are not playing well, so far.

At the 5 minute timeout in the 2nd Q, both teams have scored 9 points in the Q.  This will not cut it.  Not what this team is capable of.

Well, CP matched our scoring in the 2nd Q.  We are 2-12 from 3 at the half.  We lead by 8, 33-25.  We are going to lose a lot of games this season playing like this.

Apparently, it’s exactly what this team is capable of. It’s what they scored after the TO as well…

I saw this team play beautiful basketball against Gonzaga.  They can play much better.

We scored 28 points in the 3rd Q to stretch our lead to 20, 61-41.  Stevenson came off the bench and made some key plays.  Teal is driving and getting to the line.  Looking much better than the first half, but still struggling from 3.

We are hitting on all cylinders now.  We start the 4th Q on an 18-1 run.  Lot's of great ball movement, assists, and hitting 3s.

Final score 81-45.  Our 28.6% 3pt shooting will bring our season percentage down a tick.  Coming into this game we were #2 in the nation.

Deme3 led all scorers with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. She went 3-5 from downtown.
