Andrew Luck’s New Role at Stanford: Why “General Manager” is a Misnomer

Money Quote
"Luck’s role appears to grant him autonomy over the football program. Describing his role as simply a GM is a complete misnomer. Luck has not been tapped into this role as just a GM; he is about to become the Emperor of Stanford Football. With this change will come some unintended consequences. For any college coach around the country who has held full autonomy of their program, any involvement of a NIL GM is to bring some change in responsibility and independence."

Apologies if this was posted in another thread.

Hopefully it works out. As others have pointed out, the way the team has been doing for the last few years there isn't a lot of downside.

Great article. Thanks. In Luck we trust.

Luck's appointment might have come too late for next season.  But we shall see what he can do with those who remain for spring practice.

Does his dad come as consultant?

Was this Muir's idea? (Don't laugh).  Feels like someone succumbed to pressure, or is this just a hands in the air surrender to move blame from the institution to Luck if the program does not improve?

I applaud our alma m. for pioneering this move. (If not the first, at least one of the first, and seemingly taking it to a new level)
Yes, of course, it may not work. Or it may kinda work but not as much as hoped for.
But as others have pointed out, what is to lose? Go 2-10 next year instead of 3-9?
What seems appropriate to me about it is that the college football landscape is so much more complicated these days than ever.
Between the wild west transfer portal and NIL and ever changing NCAA rules and unknown congressional action and unknown court decisions yet to drop,
how could you expect either a head football coach, or an AD who's in charge of a multitude of sports,
to have the overwhelming focus and hard work that is needed just on obtaining and holding onto a competitive football roster?
Not to even get started about the work towards rebuilding the fan base.
Wishing AL well and with acknowledgement of what a challenge lies ahead.

In Luck's interviews, he has described Levin as first raising the possibility with him.

Many schools have football general managers but all of the previous ones I am aware of work for the head coach, rahter than vice versa.
