OT: Troy Taylor vs Bill Belichick, UNC hires ex-Patriots Coach -
Snorlax94 - 12-11-2024
Crazy to think we will see Troy Taylor matching up against Bill Belichick.
On the one hand, I think if Belichick didn’t have the energy to coach in the NFL, he’s definitely not going to have the energy to coach in college, dealing with a bunch of kids.
On the other hand, his star power alone could revolutionize their recruiting, and if he had the right assistant coaches, maybe he can offload the exhausting work and focus just on the parts he can handle.
Predictions? UNC went 6-6 last year but only 3-5 in conference, barely better than Stanford. My bet is a strong start, but only a small improvement overall, but we will see how this impacts their recruiting.

For this year it was January 24. We'll see if they can speed it up this year.
So far Stanford has only 5 home games on the schedule.
SJSU 9/13

(1) 1 of Bill Belichick's possible assistant coaches could be for Def Coordinator, namely his son, Stephen Belichick who this year was Def Coord at UW.
(2) I imagine that would be a very trusted delegation/offload.
(3) 1 of the reasons this is such a great move/hire for UNC (besides giving their program a large bump in terms of headlines & media-excitement) ...is Coach Belichick, literally knows every great 'position coach' or ex-player who could help his Young UNC players development.
Examples:
I imagine for 'Inside LBs' he could ask Tedy Bruschi to come in & work with his UNC Inside LBs for a few weeks
I imagine for 'DBs' he could ask the McCourty Twins or StephonGilmore or TyLaw to come in & work with his UNC DBs for a few weeks
I imagine for QBs, he could have Tom Brady or the Mannings (due to his ESPN ManningCast relationship) come in & work with his UNC QBs for a few weeks
I imagine for TEs, he could have Gronk come in & work with his UNC TEs for a few weeks
I imagine for Slot WRs, he could have Julian Edelman work with his Slot WRs for a few weeks
I imagine for 'Interior DLinemen', he could have Vince Wilfork work with his Interior DLinemen for a few weeks
etc,
(4) [So, quite possibly it won't be that exhausting for Coach Bill Belichick].
(5) [And remember, it was largely Bill Belichick's leadership that took & converted a 'failing NE Patriots Franchise' into the 'NFLs best Dynasty' ...so Coach Belichick knows how to 'turn around losing programs' ...hmmmh makes me wonder ?].

Drew Magary on SFGate doesn't think much of the Belichick hire:
Old-ass Bill Belichick is going to suck as a college coach — and I cannot WAIT

Belichick's hire will be interesting, for sure. I don't really agree with Magary's characterization of Walsh's tenure as a failure...they did go 10-3 with a bowl win in Walsh's first year. And Walsh's recruiting was good enough that the Sheriff had a few 7-win seasons out of the gate.
But we're talking about two different situations. The present-day situation at UNC and the thirty-year-old scenario at Stanford don't have much in common. The portal allows UNC an instant talent upgrade and they can buy players with the NIL investments. Belichick will have to assemble a terrific staff, but the man succeeded for a very, very long time in a league where the crappiest team would beat Alabama, USC or Georgia 50-7 every time out. And UNC has gone to six consecutive Bowl games (losing four in a row until the bowl game vs. UConn this year).
Personally, I like hiring older people. They tend to work harder and smarter than the kids I've hired. Will Belichick go 10-3 or better? Maybe. They went 6-6 and three of their losses were by a TD or less.
