OT: Brawl after Michigan upsets Ohio State -

I finally watched some footage of the big fight — it was much worse than I imagined.
I think it reflects incredibly poorly on Ohio State. Who cares if some Michigan players were waving a flag.
Visiting teams have stormed our stadium after beating us, I stormed Cal after 1990 Big Game.
You don’t run onto the field after a home loss and confront the victorious visiting team.
Also, doesn’t it look like one of the Sheriffs was trying to get some hits on the Michigan players? Incredibly unprofessional, possibly illegal? Apparently police also used pepper spray on players.

It wasn’t flag waving that upset the Ohio State players, it was the attempt by the Michigan players to plant their flag on the Ohio logo. Watching the entire melee in real time left me with the impression that the Michigan players were in the wrong for initiating the fracas.

Michigan players were definitely taking delight in aggravating tOSU fans. The intent likely wasn't to aggravate tOSU players because the losing team players are supposed to go to the locker room right after the game. So they should have never been lurking around to see the display.
Michigan needed to stay on the field because many players and coaches on the winning team are expected to stay on the field for various media obligations. The BigTen gets a big chunk of money with media rights, so the winners in BigTen games tend to spend quite a bit of time on the field post-game.
tOSU should have been strolling back to the locker room for their losing team interviews. That didn't happen. The definitely should not have returned to the field no matter what Michigan players were doing. If the Michigan players were literally tearing down goal posts or tearing up the field tOSU had field security and a fleet of police officers to enforce that stuff, and the BigTen would have levied a very healthy fine to Michigan for any damages.
After the melee cleared up...tOSU players were escorted off the field by the police and game security while the Michigan players even those that were pepper sprayed, stayed on the field in the very same spot to...complete the various BigTen on field interviews that the BigTen contest winners are normally expected to complete.
Michigan were obnoxious winners, but tOSU players' desire to storm back on the field was pathetic. They were 20+ point favorites. If they really didn't want Michigan to celebrate on their field then don't lose to a 20+ point underdog.

Watching various game highlights yesterday, I noticed that there were various attempts at flag planting at the 50 from some visiting teams after their victory.
Although I don't condone it, I understand why home team players would get upset. I think the NCAA will adopt some rule prohibiting that action.

Sportsmanship is a quaint notion of a bygone era. So, this is just a natural extension of the in your face crap that permeates sports.
Michigan won a rivalry game. Big upset. Celebrate with your fans. But instead, they chose to “stick it” to the OSU fans. I’d say Bush League move. But heck, bush is now the norm.
And if you feel as many do that sports is a reflection on society. Well…..

Also in the news during rivalry weekend was the story about how nebraska team captains refused to shake hands with Iowa team captains before their game.
It does feel like there’s a “new normal,” but let’s not forget that the 49ers Terrell Owens celebrated in the Dallas Cowboys Star. Should the Cowboys team run onto the field and started a brawl?

I wonder if the NCAA will levy suspensions on players and coaches. They should IMO.

I disagree. The NCAA has no teeth. Every time they do something, it just initiates a flurry of lawsuits. The matter should be handled by the Big Ten - Fat fines for both schools with an accompanying statement that similar actions in the future will be addressed by more severe penalties.

Ohio State was previously “victimized” in this way by Baker Mayfield.

In the past, fining a player seemed wrong, unless it went to the civil or criminal courts.
Now, if the NCAA says schools must pay players, then the schools should be required to fine players. NIL sponsors may want to look at the fine print of their agreements and withhold money.
Unless someone here thinks brawling increases the value of their NIL....

I do not be believe a player has ever been fined for actions during or after a game. This could change in the future but I think enforcement would require some kind of legal agreement.
A collective bargaining agreement is the best solution to most of the issues that are on the horizon. The sooner, the better.

I’m not suggesting that Ohio State “should have” responded as they did. I am, however, not the least bit surprised that they did respond in that fashion.

I was surprised that tOSU responded. It wasn't the first thing Michigan did after the game, it was far enough after the game that I thought tOSU would have been chillin' in the locker room.
tOSU will likely have at least one more game this season. It would not shock me at all if there are a few members of tOSU that are suspended for that first playoff game now. I would have thought even if tOSU players were slow to get to the locker room, the coaching staff would have dashed out there and told the players to get away. Perhaps reminding them that unlike Michigan players that might be suspended for their first game NEXT season, they need to stay eligible for the playoffs THIS season.
I am sure the BigTen will look the other way to preserve tOSU's chances of winning that first round game. Still I remember thinking that Coach Day looked so clueless, and that he should have been commanding his staff to get the players in the locker room ASAP.
Apparently others had similar thoughts.

What do you expect for a mere 9.95 Million a year?

Wait, is Michigan really not bowl eligible? I admit to being a bit out of it, but I thought they at least had 6 wins before the tOSU game.

Michigan is 7-5, currently, T7th with Minnesota and Rutgers, just one game ahead of Washington and USC, and two games ahead of UCLA, MSU and Wisconsin (by overall record).
At 7-5, Michigan will likely end up in the Reliaquest Bowl in Tampa, the Music City Bowl in Nashville or the Mayo Bowl in Charlotte. The Big Ten bowl selection process gives priority to the bowls in that order. Since Illinois will probably end up in the Citrus Bowl, the next bowl down is the Reliaquest Bowl, f/k/a the Outback Bowl and prior to that, the Hall of Fame Bowl. Michigan has appeared in that game six times, going 3-3.
If Reliaquest passes, then the Music City Bowl could scoop up Michigan. They've never been to Nashville for a bowl, so...maybe. If those two Bowls pass up Michigan...and they probably won't...then the Pinstripe Bowl, lastly, the Mayo Bowl.
Michigan bowl projections: Where Wolverines are going after upsetting Ohio State
Incidentally, Washington & USC are still eligible for the former Pac-12 bowl ties and affiliations, including Alamo, Independence, Holiday, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Sun Bowls. Sun Bowl a strong possibility for either USC or Washington, facing either UNC, Ptt, Va Tech, Ga Tech or BC from the ACC.
Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl could feature Washington or USC

The Big Ten fined each school was fined $100,000 and did not suspend any coaches or players. The matter is now closed.
